I have been away from modding for quite a while ( major mods) but I have a new project in mind that I need to get done. I start working from home 2 days a week starting the first of the year and really need to organize and maximize my desk space. I have a fairly large desk ( will post measurements and such soon). I am toying with the idea of wall mounting my monitors but I do not want to spend alot on mounts. My budget for this project is $300 or less. I would like to create a usable workspace that efficient. I feel the first step to this is to get quad monitors up off the desk and i figured while im am doing that i may as well mod them as well ( I really like the LCD mods with plexi and LCD's ) most of you have seen them many times but I am linking just in case.
http://metku.net/index.html?path=mods/transtft/index_eng
http://metku.net/index.html?sect=view&n=1&path=mods/transtft/index_eng4
This concept seems to work quite well for single monitors but I Want to adapt it to quad or at least dual monitors and make it wall mountable.
I Currently have 2 pcs at my desk each with its own set of dual monitors. And of course my laptop. I would be perfectly happy doing each set of dual monitors in a separate case ( in fact I prefer it) Also I need to figure out something to do with my big ass TV thats on the desk and the Direct TV receiver ( have a thought on that will post that later as well)
Now I use this set up for gaming quite a bit and you may ask do i really need all of those monitors.. Yes and no It is great for the game I play (EQ) I play 6 accounts at once from time to time. for every day surfing and such I still use all the space because I have it.. I RDP to quite a few servers so it works out nice. Any ideas you have would be wonderful!!!
Ok enough talk now picture time.

its actually not I have 6 hard drives in the box ( plus 3 ext. drives behind the monitors) what your seeing is alternating green and black light cold cath lights between each HD.

Very sweet looking monitor mod, if i had a spare beige lcd i would attempt it, but my only spare 15" is going into one of my cases. yeah...
BTW who makes that desk? It would be perfect for what i need in my room but i would need the longer section on the other side.

10-30-2007, 03:17 PM
D1337, it looks modular.
That desk would be great for my room too, and of course with a little custom woodwork, it'd be even better! :D
Sweet setup dude, I like the four monitors.

I never thought the multi-monitor thing was cool before I started using it at work. Having all that screen real estate is pretty sweet.
My next home system is going to either have a one really large widescreen monitor, or two flat panels.

Thats a really nice printer. We have dell workstations at work and we use that printer. It does things nicely.

10-30-2007, 06:17 PM
Lol I didn't even realize that was a printer until you mentioned it. I thought it was a dehumidifier. Ya those seem to be nice printers now that Im looking it up. Cool.
I like the monitor mods with the plexi, but personally I would prefer to have a cutout in the plexi. Looking through the glass would frustrate me I think. But to each their own I suppose.

I built the desk ( what kind of custom woodwork are you thinking) That may aid in my quest for a better workspace. I am not dead set on plexie.. in fact I agree I do not want a sheen on my monitors. Maybe i should just figure out a way to mount them as is on the wall and ditch the stands? I have been thinking of trying to set up Synergy (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/) so I can use one mouse and Keyboard across both systems if I do that i could stack the monitors... like below mount them on a peice of plywood and put them in the corner @ an angle down ( but it would have to swivel so I can adjust the angle...

