unplug the 20 or 24 pin connector and short the green wire to one of the black wires. if your drives, fans, etc power up then it's your mobo, if not its the psu.

it will be the biggest set of wires, like this

http://www.motherboards.org/images/articles/guides/20-into-24-pin.jpgFig. 1a 20 pin connector in a 24pin slot.

look for the only green wire in the bunch of wires and get a paper clip or wire and connect/short it to a black wire. this will make the power supply think that you have hit the power button on your motherboard. it should then power up, if it doesn't then its your psu that has gone bad not the motherboard.

http://www.marnscda.com/Guide/Short24pin.jpgFig. 2This is for a 24pin connector, the two red spots are the green and a black wire.

if you can't tell if its powered up press the cd/dvd drive button and the tray should pop out.

if you have another psu around, which i have a feeling you don't as your not a computer person, you should be able to take it to a pc shop and ask for them to plug in a working psu and as them to jump your psu and see if it works or not.

i would be inclined to say yes, but if the led gets power from right from the ac cord it might not, so jumping will usually tell if its dead or not.

what styling of computing do you do? (gaming, web browsing, email?) and what kind of budget are we talking? do you want to go SLI or TriSli or Crossfire or just a single card?

do you have a camera? if you do unplug the connector and take a picture of both sides and i will tell you which wires you jump.

i do both gaming and surfing but i want a computer that is fast and quick...i have a camera phone but wont be able to connect it as am using my ps3 to go on the internet. spend about £100

tried the paper clip thing with green and black wire but no difference mate.will have to take to a pc shop and sort it out.

what do you mean no difference?

when you short the wire the power supply should turn on and anything attached to it should get power IF the psu works. since you have the 24 removed the computer won't boot up. i think just take it to a pc shop and see what they say, be careful they don't rip you off though, it shouldn't cost to much to see whats wrong with it.

another idea might be to head to a friends house and see of you can wire there psu to your motherboard and see what happens.

thats good to hear, since most psu's are cheaper than mobo's. whats the brand of the dead psu?
