View Full Version : I think I broke my DVD drive
One of the drives I was taking apart for use with the laser flashlight. I wanted to mod what was left of it. But now, I can't get the damn thing to work. I didn't remove anything from it besides the laser. It just stopped working all of a sudden. All I need from it is for it to open up. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong, or what could be done? Or is it all just ****ed to **** now? Should I post pictures?

Pictures work well. And I'd just say pull out the motors and get what you can.... it's good for scrap ^-^;;
Here's what I have left of the drive. I still do have the other parts to it, but they're all removed. In this pictutre, a the bottom left is the button to open to tray, on the right is the motor, and at the top right is where the molex plugs in.

I don't fully know where this spring goes, but things seem to work better without it

Here's the drive flipped over, so it's right side up

That white thing is what pops open the tray, and moves a piece under the tray up and down

Power connector

Motor
http://codeinsurrection.com/pics/computer/mod/dvd/DSC_2373.JPG
So it appears that the power goes from the molex, to this
http://codeinsurrection.com/pics/computer/mod/dvd/DSC_2375.JPG
And travels over to the other board to where the power button is
http://codeinsurrection.com/pics/computer/mod/dvd/DSC_2376.JPG
And then the button sends the signal back across, to the motor
http://codeinsurrection.com/pics/computer/mod/dvd/DSC_2377.JPG
Which turns this gear to move the tray out
http://codeinsurrection.com/pics/computer/mod/dvd/DSC_2378.JPG
And moves this white piece to pop open the tray, and drops the part below the tray that holds the disc
http://codeinsurrection.com/pics/computer/mod/dvd/DSC_2379.JPG
And this is that part

So basically, all I need is for the tray to open, and for it to be powered by the molex. So if anyone can come up with a way for me to wire up a whole new thing and remove the bigger board, that'd work. I'm not sure what the problem is though. Maybe it shorted out.

in the first picture the cable isn't in proper.
At the point it was taken, sure it wasn't fully in there, but that's not the problem.
I have another dvd drive that I pulled apart in a similar fashion. This one also seems to have the same problem of not powering on. I couldn't even get them to short (I tried unpluging them and plugging them on while the computer was running, to create a spark and a short). So I'm not sure what's going on.

Only looked at 2 of your pictures, since ive taken apart 2 cd drives within the last 10 hours, most of them are close enough to make a generalization, for a tray that just ejects itself all you need is:
A tray with tracks, the large sprocket, a motor, 3 position toggle switch or rocker.
If you use the motor out of the cd drive youll need to salvage a fan's molex header thing, or you can just use batteries lol.
pretty straight forward from there, if you dont get a 3 way switch the motor will keep going making an annoying noise and ruin the motor in the long run.
I know which basic parts I need to make it work, and I left all of those in there. I know the motor still works, since I ran 3 volts across it. The problem is thatthe small board (the one with the LED and the open button) doesn't seem to be getting a power signal. I ran 3 volts across the LED too, and that works. Yet for some reason, the signal from the open button isn't getting to the motor.
I've made no progress in this, but I'm wanting to make a mod with it again. So, any ideas on why it might not be working?

It might need the laser for it to work... like, electricity goes through the laser and to some of the other parts... or something like that.
That's one thought I had. Maybe if power isn't being supplied everywhere, the circuit isn't complete, or it won't allow itself to power on. Too bad I destroyed the lasers though.

Look on eBay (even though it's swamped with assholes) and see if you can't get any there... or if they're good drives, get a cheap one from Newegg.

is there like any way you can just splice in a wire for where the laser was?? if not...you can find a cheap drive on ebay or amazon. are you gonna need a new drive...more likely not right? or if you have a brother, you can always take his while he's not looking. haha
