I had some time to brainstorm what casemod to build when I would buy my new PC. Then I came up with the idea to a build Tiberian Sun NOD casemod. So I went on Google and came across a number of nice pictures of the temple of NOD. This person has made a number of graphical images the temple or NOD for the Westwood Company.

Thank you cybergooch (http://www.cybergooch.com)

http://download.diecyde.com/ton/various/nodtemple.jpg

When I looked at the images I just HAD to make it.

The Next step was to plan what to do with the design.
I wanted to add some really nice Features in my mod, never seen before and wanted to build much of the stuff myself.
As I am an electrical engineer I just had to make most of the electronic designs myself.

I wanted to have a top end PC in this case mod with water cooling systems.
I first made some templates and did some calculations, from this I came to believe it would be very hard to integrate the water cooling and the PC system into one case because of its inefficient curves.

I then started thinking about making a second mod to place next to the temple.

I came up with another cool building : the obelisk of light.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/various/obelisk.jpg
This building incinerates tanks and units in the game.
I wanted to place the water cooling systems in this building and create a WORKING laser in it.
With this laser I want to make some laser shows like projecting the NOD logo in some sort of 3D rotating image.

In their own rights these are 3 big projects to manage but even that was not enough for me some months later when I had most of the shapes cut into foam, I got the idea to make the Tiberian sun flame tank (devils tongue).
Capable of throwing real flames and grinding stuff to pieces.

http://download.diecyde.com/ton/various/flametank.jpg

This Is how I managed to create 4 big projects into one.
And to keep this forum fairly readable I tried to split the projects into Pieces.

I hope this will prevent most misunderstanding's, If you have any questions, just ask me and I'll try to explain it the best I can.

It can also take a while before all pages are translated from dutch to English, because I posted all my progress before on GOT (http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1126281)
(first post april 13 2006)
jdbnsn is helping me with the translations.
hereby thank you!

I hope you will enjoy the mod !

Awesome! Glad to see you are posting this, I think these folks are going to love the final result. I apologize for not getting the translation done sooner but it's a slow process and the fact that I had it 75% done and lost all my progress makes it hard to get motivated to work on it. I still have it broken up into 8 more files of various sizes and I'll finish the rest asap. Welcome to TBCS!

Update 1 - Temple of NOD - december 27 2007

The first designs, templates and cut outs.

I based the design on the above pictures. This had to be done so that it would be a reasonably good computer and the design would not impede it’s functionality. During the designing of the project I encountered the following problems:

• Where do I put the DVD-rom?
• How high must the building be to accommodate a pc?
• Where could I use the tower for?
• Where will I place the components of the computer?

The beginning:

It was time to start on the casemod and not worry about the above problems for the time being. So I will solve the problems at a later stage of the building process. For the material, I wanted to use polyester because almost all forms can be shaped from it. For the DVD-rom problem I had devised a reasonable solution, I would like to attach the inner shell which resides in the front of the mod(the thing which resembles some sort of mouth) to My DVD-rom player.
Then if you would touch this inner scale, the DVD rom should open so you can load a DVD.

I made the casemod 16cm high, so the whole model must 90x60x16cm (L x W x H) to be proportional . This may be quite large in size, but it will be pretty faithful to the original design.

Since the glue dries rather slow, (12 hours), I could only glue 1 plate per day. This is very slow because most types of foam react very badly to solvents. But anyway, I got started with the tools that I had, these are the tools I used:
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/various/tools.jpg

-Beer (one of my primary labour agreements ;) )
-polystyrene foam
-glue
-hand-held soldering iron (to slice/melt the foam)
-serrated loaf knife (thanks mom, now you know where I got that)
-shack knife

I used the serrated knife to shape this:
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t1.jpg

The reason I chose the this high density foam is because it’s easy to cut and shape. The bad part is that this it is more expensive than polystyrene foam

Here we have the glue:
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/various/lijm.jpg

All right, we are ready so let’s begin making the first shapes in the material. I placed the plate on the ground and will draw the shapes on this:
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t2.jpg

