Hi,i am new here and I think i found a great community for my modding ideas...I a have the idea of building a framed htpc with metal angle 2'' X 2'' with surface in 1/4 plexiglass.I want something that will record video (pci tv tuner card) and maybe a mid-range 7600 gt graphic card I also think of amd in maybe am2 or older socket 939 with 1go of ram...

The ''special'' thing on this mod is that I will forge and weld all piece of steel together with a MIG welding machine.I have some question that need answer tought...

1)Where can I found a power and a reset button?
2)If I split tv cable with a cable splitter will i change tv channel at the same time if I change channels with the tv tuner remote?
3)Can I have all the hardware for less than 350$? (Forget about the steel and the plexi I have it free,I just want to know for the pieces...)
4)Is there a place where I can found mother tray

Thank!

Just found this : http://cgi.ebay.ca/nVIDIA-GeForce-6100-Athlon64-X2-Socket-AM2-Micro-ATX-MB_W0QQitemZ290146955051QQihZ019QQcategoryZ99245QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I think I will not take a graphic card, after all I want something cheap, maybe I will put this money in more ram or a big hard drive...

I saw on the internet that the integrated geforce 6100 video circuit is great (It can run doom 3 at 24 fps!!!) Anyway it is not for gaming but more for surfing and recording video...

2)If I split tv cable with a cable splitter will i change tv channel at the same time if I change channels with the tv tuner remote?

Welcome to TBCS!

If I understood.. you want to split the cable behind the TV, and then run one to the TV and one to the computer.. you're wondering if you're watching something on the TV and the comptuer at the same time, and you change the channel on the TV, does it change the channel on the computer.

No it doesn't. Now, the only exception to that would be if you're running the cable to the computer from a box.

So, here's the setup.

Wall ==>> splitter ==>> -1-> TV (digital box..) -2-> PC

Let me know if you have other questions about that. I used to install cable.

1)Where can I found a power and a reset button?

Rip them out of any old computer? Look on a dump .. in friends attics .. under beds .. there are plenty laying around :)

2)If I split tv cable with a cable splitter will i change tv channel at the same time if I change channels with the tv tuner remote?

??? this question isn't clear so I will answer it both ways:

1) If you split the input cable - before it goes into the TV card - the TV card remote will only alter the channel on the TV card, not on any other devices the split cable leads a signal into.

2) If you split the output from the TV card the remote will change the channel on all devices that output goes to.

3)Can I have all the hardware for less than 350$? (Forget about the steel and the plexi I have it free,I just want to know for the pieces...)

Probably if you shop around, without any trouble at all. There are some links in this thread (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9628) to information that might help.

4)Is there a place where I can found mother tray

Do you mean a motherboard or a motherboard tray? If you mean a tray .... well .. that old computer you found under your friends bed and stole the power button from will happily donate you a motherboard tray if you approach it with a Jigsaw, dremel, anglegrinder or just about anything else that cuts metal :)

If you mean a motherboard then ... a computer shop or ebay would be good places to start.

Also you can just fabricate one (tray not motherboard) - from plexiglas or wood or teddybears (BE CAREFUL WITH THIS OPTION: ARTIFICIAL HAIR CAN SOMETIMES BE HIGHLY ELECTROSTATIC) :)

"Expand Slots
1 PCI Express x16 slot
1 PCI Express x1 slot
2 PCI slots"

I think the presence of that PCI-Express slot indicates highly that it will take a graphics card - but like you say you may not need one.

Just finished the up and down 2'' x 2'' metal angle base.I also applied a little couch of glossy anti-rust paint for preventing rust on this week-end.

I also cut the base plexiglass will do the same for the top...I also found this on ebay : http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300139758171&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=020

I just want to know if the power and the reset button are on 12v... I will also take the drive bay from an old case that laying around...I have some good idea..

A+++

The power and reset buttons on a PC aren't a powered thing. The switch simply completes the circuit. You won't find a 12v feed off the wires there. With those switches you'll probably find there is an additional connector for the power. You can find 12v on the yellow wires of your PSU's molex connectors.

