Hi, just got a quick question i hope somone can help me with.

My first proper mod is in the planning stage and i'm trying to sort out an audio related problem.

I currently run a pair of of 6'X9' 3-way Pioneer car speakers on my desk. The problem is the output is somewhat lacking. Solution, an amp.

I'm planning to build a pair of kit amps, or maybe a small car amp (~100W) to up the output and prevent me destroying the sound card they're currently connected to. To power this i was hoping to use a second PSU i have lying around (the 400W should handle a smallish amp ok right?).

The question i really need answered is how to get this puppy to fire up when i boot the comp. Do i run a second switch on the front panel or can i double up on the mobo connectors to get it to fire up when i boot the system.

Actually, now that i'm here, what triggers the PSU from the mobo anyway? Is it just load?

Any help would be great, then hopefully i can start my new case!

There was another thread on this exact subject just a week ago. (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11278&highlight=car+audio)Check it out! ;)

If you are planning on using a car audio amp to power these speakers, I would say go with a dedicated, regulated 12v power supply. They are available as low as $50 from many retailers, and certainly provide the safest option to run car audio equipment.

A computer PSU isnt (in my opinion) suited to providing the bursts of power needed to supply an audio amplifier of suitable power.

Also, by pairing two PSU's together within a system, we are faced with the increased possibility of damage due to electrical failure (more parts = more things that can go wrong).

Check out www.partsexpress.com for some small amps that would be suitable for driving car audio speakers in a "home" system, that have either their own power supplies, or could be run from a regulated supply.

The main reason behind the use of a second PSU is to run my lighting and fans, i was hoping to avoid even more power supply in case. Might have to though

Thanks for your help guys, i did see that car speaker topic last week but couldn't remember which site. And i honestly did search before i asked!
