Please take a look at the process and time needed to finish this project

First off, im new to the forums so hello to everyone.

Ok, I recently stumbled upon an old army cooler that made me think doing a battlefield case would be rather cool. My only problem is I cant figure out how to implament battlefield in the case. Im going to put in military switches, convert the front and back into hinged doors and, install sheetmetal for a flat surface for the 6 inch lcd screen, control panel. The lower part of the front will be left for a fan and a hidden cdrom drive. All the hardware is pretty much figured out I just need some cool features for the theme. Bullet holes seem to be along the lines but that just isnt enough for another person to say "hey that case is a battlefield theme." There is a lid to this thing and it has al lbeen gutted. My mind just isnt as creative as i had hoped with this project and any help would be greatly appreciated.
ps- this case is ment for lan so durability is a must.

DIMENSIONS: 19 3/4in. long, 9 3/8in. wide, 13 1/8in. high

this is how I plan on setting up the harware and the overal look of the case. I just need some advice on some ways to make this a battlefield theme. Also do you think it is a bad idea to have a cd-rom drive vertical? If so I would apreciate any suggestions about the placement.

Hey thanx for the reply. I didnt think putting in a vertical drive would be a good idea (thanx for reasurring me) so i am going to make a flip down panel on the very bottom of the front that hides the drive. I cant install it in under the front door because i just dont have enough room inside the case. It will hit the ram and most likely not help coolin, if you know what i mean. This is going to be an air cooled system because it will be for strictley lan use. Ill probably make the front door a little shorter sence i really dont need much room for a 6in. lcd and some switches. That will also alllw me to use a 120 mm in the front like I had hoped. Ill have to play with sketchup a little more to be sure. Oh the frame inside of the case is going to be removable, via the top, so working or upgrading this thing wont be such a pain. This frame will hopefully house a full atx motherboard and powersupply as well as the hardrives.

Thanx agin for your replies and more are welcome (hint hint)

I think I may do something like this. What do u think? (thanks for the front door idea). It will be placed all the way to the left to stay away from the motherboard and give room for some usb ports.

Yes that big white box on the bottom is the powersupply, I couldnt find any other place taht it will fit and still give me a rear case fan and not hit the cpu fan or be right over top of it. its okl on the bottom I guess?? Atleast it wont be the only thing you see from the top window!!

This case is my first experience with sketchup but i have used CAD a bunch of times.

I started cutting out the plates that go behind the front a rear doors. It takes forever with a dremel. I need to find a jig-saw.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0042.jpg

This is the basic idea for the back of the case. The tabs will be bent and the plate will be rivetted to the case. (helps with the militay/battlefield theme.) I figured I would start on the back to learn the best way to do the front.

SHould I use the same color for the case or go with a desert camo? Desert camo represents BF2 more then a plain olive green. What do u think? Although, the olive green that it was painted with was pretty cool. Maybe I should have left the paint on there???? It was some strong stuff, took me almost 3 quarts of paint stripper and way to many hours of work.

Im still having a mental block trying to think up some ORIGINAL ideas to pull off the Battlefield look. I figure I will throw on some rust and keep all of the dings in the case to help it along. I could use any suggestions if you have some. (normally I am not this questioning/needing ideas from others I just cant figure this one out.)

Thanks again for the replies, it makes the forums worth coming back too.

-Do you think this should go under the worklog threads? I seem to be updating my mod for then asking questions lol!

A stealthed cd rom drive would be cool but the only proble is the area where i would have to stealth. It is quite curved and has a few other obsticles like the motherboard. I only have a 1 3/4 inch gap between the cdrom drive and the side panel. That means I have to fit the motherboard tray and the motherboard in that gap with some room to spare for the power and led connections.

Heres some pics

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0057.jpg

Do you think I have enough room for all of that?

Heres a pic of the back plate that is still onder constuction. I also have to add the back door on.

Just to recap on what has been done:
-Pain..,, I mean paint removed (alot of work i might add):dead:
-The rear and front doors cut and remounted.
- ahh.. I guess thats it lol.

