Start by reading this thread (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11273&highlight=distro) then... maybe... google ;)
most of the Linux distros are available on torrents (legally I mean)

Heh, nice link :D. You have an extra space in between best and case, so here's the right link: http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11273.

As if linking to that wasn't enough, here's another page on my site that might help. http://arcanesystems.com/index.php/General-Guides/Linux-in-a-Nutshell-A-Beginner-s-Guide.html

Before you can even install Linux on a system, you need to know what it is. (This is also in my Linux in a Nutshell guide) Linux isn't an OS. Linux is the kernel that the OS is built around. Different distros (distributions) use the Linux kernel to build the OS around. Knowing that, you need to find a distro that suits you. If you read my Distro Roundup (what Sly linked) you'll hopefully be able to find a good choice for you.

For a total Linux newb, I would suggest any of the ubuntu distros. Then again, I'm hooked on Fedora 7, which is serving my proxy, and web site (http://sgtm.homelinux.com) all from the comfort of my basement. Check my sig for a tut.

Uh oh.. I just noticed there's Fedora 8 now. Maybe it's time for me to upgrade.

Yeah, I upgraded to Fedora 8 recently.
(Ubuntu lasted one night...)

I have to say that Fedora 8 is worth upgrading to. Bigger choice of software available from the very beginning. So far, I've had no big issues with it.
