We went to see some friends of ours on Sunday and they had a couple betta fish in two little fish bowls. I did not hear this from our friend. I asked my wife what possessed her to buy fish and she explained that they came from a wedding that they attended. I guess my MSH (male selective hearing) protected me from this stupid information when I was at their house.

I am not making this up. They went to a wedding and the people putting on the show put little fish bowls as the centerpieces of the tables at the reception. She came home with three of them because other people did not want to take home their fish bowls. One of her fish died and she gave my daughter one of her other two fish. We took him home and named him Finnegan. My wife had to buy a bigger fish bowl and some distilled water.

I still can’t believe this madness. Why would people push fish off on people who attend their wedding? I bet that over 70% of the fish die a horrible stinky death in the local sewer system. PETA should be all over this insanity. My wife told me that this is the new trendy thing to do at weddings. I hope that the next new trendy thing to do isn’t unleashing puppies and kittens at weddings.

Bettas are great fish and good luck. I would like to give you a few tips though.

You should not use distilled water for fish. It is not good for them just as it is not good for you. All you need is regular tap water. If you have city water, you can buy neutralizers or buy drinking water. If you are using a no filtered bowl, make sure you clean it every week and change the water. Do not use soap, it is very bad for fish, just rinse well. This gets rid of the poisons like ammonia they create through waste. Bettas are a tropical fish so the water needs to be around 78-80 degrees idly but consistent temps are better then fluctuating. Keep him out of the sun and away from heater vents. Ok, Im done my rant :)

You can look at this in a positive way though. You now have the chance to give this fish a much better life then it has had for the past year of its life. Bettas do have personality and can be fun to have around.

any more questions, just PM me.

Or let the city water sleep 24 hours, time for the chlorine to dissipate. that's enough in 90% of the times
But the neutralizers are inexpensive and work in 10 min.

I read your suggestions from a google search on "beta" fish. I learned that I was spelling betta wrong. The people we got the fish from told us to use distilled water, but the internet resources I found told me not to do that.

One of my co-workers has an uncle who gambles on fighting these fish. That's really sad.
