Well I made the leap into linux and went with Ubuntu hoping it would be the easiest to learn from. I am having problems installing the nvidia drivers for the 8800gt and I can not get my resolution set to 1440x900 without it screwing up the screen. Anyways, if anyone has ay step by step suggestions (im a newb to this) I would be greatly appreciative.

It's stuck at 1024x768, right? I have the same **** with an older card (4400 series... better than integrated).

try resetting xorg:
sudo dpkg -reconfigure xserver-xorg

That won't help unless the proprietary driver is already installed (and if you're stuck at 1024x768 then it isn't. Another way to check is if you see the Nvidia splash screen at boot).

This ought to work.

Well it turns out I was doing everything right but the 8800gt just will not work on Ubuntu. I put in the 7800gt and everything went fine. I guess I will be sticking with windows because I am not going to switch cards every time I boot a different OS. Oh well.
