View Full Version : bought me a laptop

Got myself a little laptop. Completely fed up of using the handicapped system in the hospital (six inch long qwerty keyboard + firewall hell)....
So went down the local PCworld when they had an end of line sale on ... got a Compaq Presario with Dual core Intel 1.6ghz Procs, 1Gig Ram, 15.4" screen DVD/CD RW+ running Vista.
http://www.vipassanaforum.net/Lappy.JPG
Was reduced from £430 to £330 for clearance but had no battery ... so I offered the manager £300 ($600 ish) and he said yes. Stuff is not as cheap here as in the US but I consider this a nice bargain .. only going to cost me £35 to buy a battery on ebay.
Then I got myself moved into a bed on the east side of the hospital next to a window ... the building opposite my window has a free wireless public access wifi - gets a little slow and jumpy in the week but works real fine in the evenings weekends.

nice, i don't really like laptops though, (mainly the touchpad, but that can be easily fixed with a usb one)
hope things are doing good in the hospital, guess they are if your buying laptops haha. don't forget to take your blue pill there! :)

As for the laptop, not a bad buy at all.... now you have to run SuperPi on it! :P

V for valium? ... I'm on the yellow ones for control of muscle spasm (Diazepam 5mg x 3 a day) blues are 10mg. But they are wearing off as I have been on them for two years ... sooo we are currently in a new "drug experimentation phase" that is playing hell with me - mainly because they are trying to treat me for "Neuropathic pain" instead of the spasms based on a fowl and fictitious report by a Neurologist.
.. so the current prescription is Amitriptyline - the antidepressant - which is known not to have Muscle relaxant properties though is good for Neuropathic pain and is therefore doing me no good whatsoever but is likely to get me addicted to yet another useless drug.
Problem with doctors here is if you don't "comply" with their ideas you are not going to get help - and if you do "comply" when they are plain wrong they walk off pretending they have done their job.

Interestingly also a BIGTIME recreational drug with the young in this country who want to stay up all night having "fun" ... and don't seem to realise that when they are over thirty, in all likelihood, they will need to plaster themselves in bondo to get a stiffy.

Yes ... that chimes with my experience and quite literally with my description of them ... "They have their heads so far up their a***s they don't know what the sun looks like any more" - which would indeed make them "full of themselves".

I bloody hope not. 41 is too old to die young and too young to die old. I'm not ready for my life to be "complete" in any sense. Perhaps when I have starred in a porn film :D

Ummmmm ... I am a Buddhist dude, since 1999 when I took the Refuge Vow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refuge_%28Buddhism%29) under my teacher the Venerable Khandro Rinpoche. I am in the Crazy Wisdom Lineage of Karma-Kagyu/Nyingma Tibetain Buddhism. No offence taken. :)

Sick??? I call them "Patent Lies" ... and by the way they tried to censor me from posting to all my websites - a breach of my human right to free speech.
They caved in by the 3pm deadline I gave them before I would launch legal action. (http://freedomforall.net/?s=patientline)

Deeply wishing for Fibre To The Home. Although, this'll do for now.
This is about 11 o'clock, so it'll get slower as everyone else connects.

The town I'm in is pushing for a FTTP project (Fiber to the Premise) that would offer a "triple play" package, phone, cable, and internet for one monthly bill.
Internet would be at least 100mbps too! I'm pushing for more at my place, lol. You can only torrent so much, then it's just like "what now?"
Also, Shaw is going to be offering 25mbps service here for $99/month CAD starting in December. That makes my current 10mbps seem pretty unbearable. :P

I think the future won't be fttp at all .. I think it will be decentralised wireless mesh/cell networks where we all share our bandwidth and pass it from home to home as needed so we can stop using huge intermediary companies.
Just a thought.

Nope .. I'm just very good at predicting certain trends and such. Like predicting Ratzinger would be the next (and last) pope which I did back in 1997.
Only this one imo is a technical and financial no-brainer. Mesh/cell networks from home to home will replace almost all telecoms technologies within 5 - 10 years. Wires and fibres will die except to join big cities and cross oceans is my prediction on this one. Why? Because the infrastructure cost is fractional.
It wall be the next stage in comms tech.

Ya it is a bit of a no-brainer i suppose, There is already a city in brazil somewhere that has loaded their routers up with linux and done this.

Ive just googled for the last half an hour and cant find it. Dont have a clue where I saw it!
But wat they had done was created a honeycomb effect with routers throughout the area with only a couple actually connected to a line.
I'll let you know if I ever come across the article again

Really though that is where the future is .. and open-source Linux firmware-hacks for routers to achieve it will probably be where it starts.

Good link thanks Calum +rep.
Sherlock Holmes just advised me that it could possibly be because they speak Portuguese in Brazil that a Portuguese website appears. On his advice I visited babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr?doit=done&url=http://www.wayflex.com.br/&lp=pt_en)and google (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wayflex.com.br%2F&langpair=pt%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools) translation services. By jove Watson, he was on the ball:
Babelfish told me:
"Wayflex telecom offers to the best way you to have its right connection InterNet of high speed with quality and prices.
The not qualified flexibility that the access without wire provides to allow that using of last mile, lines and that they search a service more efficient, flexible and economic can have access the InterNet of high speed with quality.
Domestic users now can sail in the InterNet in broad band, without wire, counting on a professional structure of access.
Corporative users also can be benefited with our technology, connecting external branch offices, agents and customers. In partnership with the most respected companies of the segment."
~o~ (translation ends - note for those who can't tell the difference between me writing English and a computer doing it)
Google told me pretty much the same thing but with a slightly less humorous translation hence I shan't trouble you with the details.
In short this is the sort of thing I'm thinking of but not managed by corporates, managed by user groups.
Get 100 or 1000 people in one area of a city to bang their routers up with one of the linux distro's then throw in a three or four T3 connections and bob (and his anarcho-communist buddies) are your aunties next-to-free-ISP.
I have a vision: We will sail in the InterNet of broadband for next to a nothing and putting up two fingers in the general direction of the capitalista pigs (except the one's we buy the T3 connections from :D).
CrazyB
EDIT: PS Further research tells me the price they are charging of 49.90 Brazilian Real, or £13.65, a month is probably beyond these good folk of Rio de Janeiro.
http://www.latinamericanstudies.org/brazil-estrutural-slum.jpg (http://www.latinamericanstudies.org/brazil.htm)
Now here's an interesting community project: Gather a load of "redundant" hardware and go "wire the slums" - wirelessly, of course.

Are you thinking about this (http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2006/08/71608) in Dharamsala? If so, although being lead by the Tibetan Government in Exile, .... it's actually in India .. but it IS amazing and just the sort of thing I was thinking of - not only for the slums of Rio - but as being the next generation of network everywhere.
I find it hard to believe that the heavily repressive Chinese Government that rules over its Tibetan colony would allow anything as anarchic as a mesh network to be developed. They don't even let kids in Beijing look at the net without it going through a government firewall and filter.
