OK, a little setup;

I have two gents here from Singapore for sgi origin 2000 training. They are fairly intelligent and knowledgeable about UNIX and Linux and what makes things work hardware wise.

I mentioned last night before I left for the day that we would be touching on raid setup and monitoring and they both looked at me like I just blurted something out in a strange Spanish dialect!?!?

Student #1; "What's raid?"
Me; ............?! Really?
???!!!???!!! WTF?!?!

These guys support one of THE most critical systems for the airport in Singapore and they do not know what raid is? The disk subsystem that contains all of the critical data is a raid box, they know nothing about. They do not even know how to tell if a drive is failing or even how to log into the system to check it. Good thing I am ahead of schedule so I can spend the next day and a half walking them through raid boxes...

RAID - Kills Bugs. Dead.

LOL I used that exact line and they also looked dumbfounded!

No wonder the cockroaches are happy in Singapore!

I love the communications gaps. I have been on the other end plenty of times in the past and expect to be in the same situation many times in the future. That is why I can laugh at it...

Different slant/rant/can't/

...so we have been taking them out to lunch this week as well. First day Pizza! too much bread for them. Second day, Chinese food! Ok for them, not enough flavor/spice, but happier. Third day, Pho! Some damn good Vietnamese noodle soup(plus other stuff depending on your likes), That was a hit and one of the guys added a TON of rooster sauce (not the real name, but I can not read vietnamese). He was in full sweat mode by the end of the meal and was happy.

I asked them how they liked Mexican food since they like spicy food. "What is Mexican food?"

Guess where I am taking them today?

Mexico?

Hehe, if we were close enough I would shuttle them across the border to Tijuana for some REAL Mexican food. Since I am so far north, they will have to settle for the local Mexico City style Mexican food joint.

I also asked them if they wanted to go out to dinner at a _nice_ restaurant, but they didn't bring the right clothes... I suppose I could ask the Maître d' to provide jackets...

They did mention the Kit Kat club. Not my cup of tea, so I pointed them in the right direction.

Update;

Took them to a decent Taqueria for lunch and took me 1/2 an hour to explain the menu. One guy ordered a Chili Relleno with shrimp and the other Chili Colorado. Both were pleasantly surprised and cleaned their plates. I did have to explain "Frijoles Refritos" though and they were worried about what to expect. Like I said, both plates were cleaned. I so enjoy watching people enjoy a good meal.
