This is my first attempt at editing any sort of image. It's not that good but i felt like posting. I used GIMP because i can't afford photoshop and I don't want to use pirated software.

Here is the original.

I wanted to use it as my desktop but i got tired of looking at my bathroom in the background.

Here is the image after i cut her out and plopped her over a boring white background.

Then here it is after i tried to fix her arm over there on the left. it didn't turn out well.

I don't really know what to do with it now. I want to find something to put in the background and maybe work on making it look a little nicer.

U are not alone fellow GIMP user!!!
maybe you could add a fading border around her?
Or what I think I'd do is convert all the image except her hair into greyscale, would look fairly dramatic!
If u have any questions about the GIMP just ask :)

Thanks for the reply : )

I like the gray scale idea. Would i go about doing that by creating a duplicate image which i can convert to gray scale and then copy the hair from the color image and paste it over her hair on the gray scale or is there a way to gray scale just part of an image?

I'm not sure what you mean by a fading border though; i'll Google it.

Edit: You mean like this:

Youre right on for the greyscale thing.
What i meant for the fading thing was to have a colour fading out from round her head.
On the layer with just her body: layer>transparencey>alpha to selection
then fill this selection on a new layer and gaussian blur it.
Oh and you might want to grow the selection a bit before filling it

EDIT: this is roughly what i mean

TIP: use a soft edged eraser to cut out the edges

I would try to give you tips but i gave up on GIMP after i realized if i had Photoshop i might as well use it.

As for backgrounds you can do loads of things, simple gradients, to patterns and complex things, shove an image behind etc.

I gave an attempt at the shadow thing like you showed and this is how it turned out.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k314/luciusad2004/l1nd5/LindsayShadowed.jpg

I duplicated the layer, selected her and filled her in black. Then i used Gaussian blur on the layer that i filled black.

Personally, I think she is to bright for the background but I'm moderately pleased with it. i also didn't take time to clean up the rough spots like i did last time.

good gradient. I don't know if GIMP has this feature but sometimes I find that the edges can be cleared up using an "outer glow". Just set the color to match the bordering color and it will smooth it out most of the time.

Thanks. : )

I'll see what i can find in gimp as far as that "outer glow" feature. In one of the earlier images up in the my post i used the smudge tool to try and clean the images up. It worked ok but it wasn't the best.