Here are the pics Crimson. lol

These are of my design I did in sketchup almost 6 months ago. It has a removable frame from the back(almost like a removable MB tray but everything comes out except the power and accessory buttons, front fan, and DVD ROM.

Ill take some pics of the actual case later and try to post them to show my progress. Thanx for viewing

Here are the pics as promissed. I had to borrow a camera, my olo one was acting up. Oh well.

The case looks very scratched up but it is just the flash. I also want to note that the crome molding will be sanded and painted. Its not on atached well either, just a little glue, but It will get the royal treatment on the final attachment. It will also follow the edges of the case more evenly.

Thanks agiain

Well I plan on using the top as an access to the parts on the inside. I hope to have the motherboard tray removable by only a couple screws but we well see:rolleyes: .

As for the rear vents for the PSU and FAN... Im not sure lol. I did plan on drilling a few holes in the rear door and the bottom and top of the door is open to allow for exhaust. Besides that Im not sure. Any suggestions would be cool.

Thanx for the comments, I love the look of the BIG rivets, almost tank like in person. The molding will be sanded and painted the color of the case. I will probably flatten it a little more so its not quite as rounded, and it will deffinetly follow the lines of the case( I like crisp edges.)

Well it looks like monday will be the day to start this agin. I hope to build most of the inner frame then.

Thanx again, Dan The Geek

Oh almost forgot, I did a little more tweaking with my sketchup and decided a full atx MB is a must. This also shows how all the doors should work when finished.

Well I got a bit bored a few minutes ago and decided to see if I could make a ruff design of what I hope for in the final paint job.

This is what I came up with. Used a bit of filtering and airbrush with gimp
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/100_1099-1.jpg

Im not sure how i will get the effect:think: .

Well jopefully tomorrow ill stop waisting time with pictures and start on the real thing ;) . Oh well..

Any comments welcome.

I think this mod has taken a turn. I see it no longer as a battlefield 2 mod, but rather a military theme. I just dont see it working out well as a BF2 theme unless I paint it desert camo and throw on some hidden elements from the game (tank numers, etc.) oh well.. Maybe ill stick to the plan on my future Battlefield 2142 mod (hint .hint..;) ):D

I think I can use a few ideas from this. It looks cool.. lol

Well I have a few more toys for this mod.

The first one is a pair of speakers that ive had for ages. They work great and they are light duty so I should have no problem running them off of a PSU. The speakers are only 2 inches in diameter and they should fit nicely in the lid of the case. After-all, what good is BF2 without some sound.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0003.jpg

The second one I made. Its a switch box that I can turn on and off 4 devices that use molex connectors. Its not done, I need to tighten the switches and line everything up but it works great

WARNING: PICS LOOK LIKE CRAP. I was in my dark basement and my camera would blow-out the image with flash and I didn't have a good spot light I could use.

I have some pics of some progress I have made. Not much but all for the better.

I scraped the molding idea because it looked like crap. Instead, The doors will be completely flush and even to the case. Im using bondo to make everything smooth and even.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0024.jpg

I also decided to use some bondo to fill in the rounded areas on the back. This was just to give me a straight line.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0021.jpg

I also made a new front panel.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0018.jpg

Everything needs to grinded a bit, sanded, and bododed to get those perfect edges:) . I will fill in the open areas around the rounded parts with bondo as well.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0016.jpg

Ill also be cutting a new door from anther cooler I have.

I received some fan grills from xoxide.com today. Well atleast two od the frills will be for fans:) .

These are the basic plain grills I thought would look good on the case. There are twoo of each size (120mm and 60mm)

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0028.jpg

Whats 60mm grills for, you ask? Well I needed matching grills for the speakers and they almost fit perfectly.8)

Almost forgot. I will also be making a power remote for this case but I am unsure of how it will be done. If you have any insight please post comments on that thread (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7534), not in this work log.

