Hello once again boys and girls. I'm starting up a new project today :D. Before I get to the pics, here's a little info about the project.

For starters, the case I'm using is the Thermaltake Shark (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133143). I loved the look of the front, the great features, and the fact that it's a full tower and I plan on watercooling this. If you didn't already get it, the name of the project comes from the case :p. Anyways, for this case I'm not theming it at all. I just want a semi-normal looking computer, with a sleek design and minimal color variation. That brings me to the next part. For the colors, I'm sticking with the stock case: black case, blue lighting (some may say it's overdone and cliche, but I think it's easier on the eyes than all the devil red and black or multicolor rave cases). There may be a little silver thrown in, but it won't be the focus of the colors. For the design, like I said, I want sleek, and simple-yet-complex. I like the curves on the case, and I'm designing most of the windows/aesthetic mods on curves. There will be blue plexi, black metal, and blue water. For lighting, I'm keeping that to a minimal/average amount, partly because I don't want to waste electricity and partly because I don't want to rival the sun. No CCFLs for this, LEDs is what I'll be using. I'm still working on some 3D designs of the case, and I'll post those once I can make them :p. But for now, on with the pictures.

Here's the case. I like the look of the front door, but it's a little plain for me. Plus, like I said this will be black and blue, so that silver thing on the side has got to go. As you'll see down more, it doesn't really fit with what I'm using anyways.

Started to work on the front panel. Took it all apart.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0002.jpg

Here's that silver thing. Needs to go.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0003.jpg

It will be replaced by this stuff. Yes, it is gutter guard, but it's nice and strong.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0004.jpg

Here's the other portion of the front panel.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0005.jpg

It will be covered something like this.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0006.jpg

The back.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0007.jpg

The plates slide on and off. Pretty handy
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0008.jpg

Replacing the silver thing is this. After not even .3 seconds with a Dremel, the cutting disk broke so I cut all of what you'll see with snips.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0009.jpg

Mock up.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0010.jpg

Painted black. I like it better like this.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0011.jpg

Dried. New mock up.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0012.jpg

Areas marked for cutting for the big portion of the front panel.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0013.jpg

After a long tedious time with the snips, I get this.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0014.jpg

Kept them connected at the bottom. Easier to get on and off.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0015.jpg

Another mock up. The big part will be black, but before I paint it needs to flatten out.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0016.jpg

Woah, that was fast.

Thanks man  And yeah, this gutter guard is pretty good. I had some other stuff that was real flimsy and didn't hold shape at all, and this new stuff I bought works great.

on another note, once I post pics of mine we should soooo do like a fight to the death between The Dark Side and Project: Shark... they are like total opposites  (think battle bots + red vs blue)

also I know you said you was gonna keep the lighting to a minimum but I saw sumn that fits the case perfectly (you have probably already seen them but I'm showing you anyway....) these :D (http://www.xoxide.com/ledcasefeet.html)

Yeah dude, this gutter guard stuff is nice . It was really cheap too, like $1.80 for a 6" x 3' sheet.

just incase anyone is going out looking for big sheets of this stuff over this side of the pond its usually called expanded metal and its used for re-enforcing plaster on walls.

so just dont be surprised if you get starange looks askin for gutter gaurd (ive never heard it called that before this forum)

The stuff I'm using isn't for plastering walls, it's used for keeping leaves and gunk out of your gutters around your house, but good advice though .

well its exactly the same as the stuff for plaster, its used when you need to fill in a bit of a dip in a wall and need to build up a thick layer of plaster without it falling off the wall. comes in 6x3 sheets like you said mal

That's sweet. I wonder if it's the same price as this stuff? Because that was one of the selling points for me. For the look and strength, the price was definitely right, but I could use some wider stuff, because this is only 6" wide.

here is some other type of gutter helmut my dad is using on his house.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h205/rendermandan/Water%20Cooled%20Turbine/100_2379.jpg

Just like modders mesh only larger holes and plastic. there was a fine mesh screen just like a window screen glued to the back side that I pulled off.

I almost bought that stuff, but the fact that it was plastic turned me off. I wanted metal, so this was the only thing that looked decent that I could use.

Is pearlized blue the same as pearlescent blue? I LOVE Pearlescent... ANYTHING. haha. It just looks so bad ass, especially in the light. If your using pearlescent, be sure to go to lan parties with plenty of sun! :p

If by pearlescent you mean it has an odd shimmer to it, then yes, this is that stuff .