Since it appears you have all LCDs, you could make some adjustable arms that hold them all in place. Make it so that you can readjust them so you have a long row [ ][ ][ ][ ] or the four stacked in a square like that. Go nuts with it.
imgregrice
10-30-2007, 09:17 PM
actually that was my orig thought but I having trouble thinking of a viable way to do that ( I dont have a machine shop.
Thoughts?
imgregrice
10-30-2007, 09:18 PM
one of my concerns is the cables with an adjustable setup
xRyokenx
10-30-2007, 09:29 PM
one of my concerns is the cables with an adjustable setup
For that I'd attach them to the arms somehow... just get longer cables (I know the quality goes down, but yeah...) and zip tie them to the arms with enough slack on joints for maneuverability (what a long word, eh? lol)... I think that would work out...
imgregrice
10-30-2007, 09:38 PM
yeah quality is huge for me I have alot invested in quality screens and vid cards and I only use DVI cables plus I doubt I could buy 4 arms for under $300 which is my budget. unless anyone has some kind of trick or brilliant plan!
xRyokenx
10-30-2007, 09:57 PM
You could also build a cabinet, lol... or MAKE the arms, I don't think it's too hard, just draw up some plans (or get someone that knows what they're doing to draw them for you), and make them out of square stock or something...
I don't know how much quality would be lost if you have a couple extra feet of cable... It's too bad they don't make wireless video connectors.
imgregrice
10-30-2007, 10:07 PM
I want it to look nice im thinking making the arms wouldn't be really hard but i dont think I have the tools to do something like that ( depending on material I guess)
xRyokenx
10-30-2007, 10:09 PM
You'd just have to look for the right kind of hinges and use a drill press for screw holes... if you're inexperienced it could be dangerous using tools like that... hmm...
Take a look around your area and the web to see what options you have. That's what I'd do.
imgregrice
10-30-2007, 10:22 PM
yeah thats why I posted here and over at bittech but I havent really gotten anything about the mod from there yet just the software idea which is great!I plan to hit the hardware store soon.
also I dont have a drill press or access to one I have used them before but im no pro ( years ago in shop in highschool) its been over 10 years so..

Anyone else care to chime in ?

i dunno about attaching them to a single sheet of plywood...that sounds like it'll stick out to much. From the pics i see you have them all more/less lined against the wall in the corner, if you have one sheet of ply then it will be like having two monitors beside one another without the bend. Maybe two sheets or four, affixing them to the wall is just needing to find the studs right?
Orrrrr you could do like the other folks said and build the arms/stand 1 stand for all 4 would be hella cool but i wouldn't trust it. i think you could make arms outta either plexi or thin metal (plexi you could do a light mod without having any type of glare around you screen)
I think all them like [ ][ ][ ][ ] would do better then
[ ][ ]
[ ][ ]
kuz option B there would give you a bit more of the looking way up type of motion...might regret doing it later ya know.
So ya, my opinion, make a wall mounted stand outta plexi or plywood buy something like these

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3200350&CatId=574
either or, and just mount them in a line! :) simple, useful and just paint the ply if thats what you are gonna use...and then it should look good kuz you wont see any of it.
If you like the sounds of that then today i'll do a quick sketch to show you more of what i mean
imgregrice
10-31-2007, 10:58 AM
yeah I agree i like them in the line as well but was willing to try stacking. the plan for stacking was if i do it I will have to angle it down so i am not looking up as much I would love to see a sketch though! I wonder what the best way to mount them in a row ( with the bends like they are set up now) would be then any thoughts on mounting the entire set up to the wall so it doesnt look getho?

Also found this its just about the same size as my direct tv box would make for a good drawer to mount the box under the desk ( still need to see it cause remotes friggn infrared) that would clean up desk space
I will do this or I have some of the same material the desk is made of could make a small box attached to put it in as well

10-31-2007, 06:47 PM
The items you found look cool. Im sure you could make those work in an interesting way.
As for monitor arrangement, I would go with them in a straight line. If you put them like the square arrangement, even if you angle them down you still have to tilt your head the same amount, you would just see them better with them angled. I would go crazy if I had to tilt my neck to see my screens. Talk about neck cramps.
imgregrice
11-01-2007, 12:00 AM
One thing I am noticing now with using synergy is its a LONG way to get from the far left monitor to the far right..
I am not real worried about the tilt as i can sit back in my chair.
here is what I am thinking now....
http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc76/altroth/untitled-1.jpg
With the bottom one being the laptop on the desk
now one thing to figure out is how to mount the board thats holding all the monitors to the wall and make it look good.... one thing that would be sweet is if it was adjustable so I could tilt it how I like raise and lower it ext. stince its in a corner I am not sure the best way to do so!
Jetty_200
11-01-2007, 08:30 AM
hmmm well if you wanna be able to adjust each monitor height, angle and w/e then i think you will be needing to buy 4 individual monitor arms....which will prolly be over $300
one thing i'm thinking is maybe you could raise/lower the whole lot of monitors and then individually adjust their angles...might be around $200-250 for the arms/mounts and just get a sheet of ply.
imgregrice
11-01-2007, 09:23 AM
Jetty- I just need to angle and adjust the entire lot. No need for me to be able to tilt each monitor separately. I hope to try to do a sketch up today.