This is the design for the remote once finished, the c4 detonator, hopefully.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/Image2-1.jpg

danthegeek
04-17-2007, 11:21 PM
I started constructing my remote power switch that will look like the C4 detonator on Battlefiled 2.

I went to my local Home Depot and picked up this wireless and battery operated doorbell. Its made by Chime Design, model# WD-1120, and was only $10 U.S.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0043.jpg

I first ripped the entire thing apart.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0033.jpg

Secondly I wired the 5V relay I bought at radio shack to the receiver. I used solder and hot glue to insulate.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0037.jpg

I then glued the receiver into a small project box I also picked-up at Radio Shack.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0039.jpg

I wired the receiver to my pc using this diagram. No final pics because I was simply testing to make sure it works.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DIAGRAM.gif

With a new remote power switch, I have to make this project box look like the detonator from BF2.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0040.jpg

I plan on completing this box tomorrow; a little cutting and gluing should do the trick.

Comeback tomorrow to see the final results on the detonator.

WARNING To 56K

Ok I started my detonator today and actually finished but, it doesn't look like the one off of BF2. Its close but definatly not the same but I still like it. The best part is it only cost me about $20 to make in total.:D

Anyways some pics.

EDIT - I took a project box and wrapped it in foam insulator for pipes to give it a rubber feel.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0044.jpg

I then started wraping the thing in some cloth I bought a wal-mart. it was cheap ($1 a yard).

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0045.jpg

I also decided to make an antenna for it using cloths hanger, a bic pen, and hot glue. No it is not functional, purely for looks.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0047.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0049-1.jpg

I then cut out the needed holes in the metal plate. One hole for the on/off, one for the led, and the other for an off switch to save the batteries:) .

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0051.jpg

I then mounted the buttons and underside for the switch.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0052.jpg

Ok, Finished. 8) I used some paint to give it a weird look but didn't work to good on the sticker. Paint seemed to dry before getting to it. Heres some final pics, but I still need to clear coat the top. I did paint over the Led because I burnt it out, ill stop at radio shack tomorrow and get another one.

I didnt get anything done today but i do have some pics as promised

This is the front view of the case. I used a little bondo to make the edges nice and straight. I will also be making a new door for this asap. I hope it turns out!

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0071.jpg

I did a little modding to the to the remote AGAIN. I needed some stripes so a little masking tape and a razer blade helped me out with this. Note it is all done freehand, not bad for my first time.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0073.jpg

A night shot of the working led on the remote, Im not sure why i never posted any pics of this before.

Well I did some more work on my case today. I made the motherboard tray, well actually modified an existing one. It was take out of a cheapo $10 case:D . Since the tray and rear panel were in seperate pieces I riveted them together.

In this pic you can see the two pieces together. I also painted the thing to give a nice clean finish even though it will probably never be seen.:smoker:

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0078.jpg

In this pic you can see the two pieces of angled aluminum that was attached to the back of the MB tray. This is for structural support as well were the screws will hold the tray to the case.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0079.jpg

And a quick preview of how this all fits in the case. Note that i am not dealing with much room left  .

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0077.jpg

I also tried to make the front door for the case but that didnt go so well. I dont have any pics of it because I got extremely frustrated with it, beat it with a hammer, and threw it in the woods.:hurt:

Well I did a little bit of work on the case today. I did have to stop when the drill slipped and I cut my finger to the bone. But anyways some pics are what you guys want so here you go.

I mounted some 90 degree angled aluminum on the inner part of the case for some support and for the top panel to have a place to mount to.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0083.jpg

Heres an overall picture of the case so far.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0081-1.jpg

On the front panel you can see were I cracked the bondo from moving the face plate back. It wasnt straight enough and a little more bondo will have it looking pretty again.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0084.jpg

I bet you cant guess how many rivets are in this case so far.

The answer is : 42 and im not done yet. :dead: . I still have to rivet the hinges, latches, MB tray, hard drive cage, DVD rom cage, etc. Uhh

Anyway, I took the idea you guys thew in into consideration. But instead of having just the one class I came up with this.