Also, I may have lied a little in that last post. It will be seeing some use pretty soon. And here is why. Today I was home alone, with absolutely nothing to do. So I grabbed my paycheck, biked to the bank, biked to a state park close by (not really), took some nature photos, and went to Best Buy. I figured since I got some nice new speakers for this, maybe I should look into a nice new mouse and keyboard setup. So, I found a nice little gem. The Logitech EasyCall Desktop. It's made for wireless internet VoIP but has a very nice keyboard and mouse combo, which is why I got it. I believe it is +$100 on Newegg, and Best Buy had it for $59.99(!) so I had to buy it. It's got a great keyboard with nice media functions, programmable F keys, and VoIP keys (which won't see much use from me..). It also has the wireless MX-600 mouse. Maybe I'll review it sometime. But, I took some pics too.

I have that desktop! ...actually, I'm using it right now. lol

Its pretty sweet, the speaker isn't great, but its good enough for calls. The keyboard is one of my favorite keyboards, and the mouse is pretty well built and isn't glitchy at all. As for the headset, burn it, break it, throw it away. Your ears will LOVE you for sparing them the pain of wearing that damned thing. It's not quite big enough on my head either, don't know about yours. lol ...also, the mic isn't great on mine. You have to have it practically IN your mouth for it to work.

Otherwise, it really is a nice little gem of equipment. My younger brother has the same desktop as well and he too says its the best he's had so far in life. ^_^

**
PSH!! I paid $119.99 at Best Buy for mine! Lucky...

.Maleficus.
08-24-2007, 05:49 PM
I'm not too worried about the headset/mic/speaker thing, since I'm not using any of them. This was the cheapest thing Best Buy had that was worth my money.

And since it's Logitech, I'm sure it'll last a long time. Now to start painting... (soon anyways, I don't know if I'll have time still tonight...)

Thanks for the replies guys!

It's nice living in this little town where there aren't many people and everyone is pretty friendly. I went to Walmart to get the rubbing compound, go to the checkout, and heard the feared "BEEP", meaning you need to be 18 to buy it. The lady looked at me and said, "You aren't 18, are you". Well, I'm 15, and look my age, so no, I'm not. She pulled it out of the bag, and said "Rubbing compound? Is this like for you car or something?" I replied, "Yes, well, actually, it's for my computer" and she said "Well, if you aren't going to sniff it or anything, you can be 18 *laughs*". So, she let me buy it, and I'm a happy camper.

Also, I'm redoing the mouse . It looked ok, but not to my standards. I only have the black coat done, but trust me, it already looks 50x better than it did before. And since I have more of an idea of what I'm doing, it will be much nicer.

Thanks for all the comments guys! I originally didn't want to repaint the mouse (because what I didn't tell you was the final repaint was like repaint #7) but I knew I could get it better.

Anyways, today after work I'm going to call up my grandma (or have my mom do it when I'm at work) and see if my grandpa has a scroll saw. He probably does since he has tons of stuff like this, and I hope he does. I don't have my own, nor do I have enough money right now to buy the saw, the watercooling parts, and a season pass to our ski hill.

But, I do get paid sometime soon (in a few days I think) so I'll be ordering some of the watercooling parts (probably the rad(s), so I can work on mounting stuff in the case). If I have enough, I'll order the pump too, but I don't think I will, so it'll probably just be rads. But that's enough to tide me over until the next check.

GREAT JOB on the KB & Mouse. Could you tell us how you achieved the mesh look in your paint job and how you used the 3m rubbing compound? I see the before and after of your mouse and if that's all 3m compound, I have some great uses for it on my mod.

Thanks man .

For the mesh look, I first did a black base coat on the entire mouse. Then I cleared that, and hit it with the rubbing compound. Then I took some of the mesh I'm using in the mod (well, different mesh, same look) and formed it around the mouse. THIS IS VERY TRICKY. If the last coat of paint (whether it be color or clear) hasn't cured enough, you'll leave deep gouges in the paint, forcing you to sand and start over. After you make a little shell for the mouse out of the mesh, tape it on so it doesn't move, and airbrush the part you want blue (in my case). The mesh acts like a very small mask, so anything that had the metal of the mesh over it will stay black. Let the paint dry, take of the mesh, and you're done. There are other things, like the fade, that you need to do with the mesh on, but fading is just a matter of letting of up the paint as you're airbrushing. If you can tell in the second mouse, I also having it fading from the bottom from all blue into the mesh. You do that after you take the mask off.

