TGS challenge: the sandwitch

okay, this is gonna be my humble entry, maybe its not the hugest mod of alle time, BUT its effective as hell

i made the mod to a case i have made, beacuse there was little room to my 4 harddrives, and i did not have the space to put a harddrive cooler to each hardrive.

the idea was that with water cooled harddrives there is not the huges ammount of heat transfered, and the most blocks would easily transfer more heat away without dropping the temps

SO, i desided to make a sandwitch with 2 harddrives and 1 hdd cooler.

good things:
half the price to cool 2 drives
3 hdd slots occupied instead of 4
less tubing in your system

bad things:
you mention? :P

ive cheated and already measured the temps in the case compared to 2 other drives that dont have a sandwitch:

hdd 1&2 (non-sandwitched)
50/55 C
hdd 3&4 (sandwitched)
35/40 C!!!

to you consideration, the waterloop consists of one dual 120 mm rad, a amd 5200+ cpu, and a eheim 600 pumpstation, so with a bigger pump, and 2 rads, this might work even better:D:banana:

now that was the peptalk about why you should by this wonderfull little thing, ore just make one yourself ;)

since i could only get a block to cool 1 hdd side, this is what ive planned to make if i could make it go into production:

in the original model there is only a cobber block on the one side, and therefore its not cooling my other harddrive as much (but still alot:D)

Cool idea. Now you need to help them "flip" video cards and such over so that the heatsink is on the top instead of the bottom. o0 Seriously, don't rotate the mobo 180 degrees, just reverse your designs... unless it seriously is too complex to do...

You know how when you put a video card in a tower style case and the processor and RAM are almost all on the bottom, along with the heatsink facing downward? They need to make it so that the processor and all that good stuff are on the top, as heat rises. This would probably reduce temps by about ten degrees Fahrenheit (sp?) at least. Sorry if I talk kind of weird, I'm sick and a little loopy.

heh it might, but since the airflow leads the air out of the case on many gfx coolers nowaday, and the cpu almost always is on top i dont se the point:p ... or what it have to do with the harddrives and watercooling but you might have a point heh?

Yeah, just absentmindedly 'jacking another thread... but yeah. I do like your cooler idea though, good for low space environments. By processor I meant the one on the graphics card. :p

Of course there is, along with the low altitude wind powered solar panel generator. That and the pie.

Lol... talking about my idea, but I'll stop it with the 'jacking, sorry dude, I'm waaaaay out of it today, I don't feel good and I'm not the only one it's affecting.

But yeah, that is a sweet idea... how much do those coolers go for? If you mod one and I get like a RAID array set up, I'll get me one o' dem.

cool idea i would buy one if i didn't have a lot of space for fans.

i don't understand it though is this finished or no? i only see a copper plate on the one side and not two like in the 3d model.

and the coolers go for about 50/60$

yeah:D... and the fact that you might as well use 1 for 2 beacuse it almost makes no different in the cooling:D

It's a great design, especially how the water flows through the device. My only suggestion is to make fins from each copper plate protrude into the path of the water. More surface area = more efficient cooling.

It could even be made out of 2 pieces of copper w/ a gasket in the middle, but that would be expensive to make if you wanted it to be the thickness of a HD. Nice job though! Especially since you made not one, but TWO prototypes!!

Looks great so far, I love this idea. So basically you are going to add another piece of copper to the water blocks so you can attach another HDD or are you going to get another 2 water blocks?

i would if i had the time and materials:)... right now ive just put together that solution, beacuse it works fine to my needs, and IMO working and looking god when the fluids and lights are on:D

when i get the thing asambled again (just had to take apart the whole thing because of a leak:/) ill take a bunch of pics with a proper camera:)
and the whole mod is on another site, and the webmaster isnt as satisfied with having it on other pages since he laid alot of money in it:P so did i:D

yeah heh... i would like to be able to remove the rad from the system when i move it:/... but cant find anything that can take the hoses apart without letting the fluid out... saw it inhere somewhere though:/
