View Full Version : Rackmount Power Supplies
Ouch!

Does anyone know if the 1U and 2U 'rackmount type' power supplies come with standard ATX plugs, so you can power an ordinary motherboard from them?
I need a small power supply for my latest mod, as an ordinary ATX PSU is too big and the Micro ATX ones are too weedy. I think I need at least 450w
Help me Obi-Wan you're my only hope.......etc etc etc
Thanks...

Generally rack mount supplies are hot swappable, so they don't even have the ATX plugs on them.

Thanks mate.....that puts me in a right problem with the new build.
An ATX supply is just too big, and I need 450watts to be on the safe side.
Damn!

Maybe a shuttle PSU would do the trick?

I don't know if that will power the beast?
I'm gonna have a **** load of LED's and a 8800GTS.....possibly even a LCD screen as well.
Hmmm....
Thanks for your reply.
I'm gonna think hard about this one.

well there must be the same current, connections, etc coming out of the rackmount ones so wouldnt just be a matter of getting it all wired up with the correct plugs?

Can I really run a dual core system with DVD, HDD, 8800GTS, 2Gig of DDR2 memory etc etc etc on a shuttle PSU?

You could always mod a PSU like Deadeye did in this worklog (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10282)

SuperMicro makes 300-1000 watt PS's for a 1u system, and even though it is hot swappable, you can also purchase the Adapter that it slides into. It comes with a 24pin ATX plug an 8 pin and a 4 pin plug as well as 3 or 4 drive plugs (depending on the model). No plugs for a video card though on the 1u ps's, but depending on how many drives you have, you could use an adapter. Since they use the small turbine fans they are a little noisy.

hey man,
I wanted to use a small power supply. Remember you can use one motherboard to turn on two power supplies, if you have room for two small ones.

Or you could alternatively use a switch to power the second:

And lastly, you could mod one to fit your need like I have done, bucko mentioned my worklog, take a look. If you attempt that though, make sure you have adequate cooling. You don't want these things to overheat!