Using the 3M stuff is really easy. Get a lint-free cloth or an old tshirt, put some compound on the cloth, and rub it in little circles until it's dry, turning the cloth when needed. Depending on the size of the object you're rubbing, you'll need more or less compound. They recommend the size of a quarter for every square foot. I used about the size of an eraser head on each half of the mouse.

Hope that helped you man, and I'd just like to say thanks for all the great comments so far!

Panel design time.

Here's a quick look at it. Not very interesting if you ask me.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0062.jpg

Have to take off that plastic thing on the front.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0063.jpg

Screws and other parts from it.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0064.jpg

Close up. I need some opinions on this. Do I keep it black or paint it like the mouse? The mesh has turned into a pretty big part of the mod, so what do you think? Black or mouse-style?

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0066.jpg

Naked !

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0067.jpg

Masked with the first part of the window design drawn in.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0068.jpg

Better look at the design. Here's how it works: The pink is blue plexi (imagine this is the front of the panel). The 2 black circles are socket head cap screws. The black shaded is the cut of the panel. The plexi will hang over the edges of the cut a little to accommodate the screws, and the plexi will also be lifted ~1/8" off the panel for cool-factor. I'm thinking I may put mesh behind the panel too, but that's up in the air right now.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0069-2.jpg

Also, there will be windows like the above on all of the masked area (or most at least). I'll post the finished design, well, when I finish.

Comments and suggestions please :).

I think paint it like the mouse, paint it blue and and bleed it to black at the rear of the case, that would look great, especially with the mesh.

I say paint the plastic bit like the mouse, front-to-back gradient, mesh and all.

I'm seriously loving this mod, too. Just reading it makes me want to mod my mouse and keyboard (as I've been wanting to for a while honestly).

So far that's 3 votes for painting it like the mouse (my dad thinks I should too). So, since I need to break up the tedium of drawing the designs, maybe I'll go do that in a bit. But I just bought Dawn of War Gold Edition so maybe not.

Ugh...

Masked the silver of the handle.

And the reason for the ugh...

Of course, clear coat doesn't like plastic.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0076-1.jpg

I guess I'll have to repaint the black, well, black. Awesome. That's a job for after school tomorrow (first day...).

Also, since school's starting, (if it matters to anyone) updates will be coming a lot slower. I have after school off of work most days, but I do work weekends still, and I'm working less, and working less means less money. Meaning less parts. Meaning less updates.

You may want to get yourself a can of plastic primer, would help with your problem and you would get a much better result overall.

Yeah, I have a can here, but it's hella clogged and not worth trying to reuse. I need to pick up another can, and probably another can (or cans) of black. Hopefully I'll have time for that after school tonight, but if not, maybe I'll start on the designs for the rad placement, pump placement, etc.

Thanks man.

Alright, so I'm just about to order some 1/8" 12"x24" Blue Transparent plexi from the eStreetPlastic eBay store. I'll be buying 3 sheets, because I'll probably need a lot of it . That'll leave me with ~$50 left, so I'll be looking into the rad(s), pump, and other various parts I'll need. I'll buy some more primer and black paint, and hopefully have that cover thing painted by the end of the week, but other than that, there probably won't be another update until the plexi arrives.

.Maleficus.
09-08-2007, 08:20 PM
Another text update :(.

I just checked out my email from eStreetPlastics and my plexi should be here Wednesday. Since it'll be here soon, I'm starting work on the panel cutting. I should have a pic update of that in a few days (I hope). I also just ordered one of these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835202003). Since I'm watercooling, I figured I should give my RAM some lovin' since it isn't going in the loop.

Updates!

Woah... How'd that get there? Simple answer: jigsaw. I wish I had some action shots, but alas, I have but 2 hands, and a dead camera battery (at the time). I'll be working on the others tomorrow.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0080-1.jpg

Ou ou! What's this!? It's the plexi that arrived from eStreetPlastics today! Hooray! 3 sheets of 1/8" blue, 12"x24". It's nice !

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0082-1.jpg

I really have no excuse for the lack of progress shots on this one, other than I was too busy having fun cutting, sanding, and polishing. 1 down, 5 to go.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0083-1.jpg

This is about what it will look like, but lifted slightly from the panel, and held by a socket head screw. I'm going to see what it looks like with mesh behind it too.

Man, thanks a lot guys!

