View Full Version : Series of unfortunate events

So heres a funny little story about bad luck that all started with the want to mod my laptop. Yes, I know, its hard to believe that anything bad can come from the want to mod something.

So first, I had the great idea of having my laptop custom painted (which was a success, thnx Commando!). So I got my wish come true, my laptop now has a bitchin' paint job. But, somehow, that has triggered a series of unlucky and unfortunate events that should take place around my laptop and only my laptop.

Well, I guess lady luck was a little jealous of my now totally awesome laptop, because when I was putting the laptop back together, I ended up snapping the lcd frame thanks to a screw that didn't want to budge (I skipped it to come back to later(because I used the wrong screws, so I had to unscrew them all), but forgot it was there, then when I pulled on the frame to take it back off, SNAP). No biggy, I can still screw in the lcd to the laptops lid (luckily, nothing has happened to that). So now I'm at the point where I am trying to hook up my laptops keyboard back into the motherboard. Yea, well, I sort of pressed too hard I guess and the connection on the motherboard snapped off. Doh! Well, whatever I guess. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse that I can use, which I was using anyways because my mouse pad stopped working a bit before even having the idea of getting a custom paint job. So life isn't _too_ bad. I can still have a portable laptop because of the wireless keyboard and mouse.

Well, I seemed to have forgotten to reinstall my laptops optical drive. Haha, awesome. I TOTALLY know where I put that when I took it out during disassembly. ...on top of a bag full of junk that I was throwing away. lol Yep, you guessed it. I somehow ended up throwing away my laptops optical drive. I think it must of slipped in the bag with me unaware some how. Well, whatever, I'm taking that in stride too, because I never really used it. Duh, I can download everything I have on CD, because I own it, therefor, its not illegal. :-)

Well, my story doesn't end there unfortunately. As much bad luck as I've had within this two week period, more is still to come. Lady luck must be REALLY jealous at this point, probably because I haven't really shown any sign of disappointment.

So my favorite place to use my laptop, is on my bed. Well, it started overheating of course, but it wasn't just because it wasn't getting enough air. It wasn't getting any air over in the gpu department. The fan had stopped moving for some reason. So I open it up, cleaned out the dust, unplugged and replugged the connection, and voila. It works again. But my laptop was still overheating, this I knew, was because of not having proper airflow coming in from the bottom of the laptop. So I bring in these cool stools that are the same height of my bed and that also have a cool design in them that would allow proper airflow. How lucky is that? Well, not really. They turned out to be not very stable. As a result, I ended up putting one too many things on one side of the stool and down she went. CRASH! Okay, now I'm panicking. That wasn't a nice soft crash, that was an ugly crash that made a sickening noise. It turns out, my fears were right, the screen had shattered. ><!!!!

Lady luck had finally received her revenge for the jealousy of me having an awesome laptop.

omg... wait. I wonder what would happen... if I unplugged the monitor from the motherboard, then plugged in an external screen to the back of the laptop? Maybe, just maybe it will work!

Well, here I am. Obviously, it worked! HAHA! I am victorious! I don't have a laptop anymore sure, if you WANT to see that as a negative be my guest. But *I* am looking at it like this. I now have the smallest desktop of anyone I know AND it has a bitchin' paint job. :D

Sorry that I didn't spend more time writing that up. Usually I can write up a pretty decent story thats easy on the eyes and the mind. But I don't feel like being articulate or well spoken, so tough beans. :P

Ouch... Is it a common model? If that were me I'd look out for a spares-or-repair one on eBay.

Victory! :D

lol I tried to think of some unbelievably awesome 300 quote, but I just couldn't think of one for this situation. So victory indeed! :D

...although, I could of wrote a side-story of how I met up with Lady Luck in front of the Bottomless Pit and then kicked her in screaming "THIS. IS. MY BITCHIN' LAPTOP!" ...or you know, something like that. :p

oh yea, I already looked believe me. lol a small ass desktop is pretty kick ass, but if it can be portable, thats still better. Basically this is the price list for what I would need to restore it.

$150-$200 for the LCD
$150-$200 for the motherboard (need it for the keyboard)
Total = $350-ish

Well, I could get away with just replacing the LCD, but A. I only have $50 bucks right now and B. That could be money used towards saving up for a new system (either laptop or desktop). Even the cheapest system Dell has to offer kicks my laptops tushie. Not that my laptop is weak, well it is, but its still pretty good. Just not compared to the new ones out there right now. For around $400 I could get a pretty sweet desktop, far better than any system that I have EVER had. $150-$200 I could get a desktop off ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Computer-with-Intel-Pentium-4-3-0-GHz-Processor_W0QQitemZ150153450735QQihZ005QQcategoryZ 140076QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) with 2gigs of ram, a 3Ghz processor and the option of having whatever graphics I want for however much I want to spend.

