Hello everyone! You may know me from over from the bit-tech.net forums, but heres a little about myself; I am currently 17 years old, live in Southern California, and I love modding. My latest project, Gearbox is the successor to my first project Black & White Wavemaster (pictured below):
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/BWHi-resext.jpg

Anyways, on with the mod! First I'd like to thank my sponsor(s):
Petra's Tech
and
Swiftech

OK lets begin:

Goals for this project:
-to have a full spec system
-mATX form factor
-aesthetically appealing
-Water-cooled
-T.I.R. (Total Internal Modularization): basically, I need to retain full use of the removable motherboard tray and have the system water-cooled, so I will modularize the tubing too
-Must be upgradeable
PLans:

Case - Lian Li v300b (completely stripped of internals):
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00113-1.jpg

Hardware:
Starting from left to right - 2x 120mm Noctua Fans, 2x 80mm Noctua fans, D-tek Fuzion, D-tek Db-1, Lian-Li v300b, 2x Black Ice Stealth 120mm radiators,
On the motherboard tray:
Intel e6700
Abit Fatal1ty mATX mobo with HDMI out
Evga 8800 GTS
4gb Patriot extreme edition RAM
2x Samsung T series 500gb Hard drives

Materials/Tools:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00102.jpg
2 sheets clear plexi, 2 boxes of SAE screws+nuts, 4 plastic friction hinges

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00152.jpg
New toy: Dremel Scroll saw
-----
First, I bought some chrome speaker spikes
first i took off the stock feet, then drilled a larger hole to acomidate the new feet, and installed, here are the pics:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00146.jpg
closeup
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00147.jpg
other side:
3 out of the four nuts went in fine, but one was not going in because of the motherboard tray rail, so i filed it down to size and now it fits:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00151.jpg
tight fit
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00153.jpg
final product looks nice
-----
Next, I did some metal work :

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00156.jpg
started by mummifying the whole case
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00157.jpg
cut up a cardboard template for the radiator placement
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00163.jpg
drew it on, colored areas to be cut
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00164.jpg
began cutting with this beasty dremel attachment
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00165.jpg
first hole cut, not perfect, but pretty good, it will eventually be covered with a grill anyways
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00166.jpg
filing rough edges
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00167.jpg
both holes done

next, PSU supports needed to be fabricated since the stock v300b has no where near enough support to hold a monster like the Enermax Infinity i have planned for it.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00169.jpg
fabricated this out of aluminum strips and rivets
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00170.jpg
drilled the lower portion in order to attach it to the PSU lip
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00168.jpg
taped up the lip and attached a drill bit to my dremel flex shaft
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00171.jpg
holes drilled
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00172.jpg
mounted, everything looks good right? WRONG!
what i failed to realize is that now i cant even put the PSU in because there is no way to get it into the cage that i built for it..., so i had to improvise
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00173.jpg
cut the excess off and made a new bar to attach
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00174.jpg rounded corners
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00178.jpg
since the rivet gun and drill would definitely be unable to fit into the case,
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00175.jpg
i got out my JB weld and decided to chemical weld it on
... now back to the PSU rack
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00191.jpg
so basically what i needed it for was to enlarge the hole that i previously drilled and forgot to enlarge before mounting
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00193.jpg
once i drilled the hole, i was able to mount the hard drive rack
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00195.jpg
did a mock fit of the reservoir and fan combo, fits perfectly, a tight fit, but its absolutely perfect! (don't you love it when things come out as planned?)
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00196.jpg
view from above

i also had to take care of one more thing before mounting more hardware, the key switch had to be mounted:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00185.jpg
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00181.jpg
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00186.jpg
front panel marked up and drilled, then....
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00183.jpg
it doesn't fit yet.. so i got for the larger drill bit, but...
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00182.jpg
my power drill only takes up to 1/2" drill bits!
fortunately my dad has a larger drill somewhere at his store, so i have to wait for him to bring that home for me
anyways, here's the idea
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00184.jpg
it will be mounted above the power and reset switches and will be used to arm/disarm the power switch.

anyways, on to more hardware moutning:

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00198.jpg
i proceeded to mount the other hardware before continuing on to the next phase of the project
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00199.jpg
clearance between the radiator and PSU is plenty to maintain use of the modular cables

on to the planning for the next phase: Modular motherboard tray

again, this tray has to be stylish, functional and must allow me to remove it easily even with water cooling

my plan:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00202.jpg
pump and reservoir will be mounted unto the tray and the tubes will be attached to the radiators via:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00208.jpg
these things, they are quick disconnect tube fitting, all you have to do is press that button and water flow stops instantly and allows you to disconnect the tubing from the loop! awesome stuff

the motherboard cover:
it will end up looking something like this:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00204.jpg
that is cardboard version 1.0, i will need to make at least 2 more before i have one perfect for transfer unto Plexiglass
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00207.jpg
here is how the gear will be mounted on the tray (sorry for the dark picture, ill take a better one after my final exams)

some notes about the motherboard cover:
-it will be attached to the removable tray via friction hinges, for easy access to the internals
-it will act as the chassis for all modular cabling, including SATA, power, front panel, etc.