I did a little work earlier today, but I'm too tired to take pics and upload them after... It isn't much anyways, just some more cutting on the panel. Good news though, I have Wednesday and Thursday to work on it (after school of course), and I should be getting paid soon so I'll be ordering some WC parts. Bad news too, I work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (all day on Sat. and Sun.) and it's Homecoming week, so I'll be dead from that, plus dead from work. So chances are I'll only have Wed. and Thurs. to work on this, so I'll try to do a lot and update soon.

Cheers guys (I may not be an Aussie but I love saying that).

And dont worry about the plexi not doing what you want it to. Im feeling it too. Working with this damn 1/8 inch brittle lucite crap...oh and by doing it by hand.

Update... text... sad.

I just placed my order for... 1 Black Ice Pro 120.1 rad, 1 Black Ice Pro 120.2 rad, and a bottle of UV FluidXP+ HP coolant. $99.70. I still have ~$110 left, so tomorrow I'll order a few more bits (probably pump, tubing, maybe fans) and I'll save the blocks for my last paycheck(s). Which brings me to this...

I've decided to quit my job (for the time-being). I'm just too damn busy right now. I've got this mod, finishing up A+, learning Java, school, and guitar, and coming up real quick is the curling season (yes, I'm a curler). My last paycheck(s) should cover the rest of this mod, so it's all good there. After I turn 16 in December, I'll be applying at BestBuy/GeekSquad (partially why I'm putting focus on A+, seems like it'd be nice to have on an app.), and if I don't get hired there, I can always jump back into McDonalds. So, expect some updates in the near future.

Peace.

Edit: When I say I'm quitting my job, I mean I'll be putting in my 2 weeks notice soon. I'll be employed for a few more weeks still.

That is a good question, and one I was going to bring up in the near future (you beat me though, and since it's asked, here we go).

I've got a few options here.

1. Leave the current mesh and just go with it.
2. Remove the mesh completely.
3. Replace with other mesh.

Option 1 is easiest, and least fun. Option 2 is what I'm leaning towards, because with it gone the internals can be seen easier. Option 3 is the hardest, because the mesh I'm using is only 6" wide, and the whole lot of the panel is ~12". It might not look too good if you can see the split where it's 2 pieces.

Ideas? Oh, and there _should_ be an update coming later today or tomorrow. I need to work on this really bad.

The boy 4rm oz

Personally I like the look of the mesh. You could replace it with some tinted black plexi and put a white CCFL behind it so that when the system is on you can see through and when it's off it's dark, that would look sweet.

It's actually kinda like that right now with the blue plexi. It's a lot darker than I originally expected, so unless there's light behind it you can't see through all that well.

I have some white CCFLs, but I can't find the damn inverter... :dead:

Yeah, lets hope . I've worked there for almost a year and a half now, and I think it's time for a break. I can't handle 20 hours a week, school, modding, guitar, and soon, curling all at once. Especially because me and 3 other guys are starting a League team for curling (basically besides curling for school, it'll also be against various teams every Tuesday night). And to top that all off, I have the extra stuff (notice that modding isn't in this list ;)) like A+ and learning Java.

But, enough whining for one post. This ain't a blog, right guys? ;).

Checked the UPS site, and my rads and coolant should be here Monday. If all goes well, I should be able to order my tubing, pump, and clamps in the next few days. Just got a few hoops to jump through with the parents first. But, once all that is here, I'll be able to start taking apart the case for mounting cuts, painting, and all that good stuff.

Later guys.

Edit: Man, after reading that first paragraph, I sound like a HUGE nerd don't I... Trust me, I'm not that bad in real life. Honestly.

Alright guys, I've been really busy lately and haven't got much done (but I have gotten a little done). I've got some good news though. MOST OF MY WATERCOOLING STUFF IS HERE! So far I have...

Both rads (Black Ice Pro 120.1, Black Ice Pro 120.2)
Pump (Hydor SELTZ 35 (450GPH))
Tubing (10ft. PrimoFlex UV Blue)
Coolant (Fluid XP+ HP UV Blue)
Clamps

All I need now are the blocks (CPU, GPU, chipsets), a fillport, my res (which I'll be making), and a few other bits and pieces (fittings for the res, T fitting for the fillport, RadGrill).

Also, I've been working on the pump mount. I forgot to take pics, and I'm mostly done, so when I finish I'll post it up.

Wow, been a while eh? Anyways, I haven't had much time for anything lately, and even less for modding. I've got a few things to show you though. Not much, but it's getting there.

Here's the front/top/bottom of the res. Bent with the trusty heatgun.

