If you don't know what it is, here's a link full of information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin

Basically it's a musical instrument that functions through radio waves. There are two antennas. One controls pitch, the other controls volume. As you move your hand towards either one, it disrupts the radio waves, thereby modifying the sound of the instrument.

Here are a few videos demonstrating and explaining the theremin.

I've fancied building one for some time, but I doubt I ever will. There are plenty of circuit diagrams on the net, but if you're going to buy one, I suggest this one (http://www.moogmusic.com/detail.php?main_product_id=14)...

Or if that's too cheap, this baby (http://www.moogmusic.com/detail.php?main_product_id=110)

I've actually found tons of them online. Some are even like just $100.

Be aware that some of the cheaper ones don't have the volume function, and the pitch is derived using a LDR (http://www.technologystudent.com/elec1/ldr1.htm) rather than the traditional method.

Looking at where I am, I should just try to build one myself first. Though I don't know much about ciruitry. Once I start school though, I may take an electrical engineering course, possibly a degree with it. Though what i really want to do is get a degree is computer engineering at MIT.

Here's another example of theremin playing, in The Boxer. It starts at about 2:15

Here's another example of theremin playing, in The Boxer.Nice theremin playing, but that loooks like the most boring concert in the world. Ever. http://bestsmileys.com/yawning/2.gif

"you don't jump when you go to shows... must be emo".

All those emo adults at that simon/garfunkle concert.

The best use of one that I ever saw was in an episode of I am Weasel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Weasel).

Weasel and Baboon were doing a sort of duelling banjos, weasel on harp, baboon on theremin. The tune was the alphabet song, with the audience singing along. Eventually the harmonic vibrations caused by the theremin cracked the earth in two.

Most surreal, I wish I could find it on youtube, but I can't.

I can't see the video's because i am at school at the moment, but i have seen these on tv a while ago. I always thought they were awsome but never realised you can purchase/build one for as cheap as some of you guys have mentioned.

Definitly one of the coolest intruments i have ever come across. I'm not musicly inclined though, otherwise i would try to get my hands on one.

Just found this...

Edit: not cheap though... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150199520279

That must be theremin modding, building a theremin into something else. Cool.
