"Seagate will introduce drives based on flash memory (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=storage&articleId=9032298&taxonomyId=19&intsrc=kc_top) in various storage capacities across its range of products including desktop and notebook PCs, according to Sumner Lemon at IDG News Service. The drives are expected to consume less power (longer battery life), offer faster data transfer rates and be more rugged than spinning disk, which has moving parts that can be damaged from an impact."

The idea of solid state drives has interested me since 1998, when I first heard about them.

No moving parts, no heavy platters, far more power efficient, less heat generation, and the almost instantaneous seek times... *drool*

I think we all agree that booting your OS in less than 10 seconds would be beneficial for sure, and certainly the ruggedness of the drives is a big attraction also. Since I'm going completely notebook based now, portability, efficiency, and lightweight are huuuuuge concerns for me. :D

As capacity increases, and prices continue to drop, the benefits will outweigh the cost. ;D Here's a few for sale now... (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2503&)

oooh, pretty... (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147033)

wow, pricey...

That pretty much sums up how I feel about SSD currently. I'm excited to see more technological break throughs in the future, but I'm still waiting for that day where we won't even have to worry about the size of our hard drives. They'll be able to carry so much information, that it would take only the hardest of the hardcore to fill up half of the drive! Now THAT would be cool! ...or maybe.. a hard drive, that CAN'T be filled up? haha, that goes against like the laws of physics or something, but so did those who believed the earth to be round and not flat!

on a side note, the word "throughs" doesn't seem exist apparently. Just "through", without the "s". Hmmm, me thinks I should of paid better attention in English class! lol

A few of these in RAID0 or RAID 10 would be great!

I was thinking about this, and you could put your operating systems on a solid state (as well as your games, if the thing had enough room) and then put your not-needing-to-be-fast storage on a cheap drive. It would be epic.

I used to install Quake 2 on a "Ramdrive" when I built my AMD system oh somany years ago.

OMG!
Dude, I was gonna ask EXACTLY that...
if anybody ever did a "Ramdrive".

I always dreamed of doing a 1GB ramdrive...
Would you, by any chance, remember the .bat commands to doing the drive?

Wow... long time agowz...

I'd still need to wait until it progresses more to offer more space. I could probably put a few things on it, maybe the operating system, and then all the files on my regular hard drive. It's just that my 400GB hard drive isn't always enough for me, though I do have a second 400GB one I could pull from my server if I ever needed it.

readyboost sounds awesome, but, wish you could boot from that drive, kuz that would make things alot faster, ramdrive with that tech sync'd with an sata drive would make for some really faster boot/gaming everything! too bad they only have it gone that far :-/