So it would only be wasted money to restore it in my opinion. Especially since it works fine as a desktop for now, just with the lack of upgrade-ability. Even though it has a major plus for size & portability. ;)

Wow, Thanks for the offer! I appreciate that!

But honestly, this is a good incentive for me to get a better job so I can afford to get a better laptop, or even a wicked desktop. But thanks for the offer! That was crazy generous of you! +rep for total and complete radness! (eh, I watch too much TRS [Totally Rad Show])

okay, this is kind of creepy.

So I was having a crazy nightmarish dream about computers just now. I don't know why, but I was breaking a bunch of video game consoles with my laptop for some reason, and in the process I totally trashed my laptop. It was a pretty good visual too, it looked like an ugly piece of twisted scrap metal and a totally busted up motherboard. There wasn't even a screen attached to it anymore.

So this is where it gets pretty friggen weird if you ask me.

I wake up, kind of in that way where you snap awake after a nightmare? I didn't give it much thought, so I calmed myself down a bit and went back to sleep. I swear, I don't know how long it was, but it felt like it was five minutes later when I snapped awake again. I don't even remember having a dream this time around, but I do remember having the image of a badly broken laptop right before waking up.

So this time, I don't want to go back to bed. Not that it was a scary dream or anything, I just had that weird feeling you know? The one you get right after waking up from a nightmare? Your a bit confused, your hearts pumping, your a little sweaty and you feel like you were just woken up very abruptly and rudely. Which, technically, you were. So there I am, laying in bed, trying to get my nerves settled a bit. (does anyone become afraid of the dark, or in other words, what they can't see in their room after a nightmare? ugh, worse thought/feeling ever). So, I'll admit it, I got a little spooked because I couldn't see a damn thing in my room, usually there is a streetlight/porch light that gives just enough light, but I had covered the window with a blanket to keep out the light the previous day, so the heat wouldn't come in as bad. So, I need some light, and asap.

oh yea, my laptop (now new desktop) is still on. So I reach over to turn on the monitor to flood my room with the light from the lcd display, pressed the lcd screen power button, and there it was.... it was horrifying and it instantly made my heart jump (keep in mind, I'm still a lil jumpy and my heart is still pounding away). It was...

THE BSOD!

omg, you can't be friggen serious. That bitch! Lady Luck must of sneaked into my room, thus giving me that eerie creepy feeling, and tampered with my laptop!! okay, now I'm getting emotional and I think I might cry. Don't you see? My awesomely bitchin' laptop knew what was happening and was trying desperately to send me subliminal messages through my dreams!

Okay, wow. I was thinking about selling her for parts, but I'm definitely not now. No way, nuh uh, not a chance. This baby isn't leaving my side for the rest of my life! I mean crap, I'm basically invincible now! ...well, as long as I'm asleep at least. :p

Well I hope you liked my story! I would say that a good ninety-eight point nine percent of it is true. The rest was inspired by my own imagination (aka - Lady Luck the Bitch, everything else was real/true/fact).

Btw, I turned off my laptop, then turned it back on, now she's purring like a kitten! ...although, I'm not sure if laptops are supposed to be purring. So I'm keeping an eye on it. ;)

lol omg. I TOTALLY just realized why I was doing what I was doing in my dream. I can't believe I didn't realize this earlier.

I've never been able to afford a brand new kick ass gaming console before, even the ones I have now (ps2 and xbox) were given to me basically free of charge. So THAT explains why I was taking out my fury on gaming consoles with my laptop. Now... why the HELL was I using my laptop to smash gaming consoles instead of using a 40pound sledge?

DUH!

Because in the past two weeks, I have practically obliterated my laptop! Why was the motherboard all smashed up in my dream? Because I broke a piece on the motherboard in my real laptop, maybe not rendering it completely useless, but its beyond fixing as far as ever having a keyboard again goes, so its as good as trash if I ever wanted to sell it. Why was the LCD screen missing? Because the lcd screen on my laptop is smashed AND I took it off because I no longer need it.

Wow. I'm possibly the strangest person alive. lol

That is so damn funny.

-Dave

:D

You're welcome. +rep, this story was a great read!

-Jeremy

hahaha, I totally forgot that madness part. That pretty much fits in perfectly doesn't it? :p

.....
Yay! I got two light green bars now! I feel like... THE GREEN LANTERN! ...no, thats like Bucko. lol jezuz, whats with that guy anyways? I thought I would of had my second bar weeks ago, then I look over at him and he has like 50 kagillion! lol

If you can pull the lcd out of it, let me know the make and model of the screen, and I'll see if one of mine is the same. :) One is 15", other is 15.4" wxga.

Wow... that tops pretty much everything that's ever happened to computers that I own, lol.
