View Full Version : What to do with a PS2?

So I recently acquired a PS2 Slim, but I'm not sure what to do with it. I don't have any games for it and I don't really plan on buying any either. I have an XBox for gaming (although I might get some FF games ;)).
I was thinking about modding it, but it doesn't have the top cover, so there really isn't anything to mod. I could create a top cover, but honestly, I really don't want to do that. lol
So what can I do with a PS2 if I don't plan on gaming with it or modding it? Any ideas, suggestions, comments, etc etc are welcome. ...obviously.
Anything to do with illegal mod chips isn't welcome by the way. For two reasons; Firstly, I don't want to spend money on them and secondly, they are not allowed to be discussed on this forum. Since you know, they're illegal. Otherwise, I really am open to suggestions! lol I haven't a clue what to do with it. It would be a shame to see it just collect dust for the remainder of its life. EDIT: Also, I just thought about how some of you guys think, which includes me. So strapping a stick of TNT to it isn't an option either. Nor is any other means of dangerous explosives or harmful chemicals, etc etc.
**Sweet, I got the top cover piece now AND Katamari Damacy! Woot! lol**
What about a linux rig? Is that possible to do? That'd be awesome!

Yes, it is possible to run linux on a PS2.
(Not done it myself, but seen it on th'internet.)

Or you could use it for cooling experiments. Muhaha.

From the site, it says that this kit does not work for the slim edition. But, I can always mod it I suppose. Maybe. Depends on why it wont work with the slim edition.
Is there any other way? I'm always up for homemade if thats an option, its usually cheaper to do things yourself anyhow. Especially seeing how all I need is the hard drive if there is a way to do it homemade.
Also, where can you get that kit? I checked the US site but couldn't find it.

So I think I know what I'm going to do with this thing. Although I'm still open to the Linux idea if it doesn't cause me too much trouble. Like special ordering parts or spending more than $50usd. Thats a bit of a deal breaker, I rather just let it collect dust if that should be the case. lol
Base color = Blood Red.
Accent color = Pitch Black.
Then slap a Guitar Hero II sticker on the top or paint on some kind of Guitar Hero II design.
Now, the fun part comes here hopefully. Forget those plastic guitars that come with Guitar Hero games, why not use a real guitar? I have two at my disposal, one I keep in a maximum security vault, the other... erm... I bought at walmart. lol. Still a nice guitar though.
Does anyone know how to do that or can lead me in the right direction? It looks like this guy did (http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2006/12/how_to_build_yo_7.html), but I can't seem to find a step by step guide or anything. Maybe I'm just blind. ?

Sorry guys, but the US version of the kit has been out of production for well over 2 years, and as of post time eBay has 1 kit, but either way it physically doesn't work with the slim version. You'd need to do serious hacking away at the thing to get it to even fit.

ah well thats a bummer. on both accounts, not being in production and not being for the slim.

It's a bummer for me too. If it weren't out of production and it fit with the slim version, I could have a $130 Linux PC brand new :(. Oh well I guess.
But hey, if you really, REALLY want PS2 Linux, the kit on eBay is $66. I guess you could get the HDD to fit and all, but it'd be a lot of work.

well if your going to game with it you can go buy some copper sheets (0.5mm-1mm not sure yet) and replace the crap thermal pad on the two chips and then go get FF XII and play that. i am currently playing it i got the collectors edtion when it first came out via preorder. it doesn't heat up enough to slow it down or anything but i would like it cooler.

I just read your post about making a real Guitar Hero guitar. It shouldn't be too hard. What you'd have to do (BTW this is a guess lol) is open up the guitar from the back, taking out all the screws and the plate that allows you to put new pickups in, take out the pickups, remove the neck, hollow out the neck so you can run the wires to the buttons through, cut holes in whatever frets you want the buttons to be, run the wires through the neck, cut a hole in the body and replace it with the Guitar Hero strummer button thing, and do the same for the whammy bar.
Phew, my hands are tired from all that run-on sentencing.
Edit: Forgot to mention: You would also have to give it a wicked paint job

Only thing is a PS2 = 300 MHz, 32 MB . .Snails crawl faster.
Not worth the money for the kit IMO.

True, copper is so much "cooler" looking than aluminum. But its also fairly pricey at the moment. I don't know if thats just around here or if its everywhere, but the price for copper has been raised last time I checked. But in any case, the aluminum works just fine. I'll probably put some AS5 in there though, that helped lower the temps of my laptop a little bit. ...well, that and cleaning out all the dust too lol

Lets see... I have $50usd and guitar hero guitars cost around that much... hmmm. :p
I thought I saw a guide yesterday on how to make one out of a keyboard or something. That would be cool! Totally home brewed. ^_^

A. Thats why I named the title so. B. Already have one, as I said in my first post.

I agree. I wouldn't pay more than what I could get for a IDE HDD. Since I'm sure, somehow, its possible to run linux on a PS2. But no biggie I guess, the guitar hero mod sounds pretty cool to me. ^_^

This is true, I had a PSP and I browsed the internet with it too. It wasn't slow at all really either. But, I sort of kind of broke that... lol

No thanks, I don't do any kind of online transaction unless I know the person and trust them and/or its over ebay or something like that. Not that I don't trust you or anything, just personal preference.
If I do figure out how to hook up a HDD to it and run linux, eh, I like a challenge. I'm sure I can fabricate something cool looking to fit extra parts. -_^
Does anyone else have anything else to add about how to create a guitar hero guitar? Any advice, opinions, comments ...well you know the rest. lol

no i don't mean swapt the heatsink out for a all copper one i mean in order to change to artic silver 5, i was going to do that, you would need to get two small sheets of copper and put AS5 on the top and bottem then put the old heatsink back on top. if you don't add the copper there is a gap that would require maybe a tube of AS5 to fill the gap.
here (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9585) is the thread i started on it with a picture of the mobo for the slim ps2.
i've seen people take 2 guitar hero guitars and put the two sets of buttons into one guitar so you can move your hand up and down the neck. LMAO, i just found this,

i'm not sure if this was a mod or they sell it but this would be neat.

i'm not sure you can hook up a IDE, or sata hdd to a slim ps2. but now that i think of it there is usb slots on it so maybe.
