not as uncommon as issue as you'd think (if you do enough installs that is) a variety of things could cause this and they require a variety of respective fixes

while the depth of knowledge on these boards is mariners trench deep, google will offer all the answers and possible solutions/fixes/workarounds and save all of us a whole heap of typing :)

from M$ support pages (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314057) as good a place as any to start (assuming ur using xp)

win 2k version (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318728)

slightly more user friendly to read (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm)

will get ya started i hope if you try a few things and still 'no dice' I'm sure we can get to the bottom of it. Good luck :D

Have you got the floppy drive disabled in the CMOS/BIOS?

Are your CD & HDD on the same IDE cable? Can cause problems on install.

Also, if you are doing a clean install why not clear the BIOS completely and then just go in to change the boot order to CD/Floppy/HDD? To clear the BIOS you power down the machine (pull the plug) then move the clear CMOS jumper over for ten seconds or on some motherboards press a little button near the CMOS/Battery.

If all else fails, download a win98SE bootdisk with CDROM support from bootdisk.com and format the drive in FAT32 then boot off the CD or floppy disks and reformat in NTFS. That format will destroy all traces of anything from the XP install on the HDD

EDIT: seeing you want to do a dual boot, when you do the first install make at least two partitions, one for each O/S. I make a third smaller one to store software downloads in so when I do the inevitable windows reinstall I don't have to download everything again.

I posted on your other topic. You should try not to start multiple threads with one issue...
