hello all i was wondering i have a DVR directv version .
I was wondering if anybody has ever tried getting a External Hard Drive snd connecting it to dvr.
So i can store movies and shows because the DVR itself only has a 100gig hd ,that fills up pretty quick i have googled it only thing i found was for dish version. Which is diffrent and somebody else asking the same thing, or any other ideas to store my stuff would be cool thanks in advance .

not sure if you can rip it apart but if you can you should be able to just change the drive i think.

I've read some books on replacing the drive on Tivo versions of DVRs but nothing specific on the Direct Tv ones. I found those in the library, some of it though involved getting certain firmware updates from the Tivo sight and installing the drive into your PC first to set the drive up for the Tivo hardware.

Might be much more feasible to get a TV card for your computer and use it as a DVR.
In theory anyways.
RCA/SVGA out to computer.

Honestly, I know very little about tuner cards, but my wife's uncle has a couple installed in his two HTPCs that he's built. If I can catch up to him sometime later today, I'll ask him.

The only problem is with the satilite system. You're going to need another tuner next to your computer that takes the signal in. Then you can go into the tuner card with it. Last time I knew Direct Tv charged $5 extra a month for the extra boxes and you had to either 1 have the receiver outside upgraded with a dual receiver or get a multiplexer with runs about $150 last time I knew. But they could of changed the systems around some since I worked on them. I haven't been able to mess around to much with the tuner card I put in my wifes computer to much since I got it for her for Christmas but I'll do some tonight after work and see what the quality is even on a cheap card.

I have the DirecTV dvr. Here's what I know. You can use the output to tv into a tuner box in your computer to watch tv on your computer then you will need some sort of program to record onto your computer or a dvd. The usb port on the front doesnt do anything. There is rumor that someday it will. But I think it needs a firmware update or something to that effect before it becomes active. Some people I have talked to say its not wired at all. So thats what you are working with. Before you mod the box make sure directv SOLD you the box. Or you will pay fees out the ass for screwing with the box when it comes time for the 'free' upgrade.
