Basically, my buddy thinks he's a H4x0r because he's using linux and now when you connect it says "trying to connect to *IP*" but with windows, they patched it so you can't use netstat anymore. What's another way to grab an IP??

if he's on linux hes probably using pidgin so maybe you could get the windows version of it.

Pinging netscape.com [205.188.100.47] with 32 bytes of data:
tracert...
nslookup...
(all work in windows command prompt)

Tcpview will show incoming/outgoing connections, and list them next to the process that is using each one.

That would almost be good for if you think something's a virus too... or infected. Speaking of which (not to go too OT), but "svchost" has like six instances on my computer... what's up with that, anyone know?

Go to a command prompt, and type this:
tasklist /svc
It will list the processes running, and show what each svchost is actually doing. :)

Thanks dude. +rep
EDIT: It doesn't recognize "tasklist"... in the run utility or the command prompt.

What OS are you running? I just did it on Vista, and I"m sure it'll work on XP also. In fact, I'll go verify that.. one sec.
Yup, works on XP also.

Huh... lemme try that again, think something could be messing it up if I have a virus or something?
EDIT: Blah, still doesn't want to cooperate... anything else that works like that?

startuplist.exe Works great.. lists all running processes in a text file, and where they are called from on startup.
Here it is (http://www.mac-net.com/576482.page)

Meh, my computer's just retarded... well... anyone know of an easy to use utility that fixes your registry or whatever? I could use something simple as I am a noob at this stuff and want to avoid any chances of me screwing this thing up, lol.

HOLY BALLS! 1274 invalid registry entries... wow. Too bad it only allows 15 to be fixed in the trial. Whaa. Oh well... anything else out there that's free? lol
EDIT: Got Glarysoft Registry Repair 2.4 and that fixed 'em all... thank you Google and me getting of my lazy arse to do something myself. :D

If your friend ever emails you, you'll see the IP in the header. The other suggestions are better though.
Does he think he's going to hack you? Because that's unlikely. Especially if you get him first ;).
Oops, I've said too much.. :D:D
Edit: Woah, progbuddy, you're back! Good to see you again.

tune-up utilities is great IMO, it runs registry stuff every so often in the background and you can do loads of customisation with it such as bootskins, log ons, window skins and you can also disable annoying little popups and stuff like that

FYI: The command "tasklist" is a XP Pro command only, so if you have XP home it won't work. Unless you download takslist from here: http://www.computerhope.com/download/winxp.htm and put it in /documents and settings/*user name*/
Edit: Also this is a useful site regarding "tasklist" http://commandwindows.com/tasklist.htm

Yep. A little bit of an emo/depression stage. Going to a psychiatrist as of tomorrow.

LolEmo or depression?
I feel so sorry for you, those are some of the worst disorders that can effect someone.
Anyway, why not just go over there and kick him in the teeth?
It would be great. then, you don't even need his IP.
Or you could go over to his house and grab his IP that way, through doing something on his computer. The best way is the direct way sometimes.
