I'm thinking of doing it as a gag to pull on someone.

Fake wound (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/835982/how_to_make_blood_appear_in_body_without_any_wound/)

Cyanate? As in cyanide?

Your actually pretty close there luke.

The thiocyanate anion is created by mixing elemental sulfur with cyanide.

Chemically they have different properties and such but no they aren't the same.

Thiocyanate is SCN-

while

cyanide is CN-

both have CN as a triple bond, so the thiocyanate is kinda like just tacking a sulfur right on the end there...

But if you want to look at something and see something kinda creepy...

One of the more potent cyanides is potassium cyanide KCN, the compound they are using is KSCN. Both have a triple bond between the C and the N, which is what every cyanide consists of. I wouldn't go mixing that potassium cyanate with just random things though, you might get that sulfur to precipitate or form a bond with something else, and end up with KCN or HCN or NaCN ,of which are the more potent cyanides.

The reaction they are doing is fine...but myself, I wouldn't go around trying to mix it with something else and then go putting it on your skin...that could turn out pretty crappy...but it doesn't. You cant convert thiocyanate to cyanide by any conventional means. hehe, no worries. You might have some sort of reaction to the potassium thiocyanate though, usually nothing major, but some people do.

edit: oh, I was a Chem major for a while, so im not some nerd, I simplified that all quite a bit, but i hope you get the picture

How the *fbomb* is that simplified? hahaha
+rep for being a huger geek than me.

Lol. Thanks.

I did try to simplify it, but I wanted a little more than just ya they are similar but not the same at all.

Just weird how close they look chemically and yet how different they are. Just looking at it you would think that you could accidentally make cyanide by mixing the wrong compounds together or something with that thiocyanate...but like i said there isn't any way by conventional means to make that happen. Just still creepy to look at it and see the similarities. If all i had was the chemical formulas around I wouldn't go playing with it, but for the most part it turns out to be safe.

Like i said, just used to be a chem major. Now im in software engineering. I got bored of chem, even though I was given a free full ride to some big pharmaceutical college in Boston. My mom helped out the Headmaster or dean or whatever they are called and he gave us an offer, but I was bored with it so I turned it down. Sometimes I feel stupid, but sometimes you have to go with what you enjoy over what you are good at.

Scary is I understand most of that. Although it is probably due to the fact I am currently in a chemistry class. My major is actually engineering.
