Personally i use Pencil for any design i do whether it's a mod or work, its sketched in pencil, then i go over with black pen then take it onto the computer. As for 3DSM or Sketch up, i don't know either that well, i have used Sketch Up, but im trying to learn some 3DSM now.
But Photoshop is more my thing.

There's no comparison between 3dsmax and Sketchup. They are on completely different levels of complexity and performance. That being said, if you had more than 30 days to learn and use 3dsmax, I'd say that.
But since it's a 30 day trial, Sketchup. You won't be ANYWHERE good enough at Max to be able to model a computer before the trial expires. Sketchup is more like a 3D drawing program; in fact, it's nothing like any other 3D program I've used (because it's so simple). If you want to make good looking 3D models, download and learn Blender (http://www.blender.org). I'm learning it right now, and I'm working on a model too (that, after a week of focusing on Blender, looks really nice IMO). It's free, open souce, and works on almost every platform (Windows, Linux, OS X, BSD, Solaris... the list goes on).

Solidworks - admittedly the only CAD package I've used in detail but I love it, Its really easy to pick up and you can even make components move if you need to!

If you want SolidWorks, get the Personal Edition (http://www.cati.com/solidworks_3d_skills.htm). It's free.

Cinema 4d. It's quite easy to get used to... got it fairly down in a couple months 90 min a day in my 3d animation class a couple years back.
