Project Lockbox

So I have two dismantled DVD drives from when I was making that laser flashlight. One of them is broken, but the newer, smaller one still works fine. What I plan on doing with it is ripping and cutting out as much of the inside as I can, and plating it all with a few layers of steel sheet metal. I have some aluminum already, but plan on buying some steel like next week, and that would be much better.

I'll be able to hide valuable items within it. I'm going to make it so it can only be opened by a person logged on to the computer. The button on the front will have to go. So basically, the entire inside will be a steel box that I can put stuff in.





So, here's the drive

I started by removing the tray, and cutting out the midle of it to make more room for the hiding place inside.

So I unplugged it from the rest of the drive, hooked up up to my computer, and was able to power on the gears still.

And that gives me a lot more room inside.

Now, what I plan to do is make a fake front to it. I took off the front part of the tray, and I'm goingto glue it to the front part of the drive. The back of it will be steel plated, and the entire thing will pop out when opened. This is just to create the illusion that it's a real drive, to fool any thief.

It's all glued together now, and I cut off the tabs on the back of it to make more of a surface to put the steel.

Right now I'm basically just waiting until I can get some steel. I'll also spend this time working out the finer details about how this will be constructed. I had an idea from looking at a lock. I could take multiple layers of steel, and rivet them together from extra strong panels.

I'm not fully sure yet on what I'm going to do. As you can see here, I have plenty of space inside.

But because of all of the mechanics in the front, I only have as much space as the maximum height of the tray, as outlined here.

Now, I could just build it around the tray space, and this would still leave plenty of room to hide money and jewelery, and even a USB flash drive. Or I could try to think of something else, and be able to hide bigger things in it.
