British marine biologists have found what may be the oldest living animal — that is, until they killed it.

The team from Bangor University in Wales was dredging the waters north of Iceland as part of routine research when the unfortunate specimen, belonging to the clam species Arctica islandica, commonly known as the ocean quahog, was hauled up from waters 250 feet deep.

Only after researchers cut through its shell, which made it more of an ex-clam, and counted its growth rings did they realize how old it had been — between 405 and 410 years old.

Another clam of the same species had been verified at 220 years old, and a third may have lived 374 years. But this most recent clam was the oldest yet.

"Its death is an unfortunate aspect of this work, but we hope to derive lots of information from it," postdoctoral scientist Al Wanamaker told London's Guardian newspaper. "For our work, it's a bonus, but it wasn't good for this particular animal."

Wow. That must be one species that has some rock solid DNA. Or maybe there isn't a whole lot of radiation at 250 feet below the ocean.

I remember reading in the news about muscle/shellfish glue... They had a truck glued to a beam from it's bumper hanging from a crane.

I forget how much the price was but I believe it was upwards of 100,000 per ounce? Milliliter? Some ridiculous amount...

Somewhat off topic but not really if you think about the mass amounts of undocumented muscles being killed. Not that I care about muscles since they have farms of them, just thought it was pretty interesting.

over 400 years old? wtf?! That is just insane... and at only 250ft.

Well, I guess it's what has to be done to tell how old it is? Or can they still determine it's age without breaking it apart? I think it was worth it just to know that creatures can live that long. I'm positive it wasn't the oldest animal in the ocean... just the oldest we've found so far.

Yeah, the ocean is freaking huge, and so far we've only found what we have been lucky enough to find. There ARE older things in it, as well as hundreds of species we havn't found yet. And you know its impossible to prove me wrong.

The only question I have is "Did they have drawn butter" ?
