Well i thought of somthing that is doable.

have 1 chamber of strong uncrackable glass with the mobo and everything inside that.. then! have that sitting in another chamber filled with water and fishes?

pretty neat. but isnt VERY exciting. just a thought

I've seen monitors and cases turned into fish tanks, but never with a working computer..

My only concern is the heat may warm up the water and kill the fish...

get tropical fish that live in warm water :D

exactly!

if you could manage to find a small fish tank, about the size of a mobo, you could just dump that in a big tank.

i might try that in a few years once i get used to modding

This sounds like the original plan for the NemoTank by MintyMadness.. but that was a while ago. Here is another really nice fish tank computer mod that was posted over on Bit-Tech. http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=134111

I think your plan would look spectacular if done right!

great idea but won't the noise desress the fish? I mean computers produce alot of vibrations as well and u can't eradicate them in water.

Maybe you could just vacume pack all the componets after u put them together and then they can be just dropped in teh water and have all round water cooling.

Or its not water proof and u kill the fish and the pc?

A vacuum packed PC would overheat.. no air means no airflow. Plus, how would you run the cables in? ;)

If you mount all the components on silicone or rubber grommets (or standoffs, etc), you would have minimal vibration tranmitted into the tank. Also, fewer fans and moving parts = less vibration too.

Submersion cooling only "works" in non-conductive liquids, such as mineral oil. There are a number of projects out there that have done this successfully. Why did I highlight "works"? The oil needs to be replaced, and it's really messy and can be difficult to dispose of. Also, you'll never be able to use the components anywhere ever again after they've been submerged in oil. Ugh.

Back to the fishtank idea.. Why not just build a small form factor PC, and mount it under an aquarium? Or was the idea to have it visible inside the tank? If so...

Build a seperate enclosure off the back of the tank out of acrylic, and wrap the sides around the aquarium, so it LOOKS like its in the tank. You can even put some fake plants and rocks and such in with the PC to make the illusion more convincing.

I cant imagine that a PC would generate that much more vibration and/or noise than a regular aquarium circulation pump/aerator anyways, and if you do go with some vibration isolation parts, it'll be less.

I say go for it.. should look cool. :)

I have always wanted to make a computer into a fish tank. I think it would look really cool. My idea was to have the computer in clear acrylic below the tank. But IN the tank would be even cooler! +REP

Put a fish pump inside the acrylic box that the computer will go in which will pump out the hot air... And for the problem of the cables, drill a hole in the acrylic box and then fix the spaces in the holes with silicone.

That's a good idea, but for the cables, all you have to do is run them out the bottom...

Build it from scratch out of acrylic. Build the case and on 3 sides put in a 1-2 inch gap for the water and put little fishies in there. A lit airstone on the side would look mad. then mount the optical drive above the level of water in the front panel, still have the rear side for I/O. Fans from the top to force enough air in and cool it. If i was half decent on sketchup i could show you wha i mean. The small volume of water in the sides should be fine if you build the case propery, not too heavy to break the walls/joins. then you may need a pump to create a current loop to keep the water well mixed/areated (just thought filter intake on one side, outlet on the other).

I think I can picture what you mean, I would just increase the width a bit. 1/2" I don't think would be enough width for fishes to swim around in ;)

It would be like they are living in a 2d world almost with that little space. :D

Get little fish ;)

Ok, an inch with small fish, if its a tropical set up use neon tetra's (at least thats what we call them in Aus), they'd have room to turn around in, and they'd be always presenting a nice profile :D
