While i wait for some spare panels to show up to continue work on HPr3 i decided to go back to an old mod i'd started a few months back.

The project is an Sony Subwoofer ive had sitting under my desk for a few years now, The shape of this woofer has always caught my eye, the clean simple lines
are modern and stylish....perfect for a mod!

Concept PC H-1

The woofer....these shots are quiet old now but all i have.

The only parts that will be used from the original contruction.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/DSCF0029.jpg

The original plans for this mod were to graft the front and top pansl streight onto a close sized chassis.

A concept photo shop shows you what i was planning.

This idea was soon scrapped and i opted to build the new chassis/case from plex.

Carefull measurements were taken and a trip to the local plex shop i returned with 9 peices of
very sexy cut to size satin finished plex.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/DSCF0023.jpg

First thing i felt compelled to do was to do a early mock up to check all measurements were correct.

thanx guys...its comming long vey nice, making great progress.....the sooner i can get this mod done the quiker i can get back into HPR3

Right from the start i could see the limited size of the unit was not going to allow me to arrange the hardware
in a conventional way, throwing in water to the equasion also added an extra challenge.

I could see just thru simple placement of parts that i this was going to need a 2 teir (layer) setup.

I wanted to incorp the sexy slot loading pioneer DVD into this mod... this + the eventual PSU will sit behind the motherboard,
on the lower or back side of the case.

Simply amazing Defyant, can't wait to see a finished project. Do you plan to repaint the front and top to give it a shiny look like the plexi, or are you going to leave it the duller to give it charactor?

testing

The mounts are cut from solid 10mm thick plex, counter sunk drilled and drilled for the locating screws.

Again perspex glue is used to hold these in place.

The bottem or base of the new plex chassis is glued into place, with this glued on i will be able to
stand the unit up.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_4859.jpg

The micro atx motherboard-wall/back panel can now be put in place.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_4864.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_4867.jpg

the mother board is sat into place and the brass locators are marked for threading.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_4868.jpg

after the locators are screwed in the mothercan be screwed in and the back wall can be marked for cutting to accept the rear metal IO panel.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_4874.jpg

after some carfull meauremants and some dremal cutting the IO panel can be checked for fit.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_4880.jpg

Next is to remove the unit, and check for what will be the 4 exhaust fans.

since this is such a small case, ive opted to use 4 x 40mm fans,

2 will move the air from the backside of the mother board where the psu is and 2 to remove air from the top side where the motherboard and HDD will
be sitting.

Flipping the Case upright i can next see how the HDD will sit, and check to top " roof cavity " panel for the Fan Rad mod!

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_4885.jpg

The top section is perfect to acommodate the cooling duties, it was the first thought i'd had for this mod, and has almost work out too
perfect.

The section is almost perfectly vented to handle to mod. the side vents will allow cool air in while to top vents will allow the warmed air out.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_4891.jpg

the back will also be modded with mesh to allow better flow.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_4893.jpg

a simple mock up shows that this will work fine.

some custom brackets will be welded in.

Some old speaker grill mesh will be used to make the new rear......the top section is put on hold, i'll be going into Xcom tommorrow to see
if the new cooler master watercooling kit will be a better way to go.

I love having 2 mods on the go at once!!!

when i get bored... or ideas stop flowing or i need to think about things for a bit, i can just start up on the second mod :P

it kinda feels like cheeting!!! but it seems to work :)

i wanted to get the front panel under spray putty primer while we actually had a good sunny day to work with!

needed to do a few small mods before this could be done,

starting with the smallest of mods H-1's power button! nothing special here, flush mounting it is pretty simple stuff.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5635.jpg

Next was to add a Power light and a HDD signal light!.... i wanted somthing that worked in with the curves of the mod,

putting in round lights wasnt goin to cut it.....using the same technique as the frosted style defyant lights on HPR3 i went
for somthing i think works well with this shape.

working around the shape of the fron port hole cutting 2 triangle shaped holes.

These were cleaned up...altho still not perfect the final shape will come with the shaping ofthe putty.

ruff holes are cut using a dremal

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5644.jpg

cleaned-up and shaped using small files

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5646.jpg

Next was to make a template of the shapes, scrap thin see thru plex was used.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5650.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5652.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5657.jpg

Next using the drill press and a sanding stone was to put a lip..or edge onthe small clear plex lights to allow them to sit flush with the front.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5658.jpg

The new plex lights are taken inside and are further shaped with wet rubbing and given a frosting!!

