Norton360 is a really good program but not free i think they have a 15day tiral you can use.

But the only free program i can think about it Spybot Search & Destroy (http://spywarebot.com/?hop=advanced99&p=3&gid=1072645447&oid=&aid=) but thats for Spyware & Adware

Comodo Firewall (I'm using it right now and like it), ZoneAlarm (another firewall), AntiVir Antivirus, SpyBot is good... AdAware SE... that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I want to bring this question back for a more current opinion. I use windows firewall, AVG antivirus, Spysweeper, and AdAware. AdAware is the only program that ever finds anything, both Spysweeper and AVG scan for a good half hour and come up clean everytime. Now if I really am virus and spyware free then that's great, but I am skeptical because it just seems unlikely, espeially the spyware. I even emailed Spysweeper's tech support about it and never heard back. Anyone else having similar behaviors? Recommendations for more effective programs? I did look at the wiki, but I'd also like to hear from your experiences.

I use AVG and it has picked up some stuff. My wife is fond of chatting and clicked on someone's picture.jpg.exe
It flagged that up right away.

I keep finding all sorts of files like that on my computer, except I run linux so there's no reason for any .exe files. That must be where they are coming from, my wife loves chatting also.

That's one advantage of linux, I can leave the computer safe in her hands, because even if she did download a virus, or other nasty, she wouldn't be able to compile it anyway. Ah, the power of root.:D

For antivirus software, a common package linux users like is ClamAV (http://www.clamav.net/). There is also a Windows version (http://www.clamwin.com/). I haven't personally used the windows version but the linux version works well.

Wasnt there only about 10 viruses discovered for linux in the last year compared to about 10,000 for windows?

Wasnt there only about 10 viruses discovered for linux in the last year compared to about 10,000 for windows?

"There are about 60,000 viruses known for Windows, 40 or so for the Macintosh, about 5 for commercial Unix versions, and perhaps 40 for Linux. Most of the Windows viruses are not important, but many hundreds have caused widespread damage. Two or three of the Macintosh viruses were widespread enough to be of importance. None of the Unix or Linux viruses became widespread - most were confined to the laboratory." (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/10/06/linux_vs_windows_viruses/)

Programmers that write those things are looking for the most damage as easily as possible. Since most personal computers in the world are running windows, it makes for a big target. If most people used linux, I'm sure there would be more viruses for us too.

Wow, those are some eye-opening stats.

I decided to download the trial version of Kaspersky's Internet Security to scan my system and see if AVG was overlooking anything. It found 3 Trojan viruses and 1 rootkey (or whatever) viruses. I may purchase this if it continues to work so well, but it does seem to swallow alot of system resources so it would likely be disabled when I'm not scanning. We'll see, I have 30 days to decide.

Try BitDefender also. Very, very good. It found a keylogger on my system that Avast and AVG couldn't find.

Anyone used the Zone Alarm deluxe edition with virus and spyware scans?

You need to remember that AdAware is not AntiVirus and AVG is not AdAware/Apyware, so they will find different things, chances are Kaspersky is pretty much an allrounder.

I'm aware of that, which is why I use both.

I have been using Avast anti virus last two years, Its very nicely working on my laptop. Before I used AVG, But I was very disappoint to that work. When I was formating my laptop so it was done completely but it was lost with my system file.
