View Full Version : I might buy a new Motorcycle

I'm thinking it's time to buy a new bike. I'm looking at a few different things, but I think I've narrowed it down to two bikes.

The Triumph Thuxton:

And the Yamaha TDM900:

The Triumph looks great, but I'm not sure how it would be for longer rides.
The Yamaha is ugly as a metaphor, but having owned and earlier model, I know just how good they ride and mine had over 220,000km on it without a rebuild.

Both are priced about the same, both are 900cc parallel twins, both great in there own ways and both very appealing to me.

If only I could afford both...

I actually kind of like the look of that Yamaha, lol. I'd like to get a bike one day, we'll see what happens in the next ten years, I really do like bikes better than cars. Since my truck is pretty much done in (rusted out really bad), I could look into getting a bike, just have to be careful with NC drivers though.

I say go with the Yamaha, it looks cool to me, and if it's reliable, then definitely go for it... unless you can't find a good kangaroo to ride.

Triumph.

EDIT: (but then again I am a Yamahater) I think all the Japanese bikes look the same so it IS my issue.

Why not the Bonneville (http://triumph.co.uk/uk/Motorcycle_Bonneville.aspx)? It's a more upright riding position than the Thruxton.

I know a couple of owners and they love theirs. Unfortunately I only know them through a mailing list, so I haven't had a chance to ride their bikes.

Or even the scrambler (http://triumph.co.uk/uk/Motorcycle_Scrambler.aspx)

The Thruxton just has the GGG factor. (Groin Grabbingly Good).

I like the Scrambler more than the Bonnie. But of the three in the family, the Thurxton just does it for me.

The TDM is probably one of the best bikes I've ridden. Great on bumby back roads and some mild dirt, fun on the race track, upright and easy to throw around through traffic, yet comfy enough to do a 1000km day.

Although, I would really like one of these:

It's a custom Triumph Bonneville T100 built by Deus Ex Machina (http://www.deus.com.au/), called The Street Tracker.
It's about $10,000 over a standard Triumph. I took those pics while I was in their shop getting some stuff.

Mmmmm.... I do like flat-track styled bikes.

I wonder if I could make something like that out of my XS400.......

This is an XS650, so it's close:

And a couple more for fun:

This is an XS650, so it's close:Teah, but mine is the XS400 DOHC (http://www.bikez.com/pictures/yamaha/1984/17930_0_1_2_xs%20400%20dohc_Image%20credits%20-%20freco.jpg), so it looks rather different.

Still, they all look the same with no tank or seat, so no problem really.

Ahhh, ok. It would still be doable, but you might need another tank to pull it off too.

While we are talking Yamaha 400's, here's a Deus SR400. It looks so beautiful in the flesh.

Definately a different tank, that one just wouldn't work with a flat tracker seat/tail unit.

Now, this (http://thekneeslider.com/images/lineaweaver.jpg) is more like it...

Man, this thread is reminding of how much I miss riding my recumbant bike... I'll have to bring it to the shop one day and get that shifter fixed and calibrated and repainted and tuned and install a new OS... that or just get it fixed... lol.

The Yamaha defo has a more Ratty look to it. The Triumph would be quite a style change, no?

thats a super charger, this (http://www.bigccracing.com/UserFiles/Image/Shop%20Pictures%20May%202005%20073.jpg) is a turbo. i think this (http://content.boredmuch.com/picture/03071681.jpg) classifies as one too.

how about a Honda Rune?

Or a Triumph Rocket III

That's a 2.3 litre engine...

Personally, once i get my drivers license, i can see me using my bro's "street legal" (we did it ourselves) wr400 dirtbike. It's definitely not a road bike, but it IS a beautiful ride, comfy, and jumps very well. It's the yz400 with wider gears.

Personally, I love the look of that thuxton. It's not a crotch rocket, and very not a cruiser. I would definitely ride that if I had a license.

That Triumph Rocket III is sex on wheels! Beautiful.

The other thing I may buy is a Yamaha XJR1300:

That pic was taken on the day I got my last one. Man I loved that bike. Shame some wanker wrote it off when he t-boned me.

Nice, have you considered a ZRX1200?
http://cginternet.net/images/zrx1200.jpg
That's my friend on his. I had a go, smooooth and torquey.

Bucko

I do like them, but if I'm getting a big naked bike, it'll be an XJR13. I've ridden a couple of ZRX1100's, but not the 1200.

I'm going to go down to the local bike dealers this morning after work and see what they can do for me.
The Yamaha dealer and the Triumph dealer are almost next door to each other.

Well I took the Thruxton out for a test ride this morning. It's very nice! I think I'm in love.
I've put down a deposit on one and pending finance I should have it tomorrow!

Thanks to this topic I am looking into Triumph for my new bike. Thanks Bucko, was looking at a Sportster, but I prefer the Speedmaster. I'm heading down to my local bmw/triumph dealer, and going to hopefully take it for a spin. Love the look of naked bikes, and the thruxton is something different. My roommate has a honda 919, also known as the Hornet in europe, that thing is fast, easily pop a wheelie with it with little to no effort.