Here it is after I have cut out first the plate with the razor along the lines. Then on another plate, I’ll draw the same shape and glue them together.
In the photo below you can see I glued 4 foam plates, each 4 cm thick on top of each other.
As you can see that the base of the temple has already been made. So the foam is up to approximately 16 cm thick had trouble difficulty getting the shapes cut.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t3.jpg

As you can see have I added extra foam and have not yet cut it to size...especially with the front and the rear. I have used this picture as a good reference of the temple to make sure that the dimensions do not deviate from the original design.

http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t4.jpg
Here I have I used the serrated knife to shape the widest parts of the sides (where it needs to be rounded). And then with the sanding machine I made nice round edges. I haven’t sanded all of the corners down to size yet to leave room for adjustments (It gets easier from there)

http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t5.jpg
When gluing I had forgotten the last piece on the rear top there needs to be a space that fits another structure, but it will still fit. So I cut out the space and glued another piece of foam in the space as you can see.

http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t6.jpg
The hardest part of this free style modeling is to keep the model symmetrical.

I would like to show off my self designed tool here:
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t7.jpg
This is my soldering iron which hold a metal piece bent into the shape I wish to cut.
This kind of cutting is one of the things I like about foam.

This youtube movie shows how easy it is to model with this iron
G75_XXbdcnU

With the sander I grind down all uneven area's on the model, I use fine sanding paper with this foam about P140.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t8.jpg

I placed a small scale model on top to compare the shape and see how true to the original I have remained.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t9.jpg

I have been sitting here with the soldering iron under the scale model slicing out sections until I get just the right depth. And as well as in-scale, I have also been rounding the edges to see how even it is.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t10.jpg

So it looks approximately true to the original shape of the model.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t11.jpg

I now remove the scale because this is going to be part of the template (this is much harder than the other parts to keep in correct shape).
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t12.jpg

Then in the place where the scale I removed even more material keeping nice smooth margins everywhere using the soldering iron in the middle of the outer scale and melted out a small area to match the shape in the drawing...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t13.jpg

Here is the model again completely smooth and polished to the texture that was desired.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t14.jpg
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t15.jpg

I have also polished the other side now, in the picture there is the top portion which sits on top, I not exactly sure how I am going to make this. That will still depend a little on the tower.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t16.jpg

Here I have glued 3 pieces of foam on top of each other with the intention of cutting out a space here and later fit the temple of NOD tower.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t17.jpg

With the soldering iron I have sliced the foam just outside the marked edges of the tower so it will be easier to go back and trim the fine details later.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t18.jpg

This picture shows how the shape of the tower will look, it will be a lot thinner when the shaping continues. I don’t know how the top should be made.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t19.jpg

END OF The first designs, templates and cut outs. part 1

As for that temple, that one is from Tiberium dawn.
Tiberium sun is its successor.

I think that swedish guy did his job pretty good but I like the Tiberium Sun temple of NOD design better.

@jdbnsn

Yes most translations are pretty good, I needed to do some shifting here and there and there were some typos but its was pretty straight forward.

anywho, on to the mod: I like it so far. I don't care if it's been done before (although admittedly a different generation of NOD was done), I still can't wait to see your approach.

Update 1 - Obelisk of Light - January 2 2008

The first designs, templates, cut outs and molds.

I made some cut-outs in foam to decide what measurements to take for the obelisk.
This are the pieces of foam it will be created out of.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o1.jpg

transferring a drawing on the foam before I'll cut it out.
I tried to get the look of the in-game design, sadly there was a lack of good high res designs of the obelisk.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o2.jpg

The design after it was cut out.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o3.jpg

After some cutting and sanding this is the result , as you can see it is about 42 cm wide.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o4.jpg

Now cutting out the obelisk tower.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o5.jpg

This is how it looks on top of the base
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o6.jpg

I cut out the lower part of the tower, I am waiting a bit with the top part because I am still not so sure how to obtain the best result.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o7.jpg

This is how I cut it out, I am not so pleased with the result at this state, later I'll redesign a better looking top.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o8.jpg

To protect the foam from the epoxy and to obtain a good smooth surface I am plastering the model.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o9.jpg

It is pretty rough at this state, the plaster takes about 4 hours to dry.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o10.jpg

How it looks after it has been sanded
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o11.jpg

Also the tower has to be done.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o12.jpg

