okay okay. We all know that Intel beats AMD's current line up in almost every way. OR do we?

Intel probably does, but can someone point me to some good benchmarks on price vs. performance, in gaming and probably video editing/compiling?

The ol' amd 3500+ is still holding strong, but if i happen to come into some money I want to know what kind of system I am going to build, with what, and the first question I will be asking is what intel and AMD have to offer. And I want benchmarks, not some asian newspaper site claiming that intels new chip is clocked at 72 Ghertz, and will get a 10 billion score in awesomemarkpro.

You'll notice that the top 5 are all intel.

HOWEVER, the new AMD processors are coming out shortly. So in short, if you can't wait, go for a Intel Core 2 Duo or Intel Core 2 Quad, but if you want to wait, then you may want to wait for the next gen lineup.

Yea it'll be sweet to see the first true quad cores from AMD and theyre talking about bringing out a tri-core version as well for the smaller budget.
So def wait until you see what AMD have to offer, if nothing else it will drive down prices of everything else

One interesting note I have found out lately.

The Core2duo/quad and the xeon are almost exactly the same proc. the difference? The xeon is a socket 771 and has the logic to work in a multiple cpu (physical cpu that is) motherboard. The core2duo/quad does not have this logic enabled.

When does AMD release their next gen? It should be soon... it's about time they make something that can (hopefully) beat out intel's stuff.

Although I don't see ATi coming out with something fun. They're kind of in the hole, and so is amd at the moment... I see them coming back, though. At least they have nearly a monopoly on the laptop market. Not that a monopoly is a good thing...

what happened to that 64 core chip from a third party? Everyone was talking about it then nothing more.

well i was first intel, then i switched to amd (never bought any, but if i had the cash i would have went with a amd) then once the duo came out i was for them and still are. i hope the amd chips are as good as the current intel line up and also hope the new intel chips are twice or more as good as the current line up. that way intel will have to keep prices competitive but still better.

i'm also nivida all the way over ati and hope the same happens with the next gen stuff.

I have always been an intel user. I have an amd based system but for the life of me I cannot remember the proc. I think mostly I have been intel because I seem to have gotten better deals with intel based mobos and procs. I only went with intel in my new rig because of the deal I got on the mobo (below cost) and proc (free). I just need to upgrade from this pentium D 950 to a quad core and I will be set.

For graphics cards it has depended on the OS for me. Windows, 75% have been ATI, 15% nVidia and 10% other. Linux, 80% nVidia (quadro mainly), 5% ati, 15% other.

Recently though I bought an 8800gts 640mb since I did not like what I was reading about the xt2900.

Time will tell, but I have confidence in AaMtDi.

BTW, I am looking forward to what amd has to offer cpu wise. They have some talented people and a great base to work from so I expect good things from them.

If I somehow get some cash, I will wait for AaMtDi to release their hopefully awesome next gen stuff. I've been an amd fan for years, and I don't want to switch over to intel (I have the underdog complex I suppose). I currently have an ati chip, an x800pro. It's been 2 years and still holding in there strong. No problems, except would overheat before I got a huge arctic cooler heatsink for it. I used to have an nVidia 5500 but the fan was way too small, and I hated it. Buzzy evil little thing. Evil. It did work well though, At the actual gaming and such, but it was really cheap so the fan was skimped upon.

Overall, I suppose that I could go to the dark side and go intel/nVidia, but I will wait. Heck, by the time I have any cash, it will be later. Maybe months. By then, the market could be totally different. What you can count on, though, is that everything will be faster, and stronger. Someday, I won't be ashamed to put the specs of my system in my sig, and it won't be because its a full intel setup.
