OK OK .. I have a generic 450W power pack .. I know I shouldn't bought it.

And when the PC started playing up I know should have investigated it .. but

lol (not)

Now I have a dead PC - just started randomly locking yesterday then wouldn't boot. Now it was just after an error playing a wma file so it could be virus ... or it could be a dead PSU.

Now the PC won't boot even into BIOS with nothing plugged in. It's got some power and the MOBO is firing up but no video. So I may have fried my MOBO too :(

It might also be because I have an old socket 939 mobo with a v.modern PCI express G/card. The card doesn't have a separate power in so is drawing its power all through the mobo. Thats one thought I had in which case I could have fried the PSU or the MOBO.

I put the H/disk (which was the first error it said it had) in my backup machine running ubuntu and it can read it fine so ... not that.

:( oh beggar

Anyone going to suggest anything other than buying a new PSU? I think it all points to that (though I realise there may be collateral damage now too).

Ok... first do a simple test
Take the psu out and short the green wire with a black wire.. on the 20/24 atx power connector.. If the PSU fan starts working when the psu is turned on, then you haven't fried it.. completely.. Still, if it works like this 90% chances the PSU is ok.

The power draw of the video board is within limits, unless you overclocked it.. Then it would draw more power, but only when the overclock activates.. not at boot time..

If you remove the ram and the video board and you get a beep error message, then your mobo and your cpu are okay too.. If they do so, take the mobo out and leave for a while.. Maybe some magic pixies will come and do their magic. I just fixed a PC that wouldn't do anything by taking it apart, leaving the parts for 2 days and then putting it back. I'm just back from work and the PC is running for testing.. If I don't get a phone call telling me #%@#%#$ then I fixed it and it won't do any more gimmicks.. So, if all else fails, take your stuff and let it cool :) separately :)
Hope I helped :)

I'd buy a new PSU, it's the best thing you can do. This is why generic PSUs are not recommended. I will say that components are a little more hardy than some think. My old AMD system had a PSU go BOOM (literally) and it still works!

Well, a big system with a big overclock can't be powered by a generic PSU.. It will work, maybe, but you get limitations and reboots and.. failure.. A new PSU is the best choice, but if you need your PC working now.. or if you are trying to figure out if you should buy more than only a PSU... ;) Also, newer PSUs hold better in bad electrical conditions: when there was a short power outage, 3 of 6 PCs in my old room stayed functional, all others rebooted. Which ones stood the test: those with big, heavy PSUs :)

CrazyBuddhist whistles and twiddles his thumbs

... before admitting his X2 was running at 2.695Ghz not 2.2Ghz and GPU at 600Mhz not 459Mhz

...

then pops out to the shops sure in the knowledge he is doing the right thing.

If I were you, I'd buy a new PSU.
Everything points to that.
Don't worry about the overclocking. :)

As to the cheap-O PSU, small story:::
In my current rig, I had a fancy PSU 550W from NewEgg that had great reviews.
It died. Stopped working.
I bought a $15 PSU, and that has worked flawlessly for the past months.
Just in case, I bought a second $15 PSU.

Curiously enough, when I 'jumped' the cables on the 550W one, it works.
So now my rig is running dual PSUs... with the cheap-O as the "main" one.

Hope that helps, and hope you clear things up! :D

700W 4 Rail power supply installed at ridiculous cost. Works fine. Hmmm ... I wonder how far I can OC this thing now .. maybe thats where all my instabilities lay before.

Cheers guys

sounds like to me your psu cant handle your clock settings..id try resetting to defaults and try to power it on

Well, better PSUs mean better stable OCs!

Too right Crenn !!!!!

I have got from 2.695 stable to 2.860 not yet stable but works and i only changed the PSU !!! I know main main bottleneck is RAM I need some DDR400 that will oc up a lot. Any recommendations?

I don't recommend RAM with EPP. Unless it's a server.

And that RAM will work for you, it will be underclock when you put it into your mother board, you then overclock it to where you need!

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Or so they say.
I'm willing to have absolute power in order to prove them wrong. :p

In any event, CrazyB, you're hooked! :)

Overclocking!

I'm hooked on life guys. I wish I could meet you for real and down a few beers and share some storIes. I may have been dealing with some personal crap but I have always been an optomistic, happy, creative and forward looking person. I've also always done everything to the max.

I have lived an overclocked life. At 15 I was told I was a genius, at 22 I was an international banker having left university because it was boring. I was flying to switzerland and dealing in hundreds of millions of dollars.

Then I quit and went and lived up a mountain - got a job washing dishes in the French alps. Bought a pair of 2.03 Rosignol Grand Slalom Skis and Dynastar four buckle racing boots and went to the top of a 2900M mountain. I taught myself ti ski by falling down red runs. I often had a few beers first to soften the blow.

lol

Overclocking ... you havent seen anything .. wait til I get an AM2 board and a nice fat Opteron. ;) !!!! OR black box AMD

As Dave said the other day you "got" me !

overclocking is very addictive, until it goes BANG

Then you'll be happy to know all of my overclocking hasn't burnt out anything. KNOW THE LIMITS.
