Welll I have been running two 7800gts in sli for over two years and i was thinking of getting a 8800gtx. My only concern is, is something new coming out right around the corner? Ive looked around but have not found a straight answer, only theory. I dont want to buy a 8800gtx if i could wait 2 months and get something better or cheaper (maybe both). I am an nvidia fanboy (had a few bad experiences with ATI) so not ATI cards please :D.
Thanks for any help on the subject.

I think the next gen of cards should be out soon... I'd wait for the 8800s to go down in price and maybe get two in SLI if it works out that option is better... just wait and see. I have an 8500GT and it kicks ass, most games at 1024x768 maxed out completely. Just wait for a bit.

if you don't mind the wait then well wait, how do those handle new games?

I've got Oblivion maxed out and the same with Dark Messiah and CnC3... they're great at lower resolutions. Lemme try to find the model I have, it was like $60 after rebate, $70 before. Great cards, great value. Good for any system you want to have PCIe in but can't afford the latest high end crap for. I also have 1gb Dual Channel DDR2 800 RAM or something and my 2.8ghz Pentium D. I'll grab the link in a sec.
EDIT: Here's the link:

i meant dan's 7800GTS's, but good to know the 8500 can handle what it can for that price. by the sounds of that i woulda gotten a better price/performance ratio with that card than my 37.99 7200se/7300gs. ohwell, it will be interesting to see what happens to my gaming settings once that 4gb's of ram arrives and if the video card actually does what it says and up's itself to 512 instead of 128.

I wonder if I could get two of my cards in SLI, that'd be much cheaper than getting anything higher priced... I'll check the box. From what I can remember, it can, but it doesn't hurt to check again... I'd just need yet another motherboard though and I just bought this one...
EDIT: Yesh! It is SLI ready! W00t! That's an awesome card for SLI if it's as good as it is by itself. I should do that one day.

Right now Im waiting for the 9800GTS. Its expected in Early November, and will cost $400-$450. Based on the specs and speculations, it looks like the 9800GTS will absolutely pwn the 8800GTX. If you really want you can go for the 9800GTX, which will be $550+. Just as long as I have my graphics card in time for Crysis (So I can play it with DX10 @ 1680x1050), I'll be happy.

The 7800s handle games rather well. Ive just noticed with a few newer games I have not been able to run the graphics as high as I would like (Lost Planet). Bioshock runs on high settings at 1440*900 (19 in wide) but I want to prepair for crysis and a few others. I guess i will wait for the new cards and see what is best for my needs. No use in buying a one year old card and have it be replaced in a month lol.
Thanks guys +rep

I might pick up an 8800 series card when the 9800's have been around a little while, fetch me a good deal and have something to use for a while.

That sounds like a plan but, AMD and nvidia have been known to not ever lower their prices (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121023)on their old high end cards, and if so, not by much.

Yes, there is something newer, better, cheaper and faster coming out. There always is. However it won't come out until the week after you buy your hardware.

lol so true the exx50s came out right after i bought my e6600. what ive learned is just buy what you want when you want it and dont look back. your computer will always be faster than it was before

So true, I'm thinking I should've bought an SLI board and gotten another 8500GT, but oh well. I'll just upgrade to an 8800 when the 9800s come out or whatever. I still love this card, lol. Sooooo much nicer than that 6800XT.
