I'm interested in doing a few case mods (mainly just straight paint jobs) and was wondering if there is any case people would recommend in particular? Or should any decent case be fine?

Any case will be fine, for your first time, buy cheap or get it for free. (craiglist/friends/trash day)

Everyone is bound to mess up, and usually it's when they first start out.
Good news is, practice makes perfect, bad news is, sanding is a pain in the ass, and painting isnt the funnest thing to do, especially when you do several coats and find out something went wrong..

Good Luck

Agreed ^^
Try and get a free case, paint it, cut a window and fill it with LEDs! (well thats what I did anyway :p)

Any case will be fine. If you want to start with a good base Antec and Lian Li cases are great.

The Ultra Wizard (http://www.ultraproducts.com/product_details.php?cPath=13&pPath=250&productID=250) is a Good starter case. You can find it on ebay for around $30

My personal favorite on the cheap end of the spectrum is the CoolerMaster Centurion 5. It costs around 40-50 bucks new and is great to build with too.