So, here's what im planning to use to detail the various parts of the case:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00211.jpg
its about the size of 3/4 of my thumb:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00212.jpg
now.. that dosnt look like much, but with some lighting (used the white LED built into my scroll saw station)
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00213.jpg
pure eye candy

I took advantage of the good weather and rummaged through my scrap heap and found an unused bar of aluminum angle and i began making the outline of a skeleton. Here are the bars cut to size:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00285.jpg
looking good. BUT i broke the last fine blade on my scroll saw, so the mobo tray is on hold till i can get to the hardware store :(

However, i did manage to get another mod done for the tray, the cross flow back blower. I don't have any in progress shots, but heres the final product

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00277.jpg
back

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00278.jpg
side

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00281.jpg
mounted with 2 screws and 2 nuts

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00279.jpg
other side

it was difficult to attach this since the blower mounts originally looked like this:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00283.jpg

so i filled the gap with a perfectly cut plexi rectangle:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00284.jpg

strangely it was the exact thickness and filled the hole perfectly :D

So now that i did everything i could, i felt that i should go ahead and mock fit everything to make sure clearance issues were solved:

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00287.jpg
first hook up the CPU block (notice the quick disconnect fitting)

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00289.jpg
then the reservoir to that

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00286.jpg
attached the quick disconnects to the radiator

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00291.jpg
everything stuffed in the case and ready for a fill

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00292.jpg
Fluid of choice: Fluid XP in "Phantom Black"

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00298.jpg
Filled and i got the pump running

for a small pump this thing pushed quite a bit of water, heres a video of it running.

mmm fresh saw blades, so lets get a cuttin!

Here is the basic skeleton that i managed to mock up with masking tape:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/Image00002.jpg

closeup of the mounting hinge (plastic friction hinge)
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/Image00003.jpg

heres how its attached to the frame:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/Image00004.jpg

and here is how its attached to the motherboard tray:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/Image00005.jpg

as you can see, its mounted with a lot of screws...
thats all i got for today, next time i update will be when i figure out how to join these together and start cutting and mounting the acrylic plates

Here, I started assembling the frame by cutting 45 degree angles at the ends of the aluminum L bars
note: the easiest way to get a perfect 45 degree angle is to fold a sheet of paper in half diagonally, quick and dirty
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00307.jpg

Heres where it gets a little tricky, there are 2 ways i can secure the aluminum bars together, JB Weld or rivets here is the joint put together by rivets
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00309.jpg
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00310.jpg

I dint like how it doesn't sit flush, so i tried one with JB Weld
I first cut a piece of scrap to bond th 2 pieces
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00312.jpg
Next I glued it to one end of the bar
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00313.jpg
Finally i glued the other end of the bar
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00311.jpg
looks pretty nice, i will probably redo the first joint with the JB Weld

I got more done, but i have yet to take pictures, I will try to get en up before the weekend is up

and here is the update on the sponsor stuff

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00315.jpg

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00322.jpg
these two beauties. all i can say is WOW, these blocks are quality AND they look slick, the Apogee GTX makes me less sad to have to remove my Fuzion from the loop.

93F ~34C outside, not bad, considering yesterday was 108+

So I took advantage of the good weather and got some more work done on the mobo tray here are the progress shots:

First order of business, drill holes in the frame to mount plexi plates:
Pilot HOles first!
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00332.jpg
Then then enlarge the holes!
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00335.jpg

Now i need to cut angles into the rest of the frame pieces:
I got this with my dremel:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00331.jpg
Then I hit the sanding wheel (which i finally figured out how to install on my dremel station:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00323.jpg
then i got this:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00328.jpg
and this:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00325.jpg

the thing eats aluminum like butter and it eats skin like nothing :blah:

Still.. pretty bad ass IMO, nice, sharp, and clean

Now i needed to figure out how to attach 3 L bars together at one corner, I came up with this:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00330.jpg
When its put together it looks something like this:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00329.jpg

I thought it looked pretty good so i went ahead and made more:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00338.jpg

Here are the pieces getting glued:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00339.jpg
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00340.jpg

Now.. time to figure out how im going to mount the frame to the tray, Came up with this:
One screw to hold each side of the frame on this aluminum bar which is attached to the tray via hinges:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00336.jpg

Nice!

