How much can you take up in a fan grill before it makes it useless.

Not sure by what you mean as "take up".

My buddy would love whatever mod you were making with that thing though.

Thanks when I mean "take up" i mean out of the 120mm of the circle how much of the are in that can I take. Before the fan doesn't suck or blow out enough air?

The proxy here at work is blocking that picture. You want a fan grill to allow as much airflow as possible but still do it's job of keeping fingers safe. If you are looking at putting some kind of object in front of it, just remember, you are going to get more noise then function out of it.

The more you cover up the harder the fan will have to work to push the air, and will make more noise in the end.

The bulk of that will be in the centre of the fan where there's no airflow anyway, so I think you'll be ok with it.

It won't be very finger-proof though...

ya like xmastree said the main body of it will be in the dead zone of the fan, the centre.