This panel will display the overall kills and deaths for all of the classes in my account. I will just have to find an LCD and someone who can program very well. If not Ill just paint the current stats when the case is almost finished.

Im ok now that I took some good pain killer. It happened when I was drilling out a rivet on a 90 degree steel bracket. I didnt have enough room for pliers so I used my hand :dead: . I didnt have my hand over the rivet, just next to it but, the drill poped through the hole because I was using to much pressure and I hit My hand at full speed. Thats an 18 volt Dewalt as fast as it will spin. So I hit my middle finger and I started oozing blood. Dumb me, I wiped it off on my pants and wrapped it in masking tape so i could keep working. After about an hour the tape was soaked a dripping and I had blood everywhere. So I got some peroxide and cleaned it out. Thats when i noticed I went to the bone, I could see my insides, and I think I cut the tendon because I cant bend it well. Oh well, just anther story. 8)

I re-cut the angled aluminum for the top plate support. The edges almost line-up but its good enoughh for government work 8) .

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0087.jpg

I also made the top plate for the case. That was probably the easiest part of all so far. My measurements were nearly dead on and I didn't screw up with the dremel once. :) I still have to trim the back plate to be flush with the top and I also have to drill the holes for the screws to secure the top.

I also took a pic with the door next to the case so you can get the idea of what it will look like.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0090.jpg

I also bought a new toy today. I got the cut-off wheels EZ-Lock kit. Let me tell you, I will never go back to the old discs. Not only does it take 2 seconds to put on a new wheel, but they last alot longer as well. Im talking 3-4 times loger.

Well thanks for looking at my mod, I plan on attaching the front and raer doors tomorrow so dont stray far ;) .

Well I have some good news, Im done the back panel.

I cut out the holes using my dremel and then threw on some red primer and flat black.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0093.jpg

I then cut out the holes for all of the fan and Power Supply. (Tip: dont paint then drill holes, just creates more work :) ) Now I have to hit it with another cote of paint and some sandpaper.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0096.jpg

Heres a pic with the top on and I still need to drill holes and mount this.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0097.jpg

I decided to throw in some goodies so you can get the idea of how this is going together.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0104.jpg

I also put some-more bondo on the front panel, I need to hit it with some sandpaper and the dremel.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0102.jpg

I picked-up some hinges for the doors today. I think they are for gates so they should holdup well and they also seem to hollow the lines of the case.

Thanks for viewing and comments welcome, good or bad :)

Thanks for the comments everyone. I got a little bit of work done yesterday but I have to go to work soon so Ill post an update tonight or tomorrows.

Ookazoo- The rivets are just the biggest pop-rivets I could find at my local hardware store. Im not sure as the size because I have sense thrown away the packaging but When I get somemore Ill let you know. With sketchup..., well I would say Im that good but just practice with it. The hardest thing for me is the switch from AUTOCAD. Sketchup seems to be a little more deifficult at making it do what you want and to make everything semitransparent click "View", "face style", then "X-ray." under the menu bar.

Thanks again everyone.

-danthegeek

Edit-

Well I decided to throw in an update anyways :)

I worked on cutting out the design for the top plate. Behind the star and 4 rectangular holes will be frosted plexi, either red or white, but im not sure yet.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0106.jpg

I didnt finish cutting the holes because I got distracted. It turns out the star can be used as a weapon. Ninja Star TIME. (yes I did actually throw it from about 10 feet away.)

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0108.jpg

I also came up with this design for the HD cage.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/hdcage.jpg

I got the aluminum bent for the supports and ley me just say, bending 1/8 inch thick aluminum is not easy task by hand. I had to do both at the same time so I would get the bends right.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0105.jpg

I still have to cut out the angled pieces for the bottom and the drill holes for the mounting screws for the HDs and the case.

thanks again.

Well another Update.

I finished the cut out of the top plate. The only thing is I screwed up but no worries. I think I will use thin red plexi for the stripes that go trough the center of the rectangles. It should look good, maybe enven better  .