It will go on one of the removable hard drive trays like this.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0131.jpg

Here's the bracket for the pump.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0132.jpg

Which looks like this with the pump.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0133.jpg

Which goes in this 3.5" bay tray.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0134.jpg

Which ends up looking like this. Foam on the bottom is for noise reduction.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0135.jpg

I'm hoping for a little more time on this today, possibly unrivetting the case to cut the hole for the 120.2 rad.

Yikes, been a while. I have good reason for that though (or I like to think so at least :p).

This update is from impatience. I couldn't wait for Performance-PCs any longer, so I just ordered some other stuff. Originally, I was going to get an EK-Wave block, but since EK is designing a new block, and it's been 6 weeks since Performance-PCs gave me the 3 week notice for new blocks, I decided to get something else. I just ordered...

Danger Den TDX for LGA775
2 Swiftech MCW30 Chipset blocks
Danger Den Fillport and Danger Den fittings <-- For my res

You'll notice I didn't get a GPU block. I'm waiting on Newegg for that one, and even then, I don't think I'll watercool the X1600Pro. I'll wait until I have my 8800GT, and then I'll put the block on that, instead of doing it twice.

As soon as this stuff comes in, I'll be going hard at this. It's in the 30's - 50's around here right now (fahrenheit) so I need to finish this before I lose the chance.

Later guys.

The boy 4rm oz

You should get the Swiftech Apogee GTX over the Danger Den block, or if anything replace that Danger Den TDX with the new version with the pins in it (like the Apogee GTX).

.Maleficus.
11-14-2007, 07:34 AM
I would have gotten the GTX, but I would be waiting STILL for that, because it's waaay cheaper at Newegg, and they don't have the MCW60 in. And either way, the TDX still does perform very well, and was ~$10 less than the GTX at Newegg.

The boy 4rm oz

Woah. Update, can it be?

Yes.

Not a big one, but I've been busy, and finding time for this is really hard. All I have left to buy for this is my 8800GT(S), MCW60, and some fans. Then, all I need to do is finish the mod and it'll be set. So, lets get started.

Here's all the WC parts so far.

The front stripped of the door and panel.

Top had to be removed for this next part.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0255.jpg

And here it is.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0256.jpg

RadGrill placement. This is where the 102.2 rad will be.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0258.jpg

DD Fillport placement.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0259.jpg

Skip ahead an hour, and here's the end result. Cut with a Dremel and hole saw. Sorry fo the lack of WIP pics, I'll try for some next update.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF0327.jpg

That's all for now, up next I have some more cutting on the side panel, some cutting on the plexi for the side panel, some painting, some mesh, some lighting, some waterloop-ing, and more.

Yes! One step closer to completion. I have just placed my order for an EVGA 8800GT Superclocked (with ET:QW :D). Only remaining parts I need to order: GPU waterblock (maybe MCW60, maybe EK's new 8800GT block) and some fans. Then, I just need to cut, paint, sand, file, and all that good stuff. Our Christmas break is starting this weekend, so expect some updates in the coming week.

The MCW-60 is a great block, I will be using it on my 8800GTX. It beats the Danger Den full coverage block by 1-2*c on an old 8800GTS and is still $100AUD cheaper even after buying the G80 adapter plate and the extra RAM sinks and Mosphet sinks.

After buying everything I'll need though (the 8800 RAM sinks, MCW60) it's only about $30 cheaper. But, I think I might go that route, because I don't know if the EK block will get in the way of my South bridge block. The only part of the MCW60 that would would be a RAMsink.

Man am I pumped for this though. I've been waiting to use all my new stuff for the end of this mod, but this is one thing that I WON'T be waiting to use. Deffo going straight into the PC.

But, as this is my first WC'd rig, I need help with the setup. (I think I've asked this before, but I can't remember). Is this the best way, or is there a better way?

Pump > CPU > South bridge > 120.1 rad > GPU > North bridge > 120.2 rad > Res > Pump

I was thinking about changing around the North and South bridges, but the North bridge will get hotter, so having it at the end makes more sense (to me at least). Ideas?

Well, I just got the Christmas present I bought myself.

It's the 8800GT! I didn't have time to install it today, but tomorrow I'll be cleaning off my X1600Pro drivers, pulling that out, putting the 8800GT in, and rockin'. Merry Christmas eh? I'll also finish up a little painting I did, post some pics, and start some more work.

Alright guys, small update.

