View Full Version : Building for a friend

I told a friend I would build him a rig. No custom work on it. I would just take as many parts from his old computer that he wants to 'upgrade' and buy a new case and put all of the new stuff in there. But I wanted to check this stuff with the only opinions I trust when it comes to computers. If you know where I can get any of this stuff cheaper or better for the same price as it is at newegg feel free to let me know. But there is very little I can reuse. Here it is:
Video Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121092)

MotherBoard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121049)

Ram (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146673)

Power Supply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817189005)

Sound Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102003)

I figureI can reuse the networking stuff and the hard drives. He doesn't really abuse the system like we do. But anything you can help with/have to add would be great. Thanks.

Also. I think I need a new copy of XP sp2. If anyone knows of a good deal anywhere, point me in that direction please.

Talk to a local computer shop. They can give you a good deal on a mobo _and_ an OEM version of XP for cheap. (the OEM version is only _legally_ distributable with a new system. A mobo is considered a new system to most folks (a stick of memory can be too ;) ))

so i take it hes not a huge gamer then/ overclocker?

Video Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121092) good card for price

MotherBoard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121049)
not sure, i have only really looked at the newest boards
Ram (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146673)
good ram but if your trying to save money muskin is a bit expensive, though looking through the ram it seems the other stuff is just as much for the same specs. also this ram has higher voltage rating so you can oc it more.
Power Supply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817189005)
that seems like alot of power for this system.
Sound Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102003)
not into sounds cards so not sure if its good or not.

i take it the proc is being reused?

If I didn't use the words overclock he would never have known there was such a thing.

Ah. I knew I was missing something. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115005)

Is that the cpu he already has? or something he is getting? Its the same cpu that I have, and although a great cpu, it hasn't lowered in price much in the past year and a half. For $15 more your better off getting this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115029). 800Mhz faster with a bigger cache.

And perhaps an upgrade to a P35 motherboard as it is much newer technology and supports future 45nm cpu's. You can find nice P35 motherboards for the same price/near that 965 board.

I agree with Nighttrain on both accounts - get the E6750 and a P35 or 680i. You'd probably be better off with the P35, since I doubt you'll need SLI, and it's one of the top chipsets out now.

ya thats why i wanted to know how much of a gamer he was. those parts are a bit old and if you can find a good p35/x38 board i would go for that.

Ok. I have decided to go with the processor you have suggested Nighttrain.
But this is going to be the new motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128059)
And the new power supply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153023)
And this is the case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811208013) he decided to go with.

Drive about 200 miles south near STL and I'll install it for FREE!

I would take you up on it, but only when I am ready to build my rig. My friend can pay for it. Selfish? Maybe. But 200 miles for a friends cpu. I don't think so. Where are you? Illinois StL or MO?

IL, 8 miles from STL

Cool. In my summer travel I have passed you. My aunt and uncle live in St Charles. I did stop at the brewery, which if I lived near I would be there every day off.

On the thread note, I have taken some progress pictures that I will post here. I have one little piece of custom work to do. When I figure how I going to deal with it I will post it here.
