View Full Version : Changed drive letter, now it hangs after XP loads

One of my computers I needed to restore; its drive letter changed to F. I used Microsoft's online guides to edit the registry and change the drive letter back to C. Did everything it said, restarted, and it hung after Xp loaded. I shut it off, restarted it, and now I have a BSoD saying "INMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME."

Any ideas?

Have you tried booting only with that drive? no other one?
Is it a dual boot system?

Look at boot.ini. There's probably a change you need to make in there.

well right now I'm trying the "chkdsc /r" function through the repair console.

Bluescreen is gone, but it still freezes after XP boots up. I'm gonna try safe mode now.

damn; still hangs even in safe mode. Time to slave it and check the boot.ini file.

Best way to change drive letters would be through "Computer management" in admin tools.
(start>control panel>performance and maintenance>admin tools>computer management>storage>disk management> then right click on the drive and select change drive letter and paths.)

If possible, change it back the way you changed it and see how it acts.

I had something similar once; turned out I had a DVCAM plugued in firewire, the system saw it as a drive.

Have you tried in VGA mode? may be a driver issue.

It sounds like your boot.ini is not pointing to the right boot drive. That would be the next place I would look. You may also have corrupted MBR files.

"chkdsk /mbr" can sometimes help..

Thanks for the help guys. I actually just ended up reinstalling XP and moved the files back over.
