hi i rescently bought some ocz pc2-7200 900mhz memory. but upon installing it cpu-z says it is pc2-5300 at 333 mhz. i know that the motherboard i'm using can take upto 800mhz but i dont know why the ram isnt registering its true speed. can someone shed some light on this for me.

thanks in advance
Farq

Have you the latest CPU-Z and have you checked your BIOS settings to be sure memory is automatically recognised and not set manually?

i have the latest cpu-z but dont know how to find the ram settings in the bios.

some motherboards will set the ram settings lower, i'm not sure why, but they will. you will have to go into bios and change the settings.

look for your motherboard manual and it should tell you in there.

what motherboard?

motherboard is asus m2npv-vm

the ram you bought, pc7200 @ 900MHz, is more then what the motherboard can handle, 800MHz, but the ram should run at 800MHz.

here (http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socketAM2/M2NPV-VM/e2527_m2npv-vm.pdf) is the manual if you don't have it, it tells you on 2 - 21 how to change the timings and speeds.

It's possible to get the RAM to 800MHz easily by setting the RAM divider, you may be required to increase the voltage for this speed.

A CPU-Z screenshot on the SPD tab will help me determine what you need. Also, telling which CPU you have will help.

the cpu is an amd 5600x2http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/Farq_02/d.jpg

i tried what spawn inc said but it doesnt appear to have worked

Apparently your motherboard is very fussy when it comes to memory. I have seen a few reviews saying it only supports the memory listed within the manual, and come corsair modules.

Perhaps your RAM is just not compatible with the Mobo? I would have thought if this was the case the system would not POST, but it is a possibility.

Might be worth :Googling: for reviews on your board and having a quick read through. Or you could :Google: 'asus m2npv-vm memory problems'.

Hope this is of some help.

As it turns out, im having the same problem, OCZ pc2-6400 800mhz ram in an ASUS m2n4-sli board, ram running at half speed.
Im working on it, so if i have any luck, i'll post my solution.

Flicking through the manual, you're going to have some trouble. The RAM requires 2.1V to reach 900MHz.

The motherboard has Auto or 1.9V.

Update the BIOS, it might help and give you more options, I can't promise that though.

I've never updated a bios before, never had the need to, so i just wanted to check something.

Looking at the asus bios list for my mobo, a lot of the bios versions have DOS as their OS, i was wondering what that means exactly?

You are running an AMD system ... so the memory speed reported in CPU-Z is half the actual speed it is running at. My PC3200 DDR400 Ram is reported as running at 200Mhz for example.

This means that your memory is running at 666Mhz which is the fastest you will get it to by changing memory timings etc. - as your board can not support it at 900Mhz - it's highest setting (2 x 454 = 908Mhz).

Now as you raise the FSB for any CPU overclock you will also be raising the memory speed at the same rate ... Sooo ... you can get your memory to operate faster by OC'ing the CPU through raising the FSB but if you push it past the Mobo limit of 800Mhz you will find the system starts crashing.

As the FSB is set to 200Mhz and your memory is capable of going to 20% faster than now (800/666 = 1.201) your FSB limit for any memory bottleneck will be 240Mhz .... if your CPU can handle this.

In short your memory has defaulted to the fastest speed your Mobo can handle (666Mhz reported as 333Mhz) and the only way you will get more from it is by upping the FSB.

Are you running an AMD system too? If so your memory is not running at half speed, merely being reported as that. EDIT I see from the Mobo you are running AMD. Sorry I didn't spot this earlier guys :)

It's got something to do with AMD based systems addressing the memory twice during clock cycles but I really can't be bothered to dig up the references.

Yes i am running an AMD system.
So what you are saying is that there isnt really a problem except the memory clock speed being reported wrong?

Thanks for the info CB, as per usual, you seem to have all the answers!

I'd say "reported differently" but no, no problem. If CPU-Z is reporting it at 400Mhz its running at 800Mhz i.e FULL SPEED AHEAD CAPT'N

:D

ps Re seeming "to have all the answers" .... the most important day in my life was a day in june 1997 when I realised I knew absolutely nothing about anything important.