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5670.jpg

time to do the mandatory light test!!

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5675.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5674.jpg

with that out of the way... the front panel can go outside for final wetrub with 800 and a few good coats of spray putty.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5682.jpg

t'was time to get back to H-1's power source.

amicro 250w psu is to be used in H-1.. some small modding is needed and the loom is covered with simply black flex.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5676.jpg

some tidy up work is needed here, but this gives you guys the idea of where the PSU sits in relation to the layout.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5687.jpg

the inner front wall can be cut and glued in ..the hole is to allow the front port to connect.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5698.jpg

the motherboard back wall can be placed in to check all fits well.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5690.jpg

the freshly dried front facia can be tested for fit also.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5692.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5696.jpg

The porthole is connectet via a modded "baddong duct"..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5702.jpg

Defyant
08-14-2005, 11:25 AM
the idea of the front porthole is to allow air to the sublevel or rear of the case....under the mtherboard to cool the back end of the pc

heat from the motherboard side of the case is handled with help of the 2 rear fans and top 120 radfan.

Air is ducted thru the fron porthole thru the innner duct

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5707.jpg

and exhausted thru the 2 x 40's @ the rear

fitting on the top rad housing.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5719.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5717.jpg

Next was s bit of self indulgence :)

i had an idea for idea for a "interchangeable" window concept and thought what better way to try the idea then on a concept PC :)

the idea is to fab up simple channels to slot in new windows! this way i can add a colour windew to change the appearance of the case.

the end result will be to workit in with a matching front window so the case has a theme.

using a thingymajig to get some round courners

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5722.jpg

next step simple enuf :P cut out the hole.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5726.jpg

to make the channels to slide the diff windows in is just a simple matter of slide rails.

6 pecies of thin precut plex are used.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5723.jpg

the thinner 3 are glued down onto the back of the window panel

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5732.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5733.jpg

the thicker peices are then glued ontop of the tinner peices to make the channel

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_5734.jpg

Twas time to get some paint back onto the front of H-1's facia.

Wanting to keep the orig platsic texture and look i opted to use........Car bumper paint! this stuff is very durable scratch resistant enuf and
designed for covering plastic!!!!

the can unfortunatly produces less then stellar finish :( large paint blotches and very uneven.... i deciced to rub the first attemp back

and spaying the can paint into a small bottle i then transfered the paint into my air brush...

with some carefull thinning..this produced the effect i was after!

A little idea i stole off HPR3-Mega... i wondered how this would look, once i sort getting the light even i think it will be nice to have
this as an "interchangable" option like the side window idea.

first off is cut and bend to shape some clear plex

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6009.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6010.jpg

a test to see all fits well

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6008.jpg

next is to give the plex a "fost" sanding

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6013.jpg

a comparrison

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6024.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6021.jpg

next will be to do the same thing with orange shadow and green plex.

The Coolermaster Aquagate comes with a variable fan contoller for the radiator, the best place to fit this was @ the back of the case below the dual exhaust fans.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6035.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6063.jpg

With the bulk of the rear wiring finished it was time to move onto the the front of the case.

The Matrix orbital LCD is screwed into place and the atx power switch and leds are wired up

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6041.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6039.jpg

Holes are drilled and msesh on the innner front wall this will allow air into the motherboard chamber ofthe case.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6037.jpg

With the front wire loom can be passed thru the front wall and the Motherboard Panel can be "slotted" into place!

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y165/Defyantmods/Concept%20PC/IMG_6045.jpg

the top roof separator can be bolted down and the wires passed thru a precut hole for the Radiator fan.

its good to see the Fan drawing air well.

The original idea was to also mount the HDD behind the "backwall" on the underside with the CDROM and PSU.....

But this is something that i will want to change as needed....and as this pc will be used as a webserfer for the wife...i thought qik access far outweight
any athetical beinifets....

How ever! i come up with a nifty way of mounting the HDD into the base of the unit.

Using some left over Caddy screws and rubber grommet vibrating dampers i managed to solve the problem of not having the HDD sit flat on the floor...

allowing some air to pass under and not cook the hdd.

It might be nice to think up a solution for mounting the HD in some sort of black plexi case. (ofcours ventilated etc.).

Because I like the smooth look of this mod, only (in my opinion) the placing and the HD feels a bit strange. (maybe you can polish the thing ;) also looks very nice)

I think that is one smooth looking rig, and I love the frosty sanded plexi window on the front. Great work!
