The 24 hour waiting period begins Friday for the Mavericks surf contest.

For those that don't know, Mavericks is probably THE biggest wave contest in surfing. They are predicting 30'-40' (or more) wave faces! The surf is pounding so hard off the coast of Half Moon Bay right now, it is rattling windows 1/2 mile away. If you have never seen a 40' wave, it will put you in a state of awe even standing on the beach. I cannot even imagine riding one. The power of that wave is just incredible. It takes being towed by a jet ski just to catch it. There is even a story about the 100' wave... Just amazing.

Make sure and check out the slideshows from thanksgiving!

Oh and I admit it. My dice are not big enough to ride that monster!

The sheer power of the ocean is a terrifying thing. Those guys are nuts or just flat out dedicated... or both... to be out there, lol.

Pictures never do any justice. Luckily, I've been to the ocean a few times and have seen some pretty big waves. But nothing near 40', more like 10' at the most, maybe 12' if I'm lucky. So using that as a comparison, HOLY COW!

If I was paddling out to one of those monster waves, I'd become a female pretty fast...

I'd love to go watch though, it must be really cool! I once played around in 8' - 12' waves one time when it got super stormy around the lake over here, even that gave me the willies every now and then when I got a lil too close to them.

I was listening to the radio this morning when they did the "official" opening of the window announcement. They are having a celebratory paddle out later this morning _only_ if the waves stay below 50'!?!

They mentioned that anything over 50' requires being towed into the wave with a jet ski...
!!OVER 50'!!?? My voice rose an octave just thinking about it. The waves I rode in Hawaii were just under 20' and I think I left permanent foot prints in the board I had...

Once the contest begins, they are doing a live webcast _and_ they will be broadcasting it on the jumbotron at AT&T park in SF.

EDIT: BTW, body surfing is not much of an option unless you like to troll for great whites...

Kool! I just watched something like that on Discovery HD
I found this Video (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2eljy_60-ft-of-power_extreme) seems to be similar clips to the ones on tv.

i would go do it but there is jelly fish :)

it would be fun for sure but i'm not sure if i would jump right in, at least not without goggles and nose plug. but then you would look like a douche with that on, in comparison. th biggest waves i remember where maybe 3-4 feet tall (lake, don't remember which).

I didn't know regular waves got that big. I've heard of rogue waves being 50' or more but that's not something you can plan for. Anybody that surfs those things is absolutely nuts!