I had this huge fight with ebay as well as a company i got it off of for about 2 months just to get it...but the end price was about $50

here's what i be talking about then man. If you wanna, then make the arms yourself, just buy the materials. The LCD brackets you gotta buy i imagine, unless you would like to fashion them outta plexi or something (no one will ever see that anyways) And ya, any questions just hola

11-01-2007, 02:13 PM
eh mate, k to use these i would think the bottom peice would be something like all-thread about 1/2" diam. and maybe 1/4" top parts. You should be able to find some sort of brackets that'll screw into the wall and take these rods. Same for the mounting to the plywood. I believe that you can grab these bars at homedepot. If not for sure on the net or hardware store. the brackets you'll either have to fashion or buy...i dunno if someone'll have exactly what you want but it should have somethin.....ok well i guess i'll do another sketch.
Is that what you think you'll want?

holy smokes! that looks like a crazy mon. setup eh :) i wish i had something like that! LOL
kool i like the idea of lifting everything up, seems pretty cool, would be able to utalize all space aswell.
http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/media-chair-7.jpg
Just need to add in the full size desk and such :)
Note: if it is going to be your permanent work stations (i.e. you aren't moving houses for a while) then i would prolly get like 3 or 4 of those mounts, setup the LCD panel :), then use one or two for extra movable desk space (bracketed to the wall with clip holders fashioned into the edges and then maybe one for your t.v., you can then move it right out the way without having to lift it and w.e.!! hahaha a lil more then what i believe you are looking for, but shoot high and you shouldn't be too upset with where you land
the option B (you know which arm i am reffering to, i think we should just call it option B from now on k) for the monitors, and this maybe for movable deskspace.
http://www.nti1.ca/images/monitor-keyboard-arm.jpg
Just put it upside down and it should work, or something like that. This way you may be able to attain up to 175% of the entire desk space you have there if not more.

wow that looks pretty slick :)
you wanna go for plexi?
imgregrice
11-02-2007, 11:52 AM
well im thinking about using plywood to mount the monitors to * painted of course* and then rather than sandwiching the monitors in plexi as I thought about doing when I first started ( due to possible glare) I was thinking about having someone fabricate a border about 4 inchs around the monitors and have the inside corners bent tward the back of the monitors ( for mounting to the plywood) and so it has a good crisp edge and not a crappy one on the inside ( where monitor touches plexi.) and having a custom tribal etch in it ( could probably do this part myself) add a few Green/ Blacklight LEDS and BAM!
now to find someone to buy/ cut/ sand edges and bend the inside edges of the plexi and mail it to me w a good price tag..... anyone?

see below for link to all kinds of info about the monitors. If you will notice on the back of the monitor it has the small mount area I am thinking I may take the stand apart and use the mount from that to go directly to the plywood.
will do a drawing later today

ok next task @ hand while I make up my mind on the monitor mod...
now that the receiver is out of the way what to do with my external hard drives...
I have 3 http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1769
and love them! they are currently behind the monitors in the corner however I would love to show them off somehow I love the look of them... Then only thing is I would have to replace the LCD in the front from blue to blacklight ( purple) or Green) to keep up with my color theme I want.
With that said I was tossing around the idea of doing some sort of plexi encloser for the hard drive encloseures .. what a mouthful!
It just so happens I have about 15 12x12inch sheets of 1/4 inch plexi..
Maybe I could build the enclosure and mount it on the wall somewhere ? or under the desk ( still visible) how sweet would it be to etch the entire thing something like the doors of 13 ghosts http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/img/review/011102/ghosts_l.jpg
then putting a fan in the back to keep it cool ( maybe 2 fans) and some sort of flex piping to it to encase the wires? I am starting to get stoked abut this project even more every day !!
what do you all think?

