hey guys. Just a few quick questions. I am going to be modding an
antec 900 case (The OSU 900, check it out in Idea Zone :D) and wanted
to wc maybe. it seems that the only thing it will support is a single 120mm
rad. Will that be enough to cool a CPU and GPU? Me thinks no. :neutral:
If the answer is indeed no, then is it possible to mount a dual 120 in the
front drive bays or would that just blow hot air into the case?
Here is a list of parts if you need it:
Antec 900 case
Danger Den Copper TDX 775 block (1/2in.)
Black Ice Pro I (or II) Rad (1/2in)
PrimoFlex 1/2in tubing (8-10 feet)
Danger Den DD-CPX1 Pump (needs 1/2 fittings)
Primochill PC Ice Blood Red Coolant
Custom OSU Rad (old ext. HD)

Mod it. You've got space on the bottom, top, front areas like you mentioned and outside the case on the back.
No matter which place you have it inside the case its going to add warm air to the case less it is an exhaust.
And two feet of tubing is not going to be anywhere near enough. Even in a tight mid-tower case like that I would still pick up atleast 7+ feet perhaps more. Always good to have more than you think you need, on top of the fact that tubing is rather inexpensive.

Yeah, no way will 2 feet be enough. I have 10ft. here right now. As for a dual rad, I have a 120.2 and a 120.1 rad myself. One will be mounted on my 120mm fan spot, and the 120.2 is mounted on the top. Check out my worklog for pics, they might help.

To Maleficus - i think you misunderstood what i meant by a dual 120 rad. I meant ONE rad with 2 120mm fans.
To Nightrain - i think i might go ahead and try to mount one up front if i get around to shelling out the cash for a WC system. either that or i could have two 120 singles with one on the rear fan and one modded to exhaust out the little tray in the top of the case. Either that or i will cut out the 3.5 drive bays (if i need to) and mount it behind there. This is all speculation of course.

The 120.1 is referring to the smaller radiators that support one 120mm fan, whereas the 120.2 is referring to the dual that you speak of. He just has both in his rig.

thermo chill uses the 120.1, 120.2, and 120.3 for there sizes where as swiftech goes like this; 120, 220, 320.

Bingo. I have 2 rads, 1 which is a 120 supporting 1 fan (120.1) and one which supports 2 fans (120.2), also called 220, 120.2, 120x2, but all meaning the same thing.
And either way, it seems you're only WC'ing the CPU, so you don't need one anyways. That's why I have 2 rads; I'm having my graphics card and north bridge on one rad, and my CPU and south bridge on another.

oh right i forgot to put a possible GPU block in there in case i
get an 8800 GT for christmas :santa:. Would a single 120 rad
be enough to cool a CPU and GPU?

Then there is another rad on top for the GPU/GPUs (if necessary) and the
pump will be mounted in the bottom of the case.

no, you will need a bigger rad and or second rad for a cpu/gpu(2). what processor are you going with again?

well currently i have a C2D 6300, and i wont get one again until the nehalems
come out at the end of 2008 or early 2009. As for the gpu, ill most likely have
only 1 8800 GT 256 for awhile if i get one for christmas :santa:. I kinda thot
that a single rad would be too little. What about the dual singles like in my pics
or hanging a 120.2 on a radbox off the back? Would that block my pci cards in
the back? Im just trying to get an idea of what would work with this case and
system

since you play to get the new intels and i assume water cool them too then i would get at least a double 120mm rad if not triple. quads put out alot of heat and there are only two water blocks that really handle them with good temps. the Dtek Fuzion and Swiftech GTX are great blocks for quads.
i always recommend the following system for quads and a single/double gpu setup. it is't a bit pricey but you will have to spend the money for a good quality setup.

i looked at a triple 120 in sketchup and it was almost as tall as the case so idk
about that. thats a toughie. if you forgot, its the antec 900 which is 19.4 iches
tall and a triple rad is about 15 inches so not much room to spare. grrrrr.:evil:
so frustrating. i want comfortable temps but if a 120x2 rad is barely enough then
i have to get a 120x3... :think:

Its only a 6300 and a 8800GT, im cooling a Q6600 overclocked to 3.3 and a 8800GTX overclocked to 630 core. With a 120x2 and a 120 rad, so roughly a 120x3 but the 120 is dual pass so techinically a 120x4, you shouldn't need more than a 120x2 and a single 120 to keep that lot cool.

Thanks for the heads up, but this is more of a future plan to
W/C. By that time i will (hopefully) have an Intel Nehalem quad
core, which will be hotter than the 6300. So i kinda want this to
be a forward-thinking project and get enough to support the quad.

Im not sure that will be 45nm it will have to be damn quick to put out as much heat as a 6300. who knwos though.

Are E6300s really hot? I have one and it idles around 27-29C
with an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro. :?

well then you could probably hit 4.5GHz on water for a 24/7 use with the 45nm.

AFAIK it doesn't work like that as most rads are dual pass. the MCR320 can handle a quad and 8800card at pretty good temps and it leave enough room to oc both.
for the e6300 and a 8800GT you can easily get away with a MCR220 IMO. but if he is going to have a quad then why not spend the extra 10 or so on a MCR320 and have that much more headroom.

I have something that may help you with your rad placement.

Same case as you. You can't see where the 240mm rad was placed but in sits in the front drive bays. I have the whole article in magazine form and I will try to take some pics of the installation process for you. Fairly simple mod.
If you mount the radiator the same way as is mounted in this mod you can add a 120mm radiator on the rear exhaust fan and everything will be great.
EDIT: I found this 900 with only a 120mm radiator, I would recommend a 120mm and a 240mm radiator. I am doing that for my 8800GTX and Q6600. You can never have enough cooling power and it gives you room to upgrade your gear.

Not entirely true my aussie friend.
He has to make sure that his pump is up to it. If he puts too many radiators and blocks in there then the restriction will keep the water from flowing quick enough to adequately cool the system.

That is true, I never looked at the pump he was getting though. I am running a CPU and GPU block with a 120mm and 240mm radiator of a DD Mag II LE.
