well, theres something I didn't know. Cool to know if i need AA and only have a 6volt around i will be able to use whatever i wanted to use!
wow. I'm strapped for cash right now so this might actually come in handy.

Wow... is that nuts or what? That'll be good to have in mind for when all I have are those things and no AAs... or do I?

The idea is that if you need AA's, just buy a lantern battery instead of buying a 6 pack or w/e they come in. :P

I haven't looked at the price of those 6volts at the store recently, because they are hot hardware deals I must assume they are much cheaper than the AA.
Now that I think about it, the last time I bought one I was in 6th grade, soooo that was...like 9 years ago. But i think one was like $5.95 or something, so I guess that would be a great deal. A 4pack is like $5 or something rediculous.

that's insane!!!!
Now I have to wonder about the quality of the AA's that you pull out. Anyone here tried this? How do they compare to good brand name AA's?

yea, woohoo! next time I am so gonna just buy a 6v battery from walmart. instead of getting a bunch of AA's.

Wow, that is a Hot Hardware Deal. That is like the definition of one. Thats just cool, f%#* buying $5 AA packs.

calm me paranoid but before i throw these AA on my wireless mouse i would check the voltage first... :D

For those that think they are all full of AA batteries, you may be disappointed...
This was a flat 6V I hadn't thrown out yet and I thought I'd pull it apart because I was sure the last time I did that years ago there wasn't AA batteries in there.
Sure enough, this is what I found:

It might depend on the brand. Just look at the container they're in and that should tell you what's in it. Those plastic cases seem to be form fitting as it holds them in place better, or it just gets shaped that way naturally, who knows. But yeah, check out the container first.

if you look at the container before you buy it the ones with AAs would have smaller radius corners (i'd presume so anyways, havent actually checked!)

Haha, looks like you had a struggle with that beast bucko. By any chance do you still have the wrapper so we can write that one off of the list of brands?

Bucko u beat me to it.
I pulled apart an Eveready Super Heavy Duty, 6v and it had 8 of them batteries bucko found in them. So cross eveready off the list.
Although they are cool batteries, big 1.5v's when i took them out, my brother thought it was a bomb pack on my desk lol. But there back in the plastic case now.

Has anyone tried that other battery trick that was floating around? That in a AA batteries there are actually watch batteries? I have the link but can't find the video anymore.
I pretty much shows someone opening up a battery aa and it having around 7 watch batteries.

I've done a battery hack before. I took my old Sizzlers cars (anyone beside me remember these) and I looked at the rechargeable battery on the inside. I took the numbers from it and did a search online. Lo and behold, a cheap $4 battery for a wireless phone contained three. I ordered several and cut them up and now my Sizzlers work again.
I think that it really depends on the brand and it looks like Energizer does a lot of this. Good luck and happy hunting.

i'm not sure i want to venture to much more into the batteries but does anyone think in the 4 big batteries there maybe 8 D sized batteries?
Wasabisam
09-30-2007, 09:41 AM
I wouldn't open up the 4 big batteries, i think they have acid in em, not other batteries, I believe this because the outside case is metal, When the batteries we have opened is plastic, Why would u case other batteries in metal, unless it was acid. Because the acid in batteries erodes plastic. Just what im thinking.

Bateries work by eroding the metal, the anode and the cathode are made of different metals and one erodes quicker than the other producing a flow of electrons that is electricity. well thats the basic principle anyways
Spawn-Inc

yup, thats how the classic lemon or potato light/clock works. copper and zinc plates into the acid which helps transfer the electrons.

The batteries I took apart for my Sizzlers were encased in metal. I'm not sure of the benefit of having them in metal as opposed to plastic, but I am saying that there may be D size batteries in there. I wouldn't try it myself though. Battery acid is nasty stuff.

I think those crazy thick plastic labels are there just to show the name of the company that made 'em and also to keep people from messing with the batteries.

Just if u are opening a battery watch out, because i read somewhere that if u put to much pressure on them and puncher them, they can explode, Battery bomb type thing, But thats another story. So if u are opening the metal, Be careful or take loads of pictures :D either way PICTURES

Good point. If you throw batteries in a fire, it sounds like a shotgun going off when they explode.
Wasabisam

If you threw a battery in fire, when it explodes and opens up, wouldn't acid spit everywhere, and isn't that acid deadly, and wouldn't that acid be on fire, therefore making it a big hazard for more fires to start?

My dad lived out in the country. Whenever they'd be burning trash or something he'd toss batteries in and get behind a door just to listen to the explosions. It probably was a stupid thing to do, but they did lots of stupid and unsafe things back in the old days.

Thats amazing. I think on the same site they also say that AA batteries have smaller batteries inside, for even smaller electronics lol. 4-5 internally. But that, is amazing. 32 batteries inside, just, amazing. Goes to show how cheap those actually are to make (and that by using these hacks you can save hundreds, and use it for new computer parts or otherwise :P.

a little bit more on this battery thing,http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/battery5.htm
They pulled a 9v battery apart and they found 6 1.5v battery's inside that.
Anyone wanna do that and take some photos?
I dont have a 9v battery lieing around.

They pulled a 9v battery apart and they found 6 1.5v battery's inside that. That's because you need six cells to produce 9V. A cell is typically 1.5V (with some exceptions, notably lead-acid which are 2V and lithium, which are 3V), so everything else is a multiple of that.
To be correct, a 1.5V battery isn't a battery, it's a cell. It only becomes a battery if two or more cells are combined to produce a higher voltage, like 6V or 9V. Same for a car battery, which is 6x2V cells.
From wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_%28electricity%29)
"Formally, an electrical "battery" is an array of similar voltaic cells connected in series. However, in many contexts it is common to call a single cell a battery."

That's right, six 1.5V cells.