I sadly lost some pictures here but this is the new redesigned tower, plastered and done.
I like this design way better
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o13.jpg

After I rubbed on bee wax on the model (so it will release easily at a later state) it was time for the gel coat.
This is a sort of soft smooth top layer before you start laminating with epoxy.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o14.jpg

The tower and the base after they had been laminated and cured.
These will form the negative molds in which I will create the true obelisk.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o15.jpg

Now removing the foam.
I like the hammer part ;)
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o16.jpg

It is a lot of foam...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o17.jpg

Now I am removing the last parts of plaster which still reside in the mold, the goal is to get the molds as smooth as possible.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o18.jpg

As it is impossible to release the future tower from its mold in the old state it had to be cut in 2 parts.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/obelisk/o19.jpg

The next step is to create the results using my new molds.
These pictures will be shown in the next update.

Update 1 - Devil's Tongue Flame Tank - 2 February 2008

As I told before, I wanted to make a cool robot which could run on its own and be able to do some cool stuff.

So I came up with the cool Devil's Tongue flame tank, As you might suspect the thing will be able to throw some real large flames
http://www.cybergooch.com/images/tibsunarchive/flm_e040.jpg

I started with making a cardboard model and creating the basic model with it.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/1.jpg

It will have to accommodate at least one battery, I prefer even more.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/3.jpg

Time to Start on the tank, It will be crafted out of Aluminum because It has to withstand flames.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/4.jpg

This case can house 2 batteries easily...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/5.jpg

Creating the back of the tank, at the top the motors will be positioned.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/6.jpg

This is how it looks with the lid on.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/7.jpg

The front attached...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/8.jpg

and a view from the back...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/9.jpg

I am sawing a raw block of aluminum, this will become the drive train.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/10.jpg

After some milling and fitting, there are 2 45 degree gears installed, 2 bearings and a motor.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/11.jpg

You can see them run in these movies:
i0HevhSIIbk
_lnVRX6Vnr0

I ordered track at conrad, it looks very nice :D
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/12.jpg

And from the back...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/13.jpg

I milled small blocks to hold the shafts
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/14.jpg

Next it was up to create and test some flame throwers.
Milling some aluminum...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/16.jpg

This will become the inner nozzle of the flame thrower.
This part is critical to a good flame thrower as it will create a vacuum to pull in liquid fuel and then mix that together.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/17.jpg

almost done, just have to cut it now.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/18.jpg

This part is used to connect an air hose.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/19.jpg

The boring isn't as critical as it was with the inner nozzle.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/20.jpg

Just need to cut it now.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/21.jpg

The flame thrower assembled...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/22.jpg

The flame thrower in exploded view
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/23.jpg

You can see the inner nozzle good here
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/24.jpg

Ahh my pyromaniac setup.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/25.jpg

I shot some movies of mixtures with different fuel and pressure mixes.
you can see them here.
the largest flame I achieved was about 3 meters long.

4 BAR spiritus:
vNO9muWb5gc

7 BAR spiritus:
e5bhrNA5iiw

4 BAR lamp oil
ecHsS1bQZCs

4 BAR Thinner
FrcP3ZMqlFU

7 BAR thinner
kN1BRT8_rUc

I Did some more experiments with gasoline but That was too crazy to show, The only thing you see is flame :D
But You could say I can use pretty much any flammable liquid.

More to come SOON :D:twisted:

that is really freaking cool. my only questions about the flame tank though are,
It looks like your gear ratios for the track are a little small, you sure you'll get enough from them to actually move the thing with all the weight without blowing circuit breakers?

and with the flamer, just because I'm a safety guy in my job, you have any anti blowback mechanism installed in the device? or what about an automated cutout/extinguisher thing?

