Ok well, here in Melbourne Australia its hard rubbish, which is like you throw everything you dont want onto the street and people come and collect it..

I went searching for computers and in 5 mins i found 4 PC's.
ATI Radeon Card(i think).
20GB MaXtor HDD.
256MB x2
128MB x1
Unknown x2 (RAM)

here are some pics.

Awesome, always fun to find free stuff. You could make a half decent file server with that stuff. Hopefully it all works well.

No, they don't, because computers have hazardous materials in them. They go to special places where they are disposed of properly.

Also, after Googling "linux file server tutorial" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=linux+file+server+tutorial), I got 7,580,000 results. So I'll let you look through them.

okay lol then buying a second hand one shouldnt be a problem :P

To make a very decent file server, you don't need much over a 700MHz Celeron with 256MB of RAM. You could put on something like DSL (Damn Small Linux) or a base Gentoo install, and run it headless and without a UI (headless meaning no monitor, keyboard or mouse). Then, you could just use SSH to access the files (what I do with mine).

And either way, you could install a lightweight DE with, say, FVWM or EvilWM for the WM and have a very usable server with a UI.