I did some work on the mobo tray. Instead of painting it black like the interior will be, I decided to paint it blue. Just to stand out a little more.

Here's my airbrush booth :D.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF1035_edited.jpg

Primed...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF1036_edited.jpg

Blue. Don't worry about the streaky, crappy paint job. It looks good where it matters (the handles and such). The middle area didn't even need to be painted because it will be covered by the mobo anyways, I just wanted to make sure that I painted enough that it will look ok with the mobo on.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF1038_edited.jpg

Today, I have the day off, so I'll be working on the pump mount again (attaching it to the case), and possibly a cover for it. I'll also be thinking about which GPU block I'm getting, and maybe a few more odds and ends. I need to work more on lighting and such, but we'll see what I have time for today.

Cheers.

I've actually been working on this a little, and in a little bit I'm going to cut some more plexi for the res. Then, I'll polish it up, epoxy it all together, and post an update. It won't be a TO res or a brinkz0r res (if you haven't seen his thread here (http://thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12605), check it out!), but I'm adding a little something inside just to make it a little more interesting.

Until then,

And yes, the aluminum is SOOO much easier to cut than steel.

Ok guys, so I have 1 more big piece to cut for the res, then drilling some holes for the fittings, and my little surprise. Like I said, it won't be much, but it should hopefully work out and look cool in use. Till later tonight...

Alright guys, here's a small update. I say small, because the amount of time cutting plexi takes only let me do so much.

Anyways...

Some old stuff. Remember the modular 3.5" pump mount? Well, I never actually finished it. This might not be "finished" yet, but the mounting is.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF1039.jpg

This just shows what I did. Drilled some holes, put in some screws and nuts.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF1040.jpg

Cut out another of these side panels. This one is marked for fittings.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/DSCF1080.jpg

That's really all I did, except I cut out the back panel too for the res. You can guess what I'm doing when I get home from school!

But wait! There's more! I forgot about the little preview I have for the surprise!

Well guys, bad news.

Today is my day off, and the day I was hoping to get some of that pesky cutting done. Looks like that's no longer an option. It's -16F here right now (without windchill) so it looks like I'll be working on whatever is possible to do indoors. We'll see what I can get done :(.

Well, like I said I would, I was working on the non-garage part of this today. I ran into a HUGE problem.

The way I have the radiator and pump mounted doesn't leave enough room for my DVD drive!

#$@! *&%# NO!

So, I'll be moving the pump to where the res is now, and I'll be making a new res. Great. The only good thing that comes from this is it lets me use some of my new res ideas.

Yes, after 5 months of being dormant, the project is back. Our weather here in WI has been quite weird, and because if this I haven't been able to work on this as I'd like. We had snow for the better part of April, we had 40º weather in May (going to 80º as well) and school was hectic. But, now it's summer and I have more time. I don't have anything else for now, but I'm going to get some work done Friday.

Wow, a month and a half since my last post. Time has really gotten away from me. I've got a couple things going on with this project right now. First off is a hardware change. My EVGA 8800GT just took a crap on me and (as soon as I can find an anti-static bag) will be off on RMA. The timing really couldn't have been better though; more new hardware will be in the near future so I won't be using the computer until it's here. Here are the new changes -

Intel QX6700 (or QX6850, I'd rather have the 6700 though)
- And because I'll be getting a quad and my current board and OC quads...
Asus P5Q or similar 780i board
- And because the QX6700 has a 1066MHz FSB
4GB G.Skill DDR2-1066
New EVGA 8800GT SC
200GB Maxtor SATA that I pulled from my mom's old computer

Total cost of which will be (as of today) around $430. I figure that I'd get better performance out of the QX6700 with the RAM running 1:1 with the CPU verses the QX6850 not running 1:1 with the RAM. That way I'd be able to OC with the unlocked multi on the CPU and tighten the timings on the RAM. Does that sound right? Or do you think I'd be better off spending $40 more and getting the QX6850? I want to keep the upgrade as cheap as possible (which is why I have the P5Q on there; P45 and about $120) so if you can suggest a different board that isn't too expensive I'm open to suggestions. I've been out of the motherboard game for a while so I don't know what's best for overclocking, other than the P45 and X48 being good. I don't have plans for SLI but you never know..

Anyways...

I've also got some things done on the case and I plan on painting the innards in a little bit. I've put some older hardware in it now, just for a mock-up so I can get an idea of what it'll be. I've got a pretty good idea of where the pump will go (under the two hard drives) but I need to get the rest of the hardware in so I can work out res stuff. Post edit will get some pictures in later tonight.