Update 2 - Temple of NOD - January 10 2007

further sanding, plastering and making the molds

I got rid of the square look , by removing some of the sides and then sanding it down.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t20.jpg

This is how it looks on top of the rest.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t21.jpg

Here I cut away some foam to create nice curves as seen in the pictures.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t22.jpg

Then I removed the parts where the windows would be.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t23.jpg

You can see the back of the model here.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t24.jpg

This foam has one drawback, It reacts to epoxy resin so I have to protect it.
I do this by applying a layer of plaster.
I use various roughnesses of plaster, I begin with the roughest as the base layer.
You can see the mix here.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t25.jpg

I am smearing it all over the model.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t26.jpg

Now letting it dry ... it dries soooo slow:mad:
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t27.jpg

Showing the side of the mod.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t29.jpg

And the back.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t30.jpg

Now that's dry I apply a thin layer of plaster on the bottom of the model, just to be sure.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t31.jpg

now It is covered, this method has one other advantage, It makes the edges of the model stronger and thus the model better to handle later.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t32.jpg

Now again my friend the sanding paper... It has to be as smooth as possible because this model will transfer anything that is not smooth into the negative mold, I'll make from it.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t33.jpg

And now showing the back
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t34.jpg

Now the model is smooth I am covering it in bee wax to guarantee an easy release when my negative mold of fiber glass is hard.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t35.jpg

This is an intensive job as I have to rub every part for some time for the smoothest result.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t36.jpg

the tower and the inner beck has to be done too :D
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t37.jpg

Now we are mixing Gel coat, this is some sort of epoxy resin with the difference that this is softer so you can easily sand it later.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t38.jpg

adding the activator part.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t39.jpg

And now it is time to apply the stuff on my molds, this process has to be repeated 2 or 3 times.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t40.jpg

waiting to dry.. ready in about 30 minutes...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t41.jpg

Next step is applying the real fiber glass and the resin.
This is a batch of resin, be careful of the amount of activator :D
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t42.jpg

Now I tare off small pieces of fiber glass and drown it in resin, it is better to use smaller parts of fiber glass as this will make is easier to remove air bubbles.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t43.jpg

A foto of the mold covered in fiber glass.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t44.jpg

And now again for the whole picture.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t45.jpg

As I have a difficult mold which can not be released in one piece, I had to divide the mold in 6 pieces.
I did this with a normal saw.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t46.jpg

another piece :D, I can tell you this process hurts if you spent 3/4 year modeling the Styrofoam plug :D
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t47.jpg

releasing the actual negative mold.

well THERE is your problem :D
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t51.jpg

The inner beak's negative mold.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t52.jpg

I attached wooden blocks to my mold's pieces and bolted that together.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t53.jpg

The old foam blocks... useless now..
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t54.jpg

To get the correct shape again I build a skeleton around the mold to tension the pieces.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t55.jpg

These wires are pulling certain parts of the mold into shape. (can be adjusted with a bolt)
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t56.jpg

This is how it looks now, almost ready...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t57.jpg

Now again I coated the mold with gel coat, this also fills up the gaps so it can be sanded later.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t58.jpg

Another layer of Blue gel coat with on top the first layer of fiber glass.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/temple/t59.jpg

YEEEHAAA my temple released from its negative molds, now just some sanding and we are done :D

How do You like this?

This is surely not the first time you do this?
Simply amazing model!

It is not the first time I worked with these materials, but it is the first time ever I tried to make a mold with a mold of foam.
And my sponsor supplied me with materials and some knowledge, but with this mod even their knowledge often wasn't enough.

So we did some trial and error, but eventually we got a nice result.

Update 2 - Devil's Tongue Flame Tank - 15 april 2008

I am so sorry it took this long, I had some problems with my internet provider which had to be resolved first (they took out my adsl for about 3 months).

I also was pretty occupied with my faforite sport:
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/oostenrijk.jpg

But now I am back with another update.
I first want to thank for putting my mod in the modcast! thank you!

Now to the point, I promised a update on the tank, and here it is!

I did a lot of work on the shredder of the tank, I has a lot of custom component which had to be milled out of aluminium.