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/DSCF0113.jpg

I also finished the HD cage. I decided to go with 2 instead of 3 sense thats all I will need for a raid 0.

And some paint.

Well everyone, modding is on hold for a few days. I hurt my back earlier today and Im in bed now, all I did was bend down and BOOM. Shooting pains, I fell to the floor and couldnt move or breath and my father didnt know what was wrong, as I couldnt talk. I laid there, my father had to pick me up and put me on the couch. Yes I did cry, first time in a few years, but that was by far the worst pain I have every experienced in my life. Im on some godly (yes, godly, they are that good) pain killers now so I can move around.

Anyways I should get back to this in a few days

-danthegeek.

EDIT-

I almost forgot to tell everyone about my new toys. Today my dad went to a military show and picked me up a couple of ammo boxes. I dont have a pic of the big one as its not cleaned-up yet but, its about twice as tall as this one.

Thus should make for a cool HTPC.

Well I dont know if I will make it or not but I will give it a hell of a try.

I have to cut a new front door and get another lid but thankfully I have a donor for the parts.

Things Left to do:

-mount HD cage
-mount lid, front door, rear door.
-Install latches and hinges
-install speakers in the lid
-mount front switch box and key start
-finish remote start
-mount cd rom drive
-install handles
-fill holes in the sides of the body
-cut front fan hole
-Finish bondo work
-paint, paint, paint, and paint.

Its a 2 1/2 hour drive. Its a little far just to show a work in progress. When is the next show around the baltimore and philly area?

EDIT- What do you guys think about bullet holes? Should I thow a couple in or leave it the way it is. I would cover the holes in plaxi and have the red lights shine through.

I continued work today on the receiver for the remote start.

I started by taking some 3 pin connectors from old fans and wiring them to the receiver. I did this so I can easily disconnect it from the power and motherboard.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0601.jpg
I then started to sand, primer, and paint the receiver box and the front cover of the switch box.

Today i only had time to cut the front hole for the 120mm front fan.

I traced an outline and made my ruff cut first
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/Picture004-1.jpg
I then cleaned it up with the dremel, sandpaper, and the marked the spots to drill the holes for the screws.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/Picture005-1.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/Picture006.jpg
I ended by primer and painting the edges of my cut and the front fan grill. I havent decided if I will keep it green or paint it black. The green seems to blend in and make it seem like it is built in.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/Picture007.jpg

Not much done but at least this gives an idea of what I have been doing.

I painted the top panel. The white area is actually paper but It gives you an idea of what the frosted plexi wil look like. I did a little bit of aging to the top and I will continue it on the rest of the case.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0641.jpg

Anyways, I now have my front bezel cut out.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0656.jpg
I then bent it at a 90 degree angle as best i could with a Rubber mallet and some angled aluminum.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0660.jpg
I laid out the front(actual size) and I will start cutting the holes and brackets for the stuff tomorrow. I have to make metal plates that everything fits into so i can remove stuff by taking out screws. Should look good.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0657.jpg
Oh, and this is what I will use to attach the cd rom to the front. I just have to cut it along the bottom tape marks and then support it with something.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0664.jpg

EDIT- On a side note, If anyone is wondering why I went with green for the color instead of beige, well it was beige. It made it look like an old office computer. So, I went with green to give it more "flare."

OK time for an UPDATE!!!

