Fashion photography. Mostly experimentation for my Visual Arts major project. I'm actually working to improve my photography, so I'd love any feedback.

Sorry, there's quite a few of them, I just couldn't decide which ones to leave out.

nice shooting. I do like them quite a bit.
You said fashion photography though, and then asked for feedback so heres some.
firstly though, by fashion photography do you mean shooting for sales? or just artistic shots?
also, just to warn you, I get extremely critical of really small stupid things in photography. im my career, if I dont completely scrutinize every single photo of my work, and find every little inconstancy, I may not get the next job, so just a warning.

First one: I love her pose, I love her hair, the dress, everything except for two details. whats with the shoes? they dont really work with the dress or the environment? I think it would look great with either bare feet or white flipflops. also, whats with the blue bracelet shes wearing?

second: great shot, but again, whats with the bracelet?

third: awesome photo, no complaints

forth: nice movement shot, but really, its completely killed by the shoes in the foreground. the dress shes wearing works so well with the field, heres this girl in the comfortable light flowing dress, free in this large field to relax and have fun, and there here in the front there are these white and black shoes just chilling out.

fifth through seventh: awesome shots, love them.

the rest of them: I can see the idea your going for, and I like it a lot, but the lighting is all wrong to me. I understand her being in some darkness and everything, and that makes a lot of sense, but I just dont think her positioning works for what you can see. sorry, I really dont know how to describe it that well...it just doesnt work for me.

again, I'm sorry if I kind of over did this.

I would just crop the bottom of that photo out. Lose the shoes, plus that patch of dirt at the bottom.

I think that the idea of these shots was good, but while the lighting (IMHO) isn't all wrong, I think a bit different angle would make a huge difference. Maybe move to the right, so the window isnt in the frame. That whole window is blown right out..

I'd like to see a more intense light for more dramatic highlights, and try to really make the red of the dress more prominent. Also, the scene is just way too busy.. maybe move the model (is that you?) forward so she is larger in the frame. I'd even go for less depth of field to sort of soften the rest of the scene a bit more. :)

I have to agree with everyone else, the lighting in the second set is just wrong. If it was the furniture you were photographing they would be great because your attenton is really drawn to the room rather than the model.
And even though I'm sure I could never afford it I'd like to know what camera you're using.

Thanks for all your feedback guys, I see where you're all coming from, and in most cases, I agree. I'll keep everything in mind for my next set of photos.

re the blue bracelet: She went to some festival the weekend before and the ticket was that blue bracelet thing, so she was very reluctant to take it off (sentimental value or something).

moojoe: Are you a professional photographer? By fashion photography, I mean in the style of fashion photography, but the concept behind it is artistic, it's for my final high school major project for visual arts.

Luke: Unfortunately, that isn't me, although I wish I was as photogenic as her! I'm always the girl behind the camera, who never shows her face =P

For these photos I used my dad's Fujifilm Finepix S5500. It's almost an SLR camera, but not quite. I'm begging my parents for a proper digital SLR camera for christmas, but it's more likely they'll buy me a Finepix S5700 because we can't actually afford a proper SLR.

Elenril: No, I'm not. Im a freelance theatrical lighting designer and technical director. since im freelance, I have to take pictures of all of my work. when doing lighting design, its a big big deal to get the pictures just right since what im really doing is capturing the light, and not the subjects. when doing technical direction, I'm more focused on the sets and the buildings then the light or anything else. I use the photos for my portfolio then, which if I present well and the director and producers of the next production like my work, then I get the job. because of this Ive taken a fair amount of photography classes, and am fairly often getting better and better equipment so that I can (theoretically) get better jobs.

since you didnt even take the shots with an SLR, id say they are even better. while if you have the right eye, you can get a great shot with a horrible camera, even so, people are relying more and more on the amazing features of an SLR (i'm certainly one of those people). so for you to be able to do those shots without one, Id say you have some great great talent.

Nice shots. I think (and im no pro, just my opinion and what i like) that you should focus on your lighting, take time to get it right and use the light to bring out features and add some nice contrast into the shots.

But i like good lighting and high contrast in photos.

They're pretty damn Pr0 though :)

edit: Also some of the appear a little washed out, could be my monitor, the setup on this is a mess.. Maybe try a little adjustment of the saturation with Photoshop, we know you can do that.
Works for some but not for others, i like some of the results where i think they look a little desaturated though...

You could fix most of thoes photo's with PhotoShop.

Also through some black and white shots in the mix. It captures more detail and gives everything a better contrast and can improve lighting.

That odd colored braclet would appear normal in BW and you might come to the conclusion that her shoes might be blue or teal. Its a bit of trickory :P

I have to say, overall the pics look very good. I might be able to find little things to change but overall a great effort. But, it may be my screen, any of the dark photos dont really come in too well. I'll have to look when I get home on a good screen. I always thought fashion photography was supposed to be bright. Like the second post, second set. And I really like that last one.

Splendid photography these, friends I am an amateur photographer and am still learning the tricks of the trade. I can feel the splendor of these snaps and this also made me think of shooting some with my girlfriend. This can solve two purposes for me I can upload them here for your comments and if you people like them I can gift those snaps to her which she would like I am convinced. Thanks for inspiring me though.

BigJohnson: Even if you can only see little things to change, please post whatever you can think of, everything helps me improve. And fashion photography isn't always bright, but I suppose with this second set I strayed further from the fashion focus and took more artistic liberty.

When shooting black and white, you can set your black and white points with photoshop to make the picture have more (or less) contrast. Makes a biiiig difference. :)

This is the best one by far in my opinon...beautiful light...she almost looks as if she is a part of the tree...the colors come together perfectly! I really like your work! I was bitten by the photography bug a long time ago...I've been trying to build my own darkroom ever since!