First I wanted to position the the spikes with the right spacing, so I marked it.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b1.jpg

Now I bent a strip of aluminium around the tube so I have the correct angle of the spikes.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b2.jpg

And with a permanent marker I marked the positions where the pins whould be drilled.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b3.jpg

I then cut a strip of aluminium where the tubes could be mounted on.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b4.jpg

I mounted the strip on the table so I could make it round.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b5.jpg

the milling in progress.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b6.jpg

Now you can see the difference between the strips.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b7.jpg

This is how it looks, next to the tube.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b8.jpg

And here with both strips rounded.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b9.jpg

the strips need to hold a bearing, so i milled those holes too.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b10.jpg

This foto shows the bearing mounted in the aluminium strip.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b11.jpg

And here with both bearings mounted in the strips.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b12.jpg

I also have a thicker strip of aluminium which eventually will be mounted to the tank and where the small strips can be attached to.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b13.jpg

This thicker strip will house 2 bearings instead of one because the wheel driving system will be mounted in it.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b14.jpg

You see the bearings mounted in this picture.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b15.jpg

Now I am making a space for the smaller strip where it can be mounted on to.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b16.jpg

Here the small strips are mounted on the larger one.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b17.jpg

You can see the drive system mounted.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b18.jpg

and once again with a example shaft.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b19.jpg

I needed some special large gears so the tubes would rotate against each other.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b20.jpg

milling, the block of aluminium with a special module.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b21.jpg

as you can see it starts to look like a real gear.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b22.jpg

I made two slices, one for each tube.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b23.jpg

It will be mounted like this, the size is chosen just right for enough space to accomodate the spikes.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b24.jpg

The same picture zoomed out.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b25.jpg

The wheel needs a centerin hub where onto the rest could be mounted.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b26.jpg

And centering a hole in the gear.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b27.jpg

Here the hub and the gear attached to each other.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b28.jpg

Here is a shot of both tubes mounted to each other.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b29.jpg

And here I have it positioned to its future position.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b30.jpg

The holes for the spikes need to be threaded so the spikes can be mounted firmly.
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b31.jpg

I make the spikes on my lathe, they are really sharp
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b32.jpg

the first one... (of 500) :)
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b33.jpg

You can see it take shape here...
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b34.jpg

and here with about a half tube finished, to indicate its destructiveness, when I lay this on my hand, I feel the spikes piercing my skin :)
http://download.diecyde.com/ton/tank/b35.jpg

I hope you enjoyed my new update and I hope to make a new one soon.

Hello there, I have built a new toy for in the Temple Of NOD.
A smoke generator, I want to shoot this smoke out of the beak of the casemod.
This apparatus works on 12 volts and is able to produce this amount of smoke continuously!.

I have just a few small things to change on the smoke generator and that is making 2 plugs to compress the liquid, this makes the smoke a lot better.

Hope you enjoy it :D

Hello People,

My last post is a long time ago now,
You might think I've stopped with my case-mod.
This I quite true for the moment, As I had a fire in my workshop and part of the case-mod has been burnt down :(

But shed no tears, I have been reconstructing my workshop and enhancing it.
After I am done with this project I will again focus to the C&C tiberian sun casemod.

For the people who want to see what happened, I dedicated a page to it on my site. (http://www.diecyde.com/?pid=27)

Anyway on picture 2 you can clearly see the obelisk of licht has been burnt allmost completely.

I'll keep you all updated when I am restarting this project...

Finally after a VERY long time, I am again here to post some progress to the project.

After the fire in my workshop I made up a list of projects and in which order I wanted to finish them.
The Flame Tank , including all its electronics, mechanics and software. to make it even harder we made up some nice new killer features to add to it.
The temple of nod was severely damaged by the fire but fortunately the scale of the temple was not burnt (only smoke damage)
But the airbrush needs to be redone.
further the baseplate on which the scale rests has been severely burnt, the pc is also a goner.
This restoration has been put on the long run unfortunately. We made this choice because we wanted to compete with the flame tank in a match of autonomous robots>> fieldrobot (http://www.fieldrobot.nl/)...
The Idea of this match is to let a robot navigate by itself through a cornfield while spraying weeds on its way through the field.
The weeds have to be detected by object recognition.
User interference results in penalties.

Our other objectives still stand (the tank should be controllable by the Temple of NOD), This will be done through Bluetooth.

Anyway lets get started....
http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image003.JPG

As you can see the components have some nasty smoke damage, I cleaned all before reattaching the components(paint doesn't stick to smoke :D)

In my last post you probably would have noticed the gears I created, I wasn't satisfied by their performance so I removed those and bought a new set of motors to be integrated INTO the wheels themselves.
http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image016.JPG

These are the new type of motors I use, the have planetary gearboxes, so the axle is in the center.