I know that the power button don't need 12v (Im an electromecanician, and I play very often with circuit and domestic ac and dc current). The thing I want to know is if the inside led of the button on the 12v can be feed by the motherboard (You know this power and hd reding led...)

Crazy Buddhist

The power LED connects on the motherboard header for the front panel. This is where you usually find the hdd and power led connections. look at your motherboard manual to see which pins.

they run off the mobo direct I have no idea what voltage it is passing to them.

Anyone?

Bucko

no, they are only 3v. You can run an LED without a resistor, so the 12v switches will be very dim, unless you can take the resistor out.

Redundant
08-12-2007, 06:29 PM
According to the Ebay description, the LED is on it's own circuit.

So this will be very simple as there probably is no resistor.

This switch is similar (http://www.frozencpu.com/ele-71.html?id=QYGmtktB) and has no resistor: two contacts for LED @ 3v and two contacts for switch.

Ok,so I will plug the switch led direct on a molex, which one are the positive and negative wire for the 12v?

To answer your next question, black is negative and red is 5v.

The switch you were looking at on ebay is a described as a "latching-type" which If I understand that terminology correctly means it stays live/connected when pushed on.

The type of switch you need is a momentary "switch" that makes contact when pushed and drops the contact when released. These are the switches used to trigger the Power supply and computer starting and resetting.

The one redundant linked to looks more appropriate for your purposes unless I have misunderstood what "latching type" means:

This switch (http://www.frozencpu.com/ele-71.html?id=QYGmtktB) is similar and has no resistor: two contacts for LED @ 3v and two contacts for switch.

P.s : For user that are interested,i found this momentary switch with led on 12v : http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300094129407&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:middle:ca

If that isn't clear: I would defend with my life your right to express an opinion. But I am not going to waste any time on someone who keeps asking questions, saying they know it all and then never thanking anyone who is helpful.

What CrazyB is saying is that all the switches you are posting from Ebay are INDUSTRIAL SWITCHES. THEY ARE FOR ELEVATORS, not PCs. They won't work on PCs.

Take a look at the link I posted above. Unless the switch specifically says it's momentary and uses 3 or 12 volts for the LED on a separate circuit, it will not work.

Do you understand?

EDIT: The last one you posted _might_ work, but I'm not sure. You won't be able to plug the LED into the power light header though; it might damage it when it goes into sleep mode and reverses the voltage to it. (Yes, I know LEDs are diodes, but they can still be damaged using it as one.) And this in the description: "lighted when on. or could be wired to make it lighted alternate" makes me think it isn't on a separate circuit.

Well then fix it! Either resize them or post thumbnails of the big pictures. 2200x1700 is far too big! I can't even tell what I'm looking at when the pictures so big and I need to scroll side to side.

Not too bad electro. Great job on the welding. I get the feeling this poject was kinda rushed though. Your plexi work didn't turn out too bad. With a little bit of filing and some flame polishing, I'm sure you could clean it up nicely.

Not once they are posted though. It's fine when you click on links, Firefox and IE resize them, but when they were posted in the forum with the [IMG] tags, they post up full size.

Browser settings or not, they were still too damn big to be posted on the forum as they were.

And the correct spelling of Appologise is with an S if you use the Queen's English, not the American version.

There is one thing I would do differently in future: send him a PM and not put it in the thread, so for that and that alone, to electro: "I appologise" - the content of what I said would have been identical.

Right, here is the final warning.
Play nice in here, I've said it once already, I'm saying it for a final time.

I've given out some -reps here and as far as I'm concerned, that is the end of it.

P.s : Finaly my brother motherboard didn't ''short'' is was just a bad wiring in the leds that caused sparks, the motherboard posted today, but it didn't boot into windows (It was the reason my brother ask me to build him a new computer...).New I was looking for a motherboard based on nvidia video chipset 6100 or 6150.The goal is to make a great htpc...

I just use some regular metal files to knock down th big stuff, or when taking alot of material down to where I need it. For the fine work, I start with 600 grit sand paper and work my way up to 2000 grit. A bit boring and arm tiring, but the outcome is orgasmic. Flame polish -- I have a propane torch that you would use mainly for welding copper pipes. They're really cheap, probably around $10 - $15 dollars US.