I needed something to fix the unneeded holes in the side of the case. So, I went to Autozone and bought some "Quick Steel." So I used this and it worked great. Its so strong, I dont have to worry about the holes anymore. If I need to drill a smaller hole in the same spot I can.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0683.jpg
Right Side holes fixed and primed.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0675.jpg
Left Side holes fixed and primed.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0673.jpg
For the front I used the "Quick steel" again to attach the front panel and primed. Trust me, it isnt coming off. I tested it with other scrap pieces and a hammer. I destroyed the steel before it even started to crack. I just need to fill in the gaps a bit and sand the primer smooth.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0674.jpg
While the primer was drying, I cut the bracket for the CD-ROM drive. Easy enough
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0677.jpg
I went ahead and marked to screw holes for the top cover.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0679.jpg
The I used a small drill bit (forget the size) and made a hole for the sheet metal screws.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0678.jpg
The finished product. If you notice the top left screw has a brocken head. Nothing some vice-grips cant fix.:) .
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0680.jpg
Once the primer was dry I sanded the entire case and primed it. A little smoother and I will need this when I paint it and blacken in some areas like I did for the top cover.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0681.jpg
Once that was dry I took some black paint and painted the underside of top cover and the case. Ill let them dry over night and start work again tomorrow.

OH I finished the back door.

I started by evening up the door to the case as much as possible. Its close enough. I also had to cut off two rivet heads on the left side of the case so i could attach the hinges.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0702.jpg
After they were cut, I taped everything up to mark the holes and then drilled.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0704.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0705.jpg
Before I attached the door, I wanted to cut a small hole in the bottom for air ventilation. So, I marked it off and then cut it with the handy dremel. I intend to put some mesh in the hole as well.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0706.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0707.jpg
After that, I attached the door with the hinges.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0711.jpg
I then marked the holes for the latches and attached them as well.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0713.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0715.jpg
I then sanded and threw on some primer to protect the metal.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0716.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0720.jpg
I hope to start the front tomorrow but that will be a challenge. I have to cut a piece out of another case to create a door for this one. O just hope I dont screw-up the measurements.;)

Thanx for looking,

HAHA. Ill have my girlfriend take a pic of me tomorrow. Actually, I dont have a pic of me.

Anyways, thank you for your complements

Ok, a small update for everyone.

I got the front door cut out and mounted, I didnt take any pic of the process because it was just like the rear door just much more complicated. Trying to take a piece of metal out of another case and make it match this was quite a task. I took about 7 hours total until i was happy with it enough to mount it. I also had to fill in a bunch of holes because it was severly corroded.

PICS

Now that the site is back up, time for an update.

I cut out the piece for the underside of the lid. It tuned out good enough, it even snaps right in.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0786.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0787.jpg
Then I made the bracket for the speakers but, I decided not to go with a storage bay yet. I really like the idea of the gauges and I dont want to mod myself into a corner.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0788.jpg
Then the camera died so there are no pics of me attaching the metal plate, hinges, cutting, blah blah. I just couldnt wait for the camera to charge

This is where I stand so far, everything primed and some areas painted black (inside of doors, inside case, etc.)

I also need a way to latch the lid but i dont want to go with the same latches as the doors. And I dont want them to look out of place either. Hummm, I may not go with latches sense gravity holds it down and the hinges are pretty stiff.

I will finish the front panel tomorrow and start painting. I hope to be done by the weekend so dont stray to far.

thanks again

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0798.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0799.jpg
Then I decided to mount the MB tray into the case. I used some small rivets and some paint to finish it off
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0812.jpg

I painted the underside of the frosted plexi white. I dont want the red lights turning it pink and this was the best way I found.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0800.jpg
Tomorrow I will cut out this piece and cut a hole in the front for the switches. This goes to the right of the switch box as shown in the previous design.

I cut out the panel for the power/reset switches and such. I used the switch box panel as a template so they match (the one I cut out is the smaller one).

I got a little bit more work done today on the pc.

I started by making a support for the lid so it wont snap the other doors of when you open it. It was putting a lot of pressure on the doors so I got some small cable and put some ends on it.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0827.jpg
Then I mounted it to the lid and back panel using some rivets. It may not look great but this was the best and simplest way I could find to do this. Remember, it has to function too.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0828.jpg
Then I mounted the rear hinge.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0831.jpg
I also mounted the hard drive cage using some drill screws. Its easy to detach it as long as you have the front overhanging a table or something.

Some black paint. I know you may think theres a lot of overspray but I will mask off the areas I want to stay black and the green will cover up the rest.

