I need a utility that can convert videos from one format and into another. Does anybody know of a good (and preferably free) one?

Any others out there that you guys recommend?

VLC player can convert damn near anything to anything, and its free. Look into that one.. I used it to convert an h264 into a wmv to play on the xbox360. :)

Xilisoft works well for DVD to PSP for me I think they offer a few things for one format to another but I've never tried them out.

I use ffmpeg (http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/) and mplayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu). I haven't used the windows versions, but on my linux box they work well.

I hadn't used VLC until recently, but now I wonder why I hadn't. That program is excellent and can do so many things that windows media player can't. I didn't even know it can convert formats, can it join two avi's into one?

For windows I'd suggest MediaCoder ( http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ ), it's easy to use and open-source. It converts from just about anything to just about anything. I use it to convert videos to play on my ZEN. I thought it could combine files, but I can't seem to get it to do that now.