I do want to be able to show it off right now its on the floor with the window facing out and sitting on 2 pieces of 12x12 plexi to keep the dust down ( as much as possible)

What about a stencil company for the small lettering? Would love to find a place I can send some txt and have them make like 18 pt font stencils made of some sort of plastic that I could use to run sandpaper over to etch the plexi does anyne know any place like this? I can not dream how much work would go into doing it by hand w a dremel not to mention my hand writing is a joke

Ok I started to take apart one of the stands it looks like im going to have to dremel it to get the mount I want off. which i really didnt want to do but its that or buy mounts @ $20 a pop x 4 = 1 bill thats more than i wanted to spend on this project. See below for the mount arrow is the area ill have to dremel

Isn't the deadline for this project coming up soon? If not, I would still like to see this thing completed. Its a great idea. Good Luck man.

Update time **
Bought this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN:IT&ih=015
Should be here any day now.
now I need to figure out how to mod the mount so I can use it on my desk
thoughts?
ideally if I had a welder I could just bend out the clamp section and weld a square plate with 4 holes in it for mounting
Moved this to WIP. Keep up the good work imgregrice.

I've got a really bad idea that theoritically could work :p
sledge hammer + wall = hole
hole + monitor stand = cheap bracket
It may not be the best idea but i think it has some style :)

I like the idea of this mod. Good luck with it, should turn out interesting. A plexi framed monitor would be absolutely sweet with the glass desk I have right now.

it may be a while before I get to the plexi part of this mod the plan is to build a shelf above the monitors now ( corner) to put both of my towers on to get them off the floor.

in order to get the towers off the floor here is a ROUGH paint of a couple options I was thinking of http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc76/altroth/DSC02534edit2.jpg
or
http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc76/altroth/DSC02534edit.jpg
Only issue with option 2 I see really is how make the cables look ok.... If the monitor cables and usb where a bit longer I would just to threw the drywall thoughts?

I'm not really sure what you are asking. The pics are kind of dark.
how bout making a mod out of it and building both pc´s into a triangle shaped computer that you could mount on the wall:) or simply put up as a shelf with some of thoose L shaped things:D THAT would be awsome

Holy crap.. has it really been over 2 years since I last posted in this thread...
I really could ( maybe should) start a new thread on this but really what I am looking to do is a continuation of whats in this thread....
Lots has changed in my life since this project was born. Ironically the most notable change is the birth of my daughter! With that being said she has turned my life upside down! Now I am looking to not only make my setup as cool as possible but as out of reach and child proof as possible... This makes for some interesting challenges. I have updated pics but for some reason they are taking forever to upload. What my current needs are to revive this project is to hide / organize cables and power strips under my desk. Between my dogs and my daughter they have managed to destroy what little organization I had on those cables.
Another obstacle I would like to tackle is how to conceal my Sub for my sound system ( again so the kid cant get it) as well as create some sort of footrest under the desk.
It may be hard to tell from what you can see in those older images but I am going for a modern / industrial look. Please feel free to toss in any input you guys can think of with out seeing the setup modern day ( it really has not changed a lot)
I have updated my monitors to 4 22inch wide screen dells and added a threaded dowel rod to the center of the shelf above for support and looks.
I also only run one box now to control the 4 monitors.

and I just realized I never posted the solution to the shelf for the PC's above the monitors Ill be sure to get pics up of that

that is the Shelf I made to hold the tower(s)
reason for the mess on the shelf is I reloaded the OS and swapped a Hard drive this weekend which is why the sides off...
I am so pissed you have to use a floppy to load raid drivers still
LAME!

I like this and no offense but... the dryer vent has got to go. it looks horrible I must say. I would rather look at bare wires. lol
some ideas would be pvc piping (painted of course), or even some good old fashioned cable ties and split loom. Unless you are actually using that ducting for some useful purpose?

No offense taken...
I have been looking for a way to hide those cables with out it looking all "jacked up"
Any thoughts are welcome!
Ill post more pictures soon of the current state of this mess....

One more note: I did buy a large piece of Pegboard to help with cable management below the desk