Tomorrow some more paint and some finishing touches. I should have it finished in a day or two, as long as I am happy with the paint. The real time killer is waiting 4 hours for paint to dry before i can touch it.

OH, some hardware.

Old AMD 3700 (free from my shelf) and motherboard. Also a new sata DVD writer from newegg ($30) and a free 160 gig seagate HD. Tomorrow the 8600gt, 1 gig ram, and 400 watt Ps whould be here from newegg.

Ok ANOTHER UPDATE.

something you may be interested in, paint. Yes that was my goal for today and I accomplished it, but dont let me get ahead of myself

I started by taping off the areas I wanted to stay black and threw on some primer after sanding.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0845.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0846.jpg
Then I put on 5 layers of green so I would get a good even coat.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0848.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0847.jpg
Well that doesent look right, too new. SO I threw on some black for the darkening and aging effect.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0849.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0853.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0854.jpg
Then once the paint wasnt to tacky, I took off the paper and tape.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0855.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0856.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0857.jpg
I think the black handles and black front work well with the color.

Anyways, i will let this dry a few more hours and then start assembly if I can. I dont want to mess-up the paint with finger prints and huge scratches. I dont plan on sanding any of it down to make it look more worn because I want to protect the metal.

More pics in better lighting. I also finished the front bezel. I dont know if I will paint the screws or not. The crome look gives it some contrast.

We want more pics.

Ok, more pics.

I made some stickers for the front and also took some sandpaper to the front to give it a used look. Also some lights :D. Im still waiting on my red cold cathodes.

Thanks for all the comments, but Im not dont yet. I still need to wire and mount the speakers, make a sticker for under the lid, get my lights, finish painting grills and bolts on the front, install the Motherboard (I dont have any stand offs for the tray) and the rest of the hardware.

Thank you all for your comments and compliments. I would have never gotten this far without the support from all of you.

Now, this is the part of the worklog when I start lecturing all of.

j/k , but seriously, I can never say enough to always plan every aspect of a mod. That is what makes or brakes a build.

I show you why. I knew that everything was going to fit tightly into the case and I am extremely glad I measured twice.:D

While installing the video card I knew it was going to be close to the power supply, but not this close. The video card has 1 mm. between it and the power supply. Yes 1mm, maybe less. lol but it is not touching it. Heat will not be an issue though because the power supply has a 120mm fan pulling air past the card.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0889.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0888.jpg
Also the memory has about 4mm between it and the DVD-rom. You can also see the 24pin connector was a close call as well because of the dvd-rom cage.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0890.jpg
Atleast it all fits. Now I have to see if I can get the usb working. for some reason it will not install anything properly or recognize it and I dont know if it the motherboard or windows. I may do another clean install and see what I come up with. Any ideas?

Thanks again

Well I have the hardware and software part of this mod done. The only thing left is a lot of wire management. I still have to take everything out of the case again so I can run my speaker wire neatly (dont want bits of metal in the new goods). All I need to do to finish the case is get the red and white lights and I will be done.

Question, I cant figure out how to get the usb working. Ive tried reinstalling windows, bios update, new drivers, and I still get "unrecognized device" on everything I try (mouse, keyboard, camera, flash drive, etc.). My ethernet slows down after a few minutes as well. I guess I will gave to get a usb pci card and try it out or get another MB.

Besides that, it runs games great (oblivion @ 1400 * 900 Med all day long with no lag).

Ok, I got bored and decided to make a small slide show of the mod so far. I like it but it is only a minute long and I plan on doing a hole slide show with progress and finished video. This is kind of like a teaser.

enjoy.

EDIT- I changed it a bit

does the key do anything or is it purely appearance?
also what does the text say on those bricks o.o

The key arms the power switch so you can turn the system on. What do you mean by "bricks." Do you mean the label, if so then:

Ok, I got a bit of work done.