OK now its time to do something about the cross flow fan, I wasn't holding up very well so I came up with this:
Aluminum angle bar JB welded to the side of the hole
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00333.jpg
(Oh yea, and i drilled holes in it for the screws)
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00334.jpg

I'm thinking about rounding the top corner of that once i get to fixing up the Crossflow fan.

Well I cant really do anything till the glue dries so i guess this is it for now

Until later!

Hey guys! thanks for showing interest in my project, i really appreciate it!
I got more done in the past few weeks:

I wasn't comfortable with how the X-flow fan was sitting on the back so i decided to fabricate something to help it stay put:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/dsc00344.jpg
piece of acrylic, drilled out and nuts glued in.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/dsc00347.jpg
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/dsc00348.jpg
5-min Epoxy-ed it
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/dsc00345.jpg
I also shortened the other side
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/dsc00342.jpg
now it sits pretty flush :D

I also mounted the new blocks!
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/dsc00352.jpg
mmm Swiftech makes some top notch stuff
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/dsc00350.jpg
8800GTS stripped, i almost forgot that the actual card was so thin!
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/dsc00353.jpg
mmm slimming, thank you Swiftech!

Some things I didnt get a picture of as it is too dark:
-glued some more aluminum together
-started making the plexi plates
-installed a few minor things inside the case, fan grills, vibration dampeners, etc..

THEkorean
09-26-2007, 10:24 PM
Ok.. now for some bad-ish news. I really need to get this LAN party ready in less than 2 weeks so im putting the motherboard cover on the backburner and focusing on finishing the rest of the case first, so heres what i've been working on (sorry my camcorder dosnt have flash so the pictures may be a tad dark, ill replace them once i get a real camera)

So here is the work i HAVE gotten done:

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00355.jpg
got new fittings for the VGA block (koolance swivel, 90 degree fittings)
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00356.jpg
stubby EK fittings for small space between pump and radiator
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00354-1.jpg
a 1'x1' aluminum sheet

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00362.jpg
fitted new loop
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00363.jpg
filled the loop
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00367.jpg
here it is sitting inside the case

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/Photo69.jpg
trimmed the bottom of the PSU vibration dampener. It was causing clearance problems.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00368.jpg
here it is installed

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00364.jpg
shortened SATA power wires (not sure if you can see, but the power connectors fit perfectly with no excess wire hanging out

Today, i went around driving to different hardware stores to pick up various workshop necessities (masking tape, compass, rulers, drill bits, etc etc.) and began working on the rad grill, check it out:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00370.jpg
cool no?
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00372.jpg
close up on the project logo, it will go on top of the case along with the grill
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00371.jpg
took it to the scrollsaw and did this much before i broke 2 blades, i figured it was time to stop and try again tomorrow when I'm fresh.

Anyways, thats it for now
Until next time!

filed with metal files:
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00379.jpg

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00381.jpg
wasnt cutting it so i went to the dremel sanding drum
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00382.jpg
did the corners with a smaller file
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/thegouskorean/DSC00383.jpg
finished with 150 grit sandpaper

Theres still some more work that needs to be done on the grill, ill finish it tomorrow.

I used Google Sketchup, its a really easy 3d model making program and its free to download.

OK on to some modding after a really really long hiatus:

The motherboard tray cover wasn't really working out, so I opted for plan B, junction boxes that will be mounted to the case and hold all of the modular cables here they are:

To get more space, I removed the front 80mm fans (as suggested by Nix)

Taped up the side so I could drill a hole to rout the front panel wiring through.

Drilled and grommeted

Now to figure out how to join these two junction boxes so they are easier to manage. My solution, Plexiglass spacer:

Here it is "spacing" the junction boxes.

Ok, time to mount the boxes on the fan assembly:

put some screws and nuts through the fan holes

Drilled holes in box and mounted.

Now to cover the unsightly holes in the rest of the assembly since the junction box isn't big enough to cover the fan hole and the upper screw holes:

Everything put together

Mounted in the case

OO very tight fit, but its going to be ok.

Things I want to get done before the next update:
Perfect (straighten, sand, and file) the junction box assembly,
Map LED and wire routing,
and
LEDs installed in the case

There hasn't been an update for so long mate that I thought you had given up, good to see you back. Those boxes look great.