Edit:

Hard drives/pump placement.

Yeah, I seriously didn't realize how long ago my last post was. I figured it was 2 weeks or so, but then again, I didn't realize it was almost August . At least all that time was put to good use. Now I have money to mod!

So what do you think about the changes? Is the Asus P5Q any good? I wouldn't even mind spending $200-$250 if the board would overclock the hell out of the QX6700 and the RAM, but the P5Q seemed like a good performer for the budget minded.

Actually... just checked Newegg and this board looks pretty nice (though I can't find any reviews). Asus P5QC (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131327). 6 DDR2 slots, 8 SATA and the MOSFET sinks aren't connected to the n/bridge so I wouldn't need to replace them. That might be the way to go for $150.

The boy 4rm oz
07-28-2008, 10:43 AM
Pretty cheap for a DDR3 board. I haven't heard anything bad about the ASUS P5 series, then again I haven't heard much about them at all.

The heatsinks remind me of the Sydney Opera House lol.

Pretty cheap for a DDR3 board. I haven't heard anything bad about the ASUS P5 series, then again I haven't heard much about them at all.
That's the thing really. They have gotten pretty good reviews on Newegg (P5Q and P5Q-D anyways) but there aren't a whole lot of them. I really don't care too much about SLI since the 8800GT is still a pretty bomb card by itself so what I really need is a good overclocker. The 680i had FSB holes everywhere and even with XFX's BIOS there were still problems. Not to mention the layout of the 680i was repulsive. I really like how the P5QC has all the front connections on the bottom; with my 680i they were thrown all over the place.

Motherboards are so tricky... Maybe I'll just scrap all the hardware and get a Skulltrail rig :D.

The boy 4rm oz
07-28-2008, 11:00 AM
Ah that's why I got a DFI LANParty 680iLT. It has all the features of a fully fledged 680i board (bios and expansion slot wise) but the layout has been tweaked to be 100% enthusiast friendly. All the connectors are on the bottom right corner of the board and it also has heatsinks on little hot spots which manufacturers usually forget.

.Maleficus.
07-28-2008, 11:28 AM
I was considering a DFI board since they are enthusiast oriented (and they made the best 939 boards IMO) but the X48 and P45 boards (I think that's what they were) were pretty expensive and since I won't be using CrossFireX why pay extra for it? I'll probably wait for some reviews of the P5QC before I buy anything, but for $20 more it seems like a much better deal. 6 DDR2/3 slots and same layout.

Anyways... I've got a big project planned out for today, before I go to work. I've got a little corner in my basement with all my computer stuff that needs to be cleaned out, and while I'm at it I'm going to set it up with some tables and all my modding gear. Before, during and after shots will be up tonight.

Are regular dual-core xeons compatible with skulltrail? I'm trying to convince my friend to go that way.

.Maleficus.
07-28-2008, 12:24 PM
http://processormatch.intel.com/CompDB/SearchResult.aspx?Boardname=d5400xs

Compatible processor list for Skulltrail. Have him go with this - Asus Z7S WS (http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=82&l3=644&l4=0&model=2090&modelmenu=1). It's compatible with the 51xx, 52xx, 53xx and 54xx series of CPUs. He can pick up 2 quad core E5405's for $480, instead of $800+ for one Skulltrail compatible CPU.

Edit: Plus, unlike the Skulltrail it is regular ATX, not E-ATX. Pick up two of those CPUs, a couple of decent coolers and 2 4850's and you'd be off to a good start :D.

So, I've got some pictures now. I'm not done (the last pic is where it currently stands) but I've made some good progress. As soon as this is done I'll have a much better place to work on Shark. So, lets go.

Here's what I started with.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/Shark001.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/Shark002.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/Shark003.jpg

*barfs* Horribly messy. How I ever managed to use my computer down there is a mystery. This is what my Shark layout looked like.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/Shark004.jpg

My first task was organizing the CDs, DVDs, games, and all my other disk-style objects. This is just what was on top of my desk, I still have ~50 CDs in the drawer.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/Shark005.jpg

These are the parts that weren't already in boxes. LG DVD burner, 512MB stick of PC2-3200, dead 120GB WD and my Ultra test PSU.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/Shark006.jpg

My computer is moving back up to my room in the fall because it won't be as hot, so I pulled my Z5300-e's out as well. I forgot how large the sub was.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/Shark007.jpg

And I moved a few more things out. Trunk is gone, airbrush has been cleaned and moved, my box of 20 or so Xbox 1 games has been evacuated and until I get some shelving or storage, it'll probably stay this way. Here I come Target! (or Walmart..)

