I have been lurking on this site for quite some time now, I recently registered and thought I might share one of my projects with you. At the moment I am busy with Amplifier 2.0. This project has been completed in april and I am using it as my workstation now.

The idea for this case comes forward out of discontent with my previous case. A normal ATX case which had only few options for better airflow. I was still in the modding mood after 'finishing' my Amplifier (http://www.godric.nl/amplifier.html) mod (It will be improved rather soon). So I started sketching an came up with a few designs. After some 3d models in Sketchup I had a winner! 8)

So I got started and had some wood sawwed at the hardware store. These parts wood would become my new case, which I baptized Red Rogue. I used a jigsaw to cut the various holes. I glued the hood of the case together, this was one of my more brilliant ideas. I wish to be able to get to my hardware at every possible moment. And the bended window made a door a bit difficult.

And these shots are after the rough work was finished.

Next up was making the bended window, something I haven't seen before and I am particular proud of in this mod. I was and am very happy with the result. I also made some plexi parts to stealth my optical drives. I used red acrylic for the different parts.

Because I have some fans on exhaust in the top, and I wish to open the hood at every given moment I had to come up with a different method to attach the fans.

http://www.godric.nl/pictures/CM_Red_Rogue/CIMG3195.JPG

After that my favourite work came up, painting...NOT. I didn't have enough space to get the job done easy, so I started rushing. Too bad that the result wasn't up to my standards so I re-painted it a small month ago.

At first I put the case on wheels, I was quite happy with riding around my case through the living room while still working on it. I did have my thoughts about the added value of the wheels to the case. They were not my favourite parts. The case then participated in the Benelux Casemod League and came out fourth at the casecons.

http://www.godric.nl/pictures/CM_Red_Rogue/P1010115.JPG

After this competition I disassembled the case to give it a new paintjob and some new feet. I also had the idea to place some aluminium profiles which I didn't put on in the first place. I haven't made any pictures of the extra work on the case re-painting it. It wasn't really interesting anyway :) .

As you can see the case has lost its wheels and is now on short legs with acrylic feet with a red led in it. I also mounted the aluminium profiles which I brushed with sanding paper.

Enough talk, see for yourself if you like the result!

I also made some extra pictures in the dark. At evenings I have a red light district at home 8) That's why I installed some switches (a few pics back) to turn of the lights when needed.

I took the case in this state to the Dutch Casemod championships and it took the eight place. For now on the case is finished, I am happy with the result and have no new ideas. I do have enough ideas for my Amplifier mod, so I will put my energy in that case. I am busy with this case at the moment, you can check my site (http://www.godric.nl) for more info ;).

Hope you liked it and I am happy to hear what you think of it! :D

Welcome to TBCS! I like the way the top is designed to fit the base, quite clever. It's nice and roomy and looks well ventilated also. But the paintjob looks a bit unfinished to be, can't really say what I think is missing but it just looks like it needs more detail. Otherwise it's great, scratch builds are my favorites!

Thanks for the compliments, and ofcourse the warm welcome! :) I will try to start posting more on other projects, I know myself that a reaction when busy on long project helps staying motivated.

@jdbnsn, could you try to elaborate a bit more about what you are missing? Do you mean using more accents like figures or lines in it, or do you think the white doesn't look good enough yet? I saw you joined gathering.tweakers.net, I am also from that site. I was already thinking, "were have I seen this name before". :)

Mate looks great, you should so chuck some red water cooling in that, more than enough room. I love the design, plenty of room to upgrade with new hardware. Colours compliment eachother perfectly. Once again great work +rep

like already said above, the paint is a bit boring. I rate if you did something more with the paint you would've came out on top

@The boy 4rm oz: Thanks :), when designing the case I also thought about upgrading and the possibility for watercooling. I am now busy putting watercooling in my Amplifier mod, when I really like that it is an option for Red Rogue as well (the € also have their say in this ;))

@Apsychowit: I can't exactly come up to speed with you how you think the paint would be better/less boring . Do you mean a different colour or something else. And were on the case would you change it? I don't mind any criticism, it only improves future mods. So get me up to speed! :D

Godric-
Yeah Floris inspired me to head on over to the Netherlands because I have been seeing so many cool mods coming from you fells so I wanted to see what I was missing. I am hoping that we can get more of you to come post your worklogs here because I have seen other great mods over there that I think many of our members are not aware of. Maybe some our members could do the same over there and we could all make new friends. As for the colors, I'm not quite sure really, maybe some accenting. I can put my finger on it but it just seems like it either needs a third color to tie the white and red together or designs. I love it anyway.

That looks really cool. Red is awesome. All the cuts are perfect but the color white is kind of boring. Maybe paint it black or red.

I think it looks kickass nice and simple like that. People are forgetting about simplicity these days, lol. (No offense to anyone of course) Scratch building adds a bit more of a personal touch and makes it easier to get the shape you want. Great job dude!

Thanks for the compliments! :)

@jdbnsn, the Dutch do have some great projects running at the moment, mods and cons. You should check out www.tbcl.nl (http://www.tbcl.nl). Next week are the finals for this competition and you can already look at the finalists, some really great cases are competing.

About the colour, I did think about metallic gray when choosing the colour. I choose for white in the end because it makes it very neat and clean. It is, as xRyokenx also states, more simple than most paint jobs and by that all the attention goes to the window and fans. Black might make it more 'cool', but that was not my intention. With my Amplifier (http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=134359) mod I will powdercoat the case mat black and the hood will be from plexi with a lot of blue paint and light accents, this will be more a show case, I am curious what you will think of it. I may post it in the future on this site as well.

I think it's the metal edging, it looks a bit unfinished. like pieces missing where it would make it look more symmetrical.

Could you explain how you bent the plexi? I'm curious on how you did it, might use that idea in my next mod.

you use a heatgun and slowly push it against an angled surface. simple yet elegant :D

Fuganater
11-21-2007, 03:19 PM
ah.... so no way to get a sharp angle?

Godric
11-24-2007, 05:02 AM
I did indeed use a heatgun. I strapped the plate on a workbench, heated the bend and let the smaller part come down and stopped heating on the right bend.

You can archieve a sharp bend, but not by bending ;), you should saw the acrylic in 45 degrees and then glue the pieces together. Take care of which glue you choose, one which fills up small gaps would be the best.

Very nice man. What kind of wood have you used?

That's good o'l cheap MDF! plus red deal for the supports if i'm correct.

I dont care what anyone says about the paintjob, I love it. Well done and +rep!

Thanks for the compliments and the +rep's! I did indeed use MDF and four short supporters. The supporters are screwed and glued on the bottom plate and to the front and back. Only 12 woodscrews in the whole case! :D

It's funny to read the different opinions about the paintjob, in the end I guess it is just a matter of taste. :)

i like this very much, i think the color is fine as long as it is in the right room.. if it's in a messy room or room with too much color it may look wrong..
being that it is made of wood, is it any quieter?

Godric
11-28-2007, 04:19 AM
Well the case does resemble me for a bit, so it is in a neat room. It fits in quite well. I don't know if it is quieter than this design made of steel, it is rather quiet though. All fans run on 7 Volts, and most of the time only two are on, that much airflow is just a bit overkill. The CPU fan is the noisiest so I will be putting that one soon on the fancontroller as well. Thank you for your compliment :)

I'm sorry, this is the first time that I have seen this worklog and I am very impressed. I love all of the fabrication and the amazing amount of ingenuity that has gone into this. Just beautiful!

Well, the only other international site the log is on, is Bit-Tech.net. It is also posted on the Mod Shop. You could also have seen some competition pics. Or are you following the Dutch sites as well :D