You probably notice the black piece of plastic, this is an insulator to isolate the wheels from the arms(I use an electric axle because the motor itself rotates in the wheel)
http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image011.JPG

This is the creation of the isolator where the motor get attached to.

http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image014.JPG

As you can see it slides in like this.

http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image017.JPG

The motors then get attached to the arms like you can see.

http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image020.JPG

When all is attached it kinda looks like this :D, WAY better then the previous configuration with the outside gears.

I created a movie, proving it works :D
CRlipJzey7M

Next part was the creation of the arms which would be holding the flame throwers.

http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image000.JPG

I cut some pieces of 10 mm thick aluminum for this.

And after some milling and grinding... this is the result.
with an servo already attached.
http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image018.JPG

This servo will be used to control the arm.

Next up was the flame thrower...
As you could have seen in previous posts I designed my own flame thrower.
I have taken this concept further as I wanted to ignite the liquid material on the fly when it rushes out.

So I made some simple electronics with an ancient 555 chip and hooked up a sparc coil.
http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image004.JPG

This resulted with amazingly good results.
The pulse will be continuously at around 15KHZ.
This generates a sparc of nearly 6 mm!!!

Next up was the flamethrower itself.
The major problem with the ignition is, it needs a good insulator.
http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image006.JPG

First I made a raw design and then tested with various insulators
http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image007.JPG

This is with the insulator attached.

http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image008.JPG

This is the flamethrower.

http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image009.JPG

Here you can see the various parts in the flame thrower

Next up was to fit the flame thrower in the arm itself.
http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image021.JPG

You can see it take shape slowly.

Sadly I don't have any pictures of me welding the top of the tank with an aluminum plate (with my new toy an AC/DC TIG welder :D:bunny:)

But I do have some of the fabrication of the top cap , which is made out of 1mm Stainless steel sheet metal.
http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image024.JPG

I need to practice a lot, but this is a good learning project

http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image026.JPG

You can see the nice curve...
http://www.diecyde.com/files/projects/ton/tank/Image027.JPG

and now cut down to size

Now for some nice pictures :D

Hehe, me too...
But I am waiting a bit till the tank is airbrushed, cleaning all the meat from the teeth seems like a challenging task to me :bunny:
But in time I will do that too.

And for the specs lovers:
all the electronics which will go into the tank:

4 optical distance sensors
electronic compass
2 webcams (1.3MP)
GPS sensor
bluetooth
(later also UMTS)
2 driving motors
2 grinding wheel motors
2 special motors to move the grinder arms up-and-down
4 servo's to position the flame thrower arms
2 valves for liquids
2 valves for air
2 sparc coils
compressor
pressure sensor(max 10 bar)
Display with controlling buttons
g sensorAll this is managed by 3 different devices
A motor print which controls all the motors with feedback sensors to ensure all motors are spinning at an exact set value.
A Main controller board which handles most of the sensors, excluding bluetooth, webcams and GPS sensor.
A 1.2 GHZ ARM linux board, this one processes the webcam images to detect objects and makes the main decisions for the tank.

The boards are linked to each other much like your brain is connected.
The linux board (contiousness) which makes the decitions bases on the information it harvests from its sensor board.
Then the linux board tells the other board where the tank must go.
The lower devices then handle the rest.
(if you walk you don't want to think about how you walk >> setting one feet after another << this is handled by a lower part in your brain)
We want to use the same principle.

Did I mention I have implemented an Bluetooth software driver for the PS3 sixaxis controller.
I can control the tank by the internal G-sensor.

I don't know what happened to all his pics, but he does have the worklog posted on a Dutch forum. Only problem is, well, it's in Dutch. I'll look around for him and see if I can find out what happened.

Wow, I just thought wtf when I seen the flame thrower lol crazy , the flame tank would kick a$$ in robot wars :D, awesome, and controlled by ps3 controller wow, just wow.

Wouldn't want to put my hand near that grinder neither, looks scary lethal , pictures from page 1 to 5 are showing, all the rest are not but the youtube vids are showing, I don't know why I have not checked this 1 out until now, I really should be checking out all of these featured worklogs, some truly amazing mods.

:) So is the flame tank serve as an anti theft device for the pc hehe .