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l257/andypwnsall/Shark008.jpg

I'm hoping to get one big area for all of my Shark stuff and another area just for my modding supplies. I'll be back at this tomorrow.

Edit: Also, I just got back from shipping my 8800GT out to EVGA. Should arrive there Friday sometime so we'll see where it goes from there.

Yeah the DFI boards are expensive but you get what you pay for, a rock solid piece of tech. It took me over 4 months to get my 680iLT board cos there was a world wide shortage on release from all the back orders.

Hmmm... I might be having second thoughts on the P5QC. I was reading a memory article over at Bit-tech and they said that their P5Q-D would blue screen or jitter frequently with 8GB in it (or memory in all four slots). I know I'm only getting 4GB to start but I will for sure be adding to that, for at least 8GB (maybe even 12GB because it has 6 slots). Time to keep looking.. and cleaning.

O teh noes!

The Big Deal has just arrived at Retail Edge and I don't have enough points to make it into the second round of purchases. I mean, I am happy that I made enough points in one week to qualify, but I really need that QX6700! Hopefully I can make 1650 points in 5 days :D:D. The sad thing is, as soon as The Session and The Lab come out and I take them, I'll probably earn 1500 points. OMFG I'M SO ANXIOUS. At least there's a limit to how many items someone can buy .

*For those of you who don't know what Retail Edge is, it's a program Intel does for people working in retail selling Intel products. You go online every month, learn about Intel products and take quizzes to earn points. At the end of the year, Intel has The Big Deal, a huge discount on certain items for qualifying members.

So, as I previously posted, I've been looking at motherboards. I've got a pretty big decision to make, and I'm really stuck. Here's the thing; I've narrowed it down to an Intel P45 board or an Nvidia 7xx board. My thoughts:

P45 + Good overclocker, most boards are relatively cheap
7xx + SLI if I want, overclocking seems to be decent
P45 - No SLI
7xx - Expensive to get a "good" board (780i or 790i Ultra)

I was originally looking at the Asus P5QC because it could do DDR2/3, but after reading a couple lackluster Newegg reviews I'm back at the choosing stage. Though I usually try to stay away from the lower end of things, I've been looking at 750i boards, like the EVGA 750i SLI FTW (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188026). It doesn't actually seem too bad, since I'm not using DDR3 and the 8800GT can only be in a 2-card config, but I mean, it's a 750i. Plus, I'd need to buy MOSFET coolers since the heatpipe would be taken out. The FTW version has PCI-E 2.0 2x16 which is awesome but I need recommendations. School's starting soon so I'll be back to working less be hey, if you guys think I need to just get over it and spend the money on a decent board I'll do it. $250-300 is worth it if I won't be upgrading again in a year.

I got the cheapest possible new full size atx motherboard from newegg. It was $30 , and I got it as a combo deal for $30 off with a case that was $30 after a MIR. It only supports celerons, P4s and Pentium Ds, and has no SLI, and not much overclocking, but it works. I say, that if you have the money, and are not going to be upgrading to one of Intel's eight-core CPUs next year, get the best that your money can buy, that has features that you will actually use, within reason, of course.

The 750i FTW board is a very good contender. A solid board with SLI support. I am putting one in my mates new PC.

Today is the 14th!

And I just ordered my QX6850 :D. My computer area has been cleaned, I have an entire cabinet with my Shark stuff organized and I've got a new parts list. Here's what it looks like.

Intel Quad Core Extreme QX6850
4GB G.Skill DDR2-1066
EVGA 8800GT Superclocked
New PSU which you'll see shortly

I still need to figure out a new motherboard and I'll probably get a new pump, probably a Swiftech MCP655. I'll be buying some black paint for the interior, getting some sort of cable sleeving for the LEDs, finish cutting windows and panels and making some covers for parts. Pictures soon.

Great news on the QX6850 mate, a real bargain. AS for the mobo I still think the eVGA 750i FTW board is a very good contender. Instead of the Swiftech pump how aboit a Laing DDC3.2 with a plexi top. It will cost you more but damn they look sweet lol.

I'm selling my current computer to a friend, so I think I will get a Q6600 and a 780i board. DDR3 would be nice, but I don't feel like spending an extra $130 to get the 790i Ultra.
