This is from an Imax movie I saw, or at least I'm pretty sure it is. It was filmed in Hawaii. The cameraman was in a helicopter, which was piloted by an ex-Vietnam pilot. The waves were big enough that you could pick up a three story house and put it between two waves, and the waves would still be taller, and they would not touch the house. In the movie I saw, the camera got below the surfer many times. The crew on the beach said that they would watch the helicopter disappear between the waves, and the pop back out a minute later.

Crazy stuff.

It's actually illegal to surf out there now because too many people have died. It's fairly far out in the ocean, I forget off what coast, but it's a big ass reef.
