Hey Guys,

Well heres the story, We have got given this project for Science due in Friday. What we have to do is make something with light or mirrors or something, our topic is optical. Now my first thought was the CD rom laser, so i got given a cd rom and everything, Pulled it apart, and fried the laser. I Was annoyed but not giving up yet, so i got a cd burner this time, i pulled it apart and it didnt have a 3 point laser, ( 3 point meaning 3 prongs with Postive, negitive, other ) it had like 8 i think. Well the next morning i was in a hurry looking for my keys, and the laser fell off my desk and i cant find it anywhere.

So what i would like are ideas of an optical project i can do for like $10 or less ( because iv used like $30 on cd drives already ). Some people have made like telescopes and binoculars, But I want something that will blow them out of the water lol.

So If you have any ideas about an optical project that is really really cool please post. I have till friday to buy stuff, build it, present it.

Also my teacher can supply me with lenses, mirrors and thats about all.

Ill be back in 6 hours to check this thread :D ( school time )

Thanks all

Sam

Why don't you go to the Dollar Store and pick up a Laser Pointer? Get some dry ice (exercise caution with dry ice) and make some fog, so you can see the laser. or something like that?

Optical... damn. Is that all he gave you for the project guidelines? I can't figure out what is trying to be taught here. What is the point of this project? To teach about the different waves of light or something?

:?

Hey guys thanks for replys

AJ@PR: Yeah I know i leave things to the last minuet. Sometimes latter like my 3 week late major assessment for Geography but I do get things done lol.

Zephik: I think theres more guidelines but i dont have the sheet atm, will bring home tommorow lol. But i think it has to help people do stuff, like telescope helps people see stars, stuff like that

Computer-Geek: thanks for these links ill look through them latter

Eclecticos: Prism? Need more details lol im a bit slow/dumb, whatever you call it lol.

Thanks

Sam

Heres How (http://www.sciencetoymaker.org/prism/assembl.html) you make a water Prism. Its reflects lights and makes rainbow colors on the wall.

Nice except one problem, how does that help people in a normal day basis?

You left that part out. .Well you might as well take in grandpoppa's reading glasses in then :D

Wait I know what you can make with a box and two mirrors a "Spy Periscope (http://www.topspysecrets.com/how-to-build-a-periscope.html)"

Use a prism to split light into the visible spectrum, and then use a voltmeter and a solar cell to find out which spectrum of light is the most efficient with a cell, and compare the voltages with white light.

Make it cooler? Use mirrors to reflect the colors seperately and split them, THEN pass that through dry ice fog. :D

(No, i didnt just come up with this.. I've wanted to try it for quite awhile, but can never seem to find a good prism.)

Or if you have a cup of water and sugar you can measure the sugar content with a laser pointer. Here (http://www.sciencebuddies.org/mentoring/project_ideas/Phys_p028.shtml)

I don't have any suggestions because I hate science with a passion, but if your assignment is due on Friday, and it's Tuesday now, I wouldn't be too picky about it. You've just got to do something that LOOKS impressive in the end. That's if you want good marks. If you want to have fun, then by all means, do something dangerous :)

(I'm not condoning dangerous science projects.)

Well the teacher said it was due last Friday and nobody done it so it was due this friday, but of cause, i can hand it in next friday if i want :D, Just tell her to leave the best for last :D I dont mean super dangerous, i just want a really good mark, but dangerous is fun too :D

If you want something very easy yet effective, take a small lamp to class with a 100 watt bulb, turn it on and hold a book or something a few inches away from the bulb long enough to get warm. Then have the teacher feel the warmth on the book. When she askes you what the point is, tell he that light has the ability to transfer energy into mass and excite electrons and chemical reactions. It's relevant in daily life because without plant photosynthesis life on Earth would not exist as we know it.

haha so simple yet effective.Ill keep that as my Friday morning rush idea lol
