As topics states brought a friend brought a seagate 160gb IDE hdd and it recognizes it in bios but not in windows....never had problems like this before as his system used to be mine..... there are no shunt offs on the jumpers on the back would that cause the problem.

Thanks in Advance

Go into the Control Panel -> go under Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management.

You should see the hard drive there and then you can format it to be used as extra storage and such.

I had this same problem when I got a SATAII HDD for my old computer which I was selling. I found that you have to make a boot disk with the driver on it which loads before windows would install. In the end I took the SATAII HDD back and got another IDE, only problem is now I can't find a buyer lol. I will try to find my original thread for you, it had instructions for how to make the boot disk.

EDIT: Here is the link to my thread.

EDIT: Looks like Dan posted before me. If windows is installed and just won't recognize the HDD he is right, you have to format it so windows will recognize it. You also have to do this if you make four own external HDD enclosure, the HDD needs to be formatted before it will work. I found this out the hard way ;).

I just found this, it may solve your problem but I will keep searching.

EDIT: Sorry buddy, that's all I can find at the moment. Everything I look up tells you to do it the way Dan said but you can't do it that way so I am stuck with ideas.

yeah they are fine everything in that part is working

but the original reason he brought it down before he got the hdd is that it has been hanging at the windows splash screen.... everytime he brings it down (1 1/2 hour drive) we plug in and its fine doesnt hang or anything, any suggestions.

You may also want to try a repair installation of windows. You just boot off the windows disk (I THINK, you may want to check this first) and select repair. This should add missing files and fix errors without you losing your data.