I finished wiring the speakers and they work great. I ran the wire to the back and into the lid from the bottom so they are hidden when you shut it. They are nice and loud to. I will try to get a video of it once I remake that bracket that holds the speakers.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0896.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0897.jpg
I also put in a speaker input in an expansion slot so you can plug in you ipod, cd player, pc, whatever into the speakers.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0898.jpg
I added the mesh to the rear panel. I dont see how it will do any good sense the door has to be open to run the pc. I may make a small opening for the wires later.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0901.jpg
I made a template and added a U.S. emblem in the rear door. I added a little over-spray to make it look more realistic.

I was wondering what your opinions on adding some handles onto the front was? I like the looks of them and that is all they would be there for. Do you think Im trying to add to much? Anyways, Id love to get some opinions to help my decision sense I cant decide.

Im not sure I want to add a bunch of stuff to the sides. I think it would look weired to have a bunch of switches and gauges on the outside when the case was designed to conceal things such as that (meaning the doors). I do have a small suprise for the outside, its more of a detachable add-on, but you will have to wait and see:D.

I got a little bit of work done today. The first thing I did was add a support for the cover. This also help support the front bezel as well.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0911.jpg
I officially finished the speakers by adding the hardware to hold them in.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0920.jpg
Im still on the fence about the handles. I know they serve no real purpose but this build is about looks, not just function. I think they look good but I dont know. Heres a few more picks with a black and silver handle. Any input?

I also added a bit ore aging to the front to give it a more used look in places that would be touched a lot. Thats why there are dark and light spots in the above pictures, although they do not show it very well.

thanks again for the suggestions and compliments.

Thanks for the input everyone it realy did help in my decisions.

I did a little bit of work today. I did mount the handles and they turned out pretty good. I went with a weathered silver look. I did it by painting them black then sanding off almost all f the paint. I did this to give it a pitted and worn look and the pictures do them no justice. I like the contrast they created with the front panel. I may mist them with some black to make them look dirtier.

They are very strong to since I have reinforced the front panel. i can actually lift the case by them. I hope to my leds for the star and my red cold cathodes in a few days to finish this off,... for now lol.

I would love to have an LCD for the lid and I could just run it off of the second output on the video card. I would probably use it for music and a temp display. I just dont want to spend anymore of his money, he just bought me the video card, ram and power supply ($200 u.s.) a week ago. The screen would be another $100 ($200 for a touch screen). I dont think I can justify him spending that much money for something that is more or less a "second" system of mine. I may get one from my pocket when I get some more money (im broke lol).

AS for the door, it fits with millimeters to spare :).

I was thinking I could do something like this:

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/LIDCONFIG800x600.jpg

Then I could have the LCD (the top right) show temps of my hardware and the gauges show the voltages coming out of the power supply (12, 5, 3.3 volt).

All of this probably wont happen soon sense the contest at micro center is this weekend and I need to get everything I have now working.

EDIT- the lcd would be from a ps1 because they are cheap.

Love the design for the LCD/Gauges. Would be nice to see some more 'missile' style toggel switches in there too.

Overall though looking great, the handles came out really nice aswel!

Id like to use some of those gauges but I only have about 1.5 cm between the lid and the cover with the star. Id probably have to use some rocker switches on there.

I have one major flaw in my plan for the gauges though. The only ones I can find that would work are 2.5 inches in depth. I only have 1.25 inches at the most in depth so I will have to come-up with something different.

thank for the compliments

The meter for the Hd activity sounds great. Ill have to do some more research and see what I can find with a depth small enough.

A small update.

I wanted to add a usb port to the front of the case but I didnt want to have it behind the door. This is so I could close the door if I had a mouse and keyboard hooked-up to it. I chose my spot on the case and this is where it is.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0986.jpg
Is not the best looking spot but because of all of the stuff inside I was limited to placement. It was either here or at the very top in the middle (would have had to cut out the U.S. stamped area.). So, I cut out my hole.
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/danthegeek/IMG_0991.jpg
Threw on some paint and called it finished. I may try to blend the colors better but Im not really that worried about it.
